@Jtalbert @tivodesign yes, what's the status on the second core? The UI is far too slow in a world of iPads.

@shanselman @Jtalbert The second core is coming, but I can't comment on timing. Making it faster is a focus for us.

They've been saying that for ages, I've seen reports which suggest that Linux (or at least, the version on TiVo) is not stable with the 2nd core running.

That's not true, and even if they were using some funky kernel they could easily swap it out. It's the C+ code that sits behind the flash UI that is the problem and arrantly needs a re-write. My guess is that they will be updating the SD bits at the same time so not a small job.

Finally succumbed to getting TiVo, it's being installed tomorrow to replace my main V+ box.

Ben, does that mean from the EPG you can now select iPlayer programs?

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

From the backwards EPG yes, the programmes will also appear as the rest of the catch up content does so will be in 'Search and Browse'

I suspect it will only start working from today though, any existing content probably won't link

That is great news Ben many thanks for confirming.

That is one less thing my Mrs will be able to moan about tomorrow night! I'm just trying to prepare for all the things TiVo won't do that V+ currently does that I'll be moaned at by the Mrs tomorrow night about!!

That's great news as the mess of catch-up TV on TiVo was one of my main gripes. When VM get the rest of the bugs shaken out it really will be a 'next generation' STB worthy of the name.

With the current 14.1c software, the HD interface is very sluggish as the reviews indicate. The second core of the Premiere's dual-core processor is currently disabled under Linux for stability reasons, as confirmed by a serial boot log. TiVo is working to address that. TiVo's Bob Poniatowski had this to say on March 31:

Yes, the second core is not currently enabled. The software can take advantage of it, but it's not ready to release yet. Still, due to the architecture of that chip you don't get double the performance by enabling the second core, there are too many shared resources on the chip between the two cores. You do see a boost however.

Cheers,
Pony
TiVo, Inc

They've been working on that since March last year. :erm:

I think they're talking about the stability of their software on-top of Linux not Linux it's self. The dual core support will have been disabled at the OS level.

I wouldn't look into any information about other TiVo hardware in comparison to ours. We have a Cisco STB with TiVo software after all.

I think technically there incredible similar, i'm not positive that Cisco don't build the premier, it's not TiVo.

Great news about the BBC being avaliable through normal catch up TV. My iPlayer app rarely works anyway.
