Going to make up some steak-in-ale pies this afternoon: 900g lean stewing steak, John Smith's bitter, onions, mushrooms, garlic, stock, herbs, etc. Slow cooked for 2-3 hours then into individual #2 ceramic pie dishes and topped with puff pastry. Yum! Should be enough filling to make 4 so two to freeze for later. I keep the pastry separate and only put it on just before cooking.

You should try it with a darker ale, it'll impart more flavor to the gravy

Beef in Guiness is one of the classics, the recipe I use as a base comes from a pub chef who recommended JS bitter and that's what I had a tinny of in the cupboard. I like to add some extras like soy sauce, Lea and Perrins and a glug of mushroom ketchup

Been cooking gently now for an hour and a half. OH keeps coming in and wanting a taste. No chance, that's cooks privelege. :)

I'll be serving it pub style with lots of chips, battered onion rings and peas.

Yum.............even though I have had my dinner it is still making my mouth water! :D

We had an early Burns Supper last night, as we had some friends visiting from Pennsylvania.

Cock-a-leekie soup, followed by a choice of Bridies or Haggis (or both), with Tatties and Neeps, and Cranachan for dessert (with the Selkirk Grace and Address to a Haggis at the appropriate times).

Just checking the empties this morning, and we went through six bottles of champagne, five bottles of red, a bottle of 18 year old single malt, and six bottles of Deuachars IPA - not bad for eight of us (and we still got up for church this morning.......).

Rabbie would have approved.:D

Not sure what to do this year. The kids won't eat Haggis and she who must be obeyed is adhering to her diet. I'm not aware of any Scottish cuisine healthy diet options.

I may just get a haggis supper for myself from the chippy and wash it doon wae irn bru since I'm off the drink for a month. :D

I'm surprised the vicar got up in the morning for church too. you should have seen what he had to drink the night before.

my happy thought is thinking of getting a new car.

He didn't - he's been quite poorly for a couple of weeks, so the locum vicar took the service again.
