to test this drop your firewall temporerily (if your using one) and run shieldsup (https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2) any ports that show as stelthed are being blocked by ntl

sure enough with firewalls turned off around 4 ports that are unreachable and it dont know why 18 quid for a connection that aint worth it

Which ones? Some are blocked as responses to virus attacks, one in particular is a problem with outlook webmail or something.

NTL has in the past re-jigged its Terms and Conditions to try and force business users from the Home service to the business range.

The ports blocked are:

137 (UDP), 138 (UDP), 139 (TCP), 445 (UDP & TCP), 593 (TCP), these ports are used by Windows File and Print sharing. It will not affect file/print sharing on a local LAN, it will only stop it working across the Internet. Other side effects of closing these ports is that MS Exchange in conjunction with Outlook will not work, and DCOM applications are now broken.
Ports 1433 (TCP), 1434 (UDP), these ports are used by SQL server. Also it is possible that users may see the odd 'page not found' message, from their web browser.
27374 (TCP) no specific application is blocked, but there may be the odd random quirk or small application someone is using that uses the port.

what ports are unreachable?, and have you tried downloading from a newsgroup to see if you obtain full download rate as P2P file sharing isn't the best gauge of proper download speeds.

If NTL are throttling downgraded users also then thats bang out of order, but i would like to see your results 1st

The only one's who ever complain about BB caps or the majority of people who complain about them are the ones who are tight as anything so they choose to use and share stolen software!

I would love FAST to turn up at everyones door who complained about any BB caps and examine their machines you would be supprised at how many people would end up in court!

Ohhhhhhhh and wait for them all to start saying Linux iso's as their excuse!

It seems that people want everything for nothing theese days, one poster replied I don't want AOL because I do not want to use AOL's software! Wake up you muppet you don't need to use aol's software!

I was with AOL for a year and I never installed or used their software!

and second he did not want to be at 1MB speeds???????

Some people are just never happy!

If NTL gave half these people free 10MB BB uncapped they would still complain about it!

And before anyone askes I don't work for NTL, I am nothing more than a customer like you!

Total news to me. As far as i am aware NTL do not traffic shape or block p2p ports.

the symptoms you describe sound like a 'maxed out' upload stream, what happens if you throttle it back?

Its possible to go over 30gb regularly while downloading legal material. Its also possible to download illegal material and stay under the 30gb cap. NTL arent concerned with illegal software etc. If they were they wouldnt host it on their news servers.
