BenMcr - as a 10mb L customer can I still get a 20mb upgrade instead of getting 30mb and having to pay the £30 activation fee for a superhub

As far as I'm aware yes, although I would expect you would be pushed towards the latter

Will they still be paying more than the 50meg customers, though or will they be paying the same (possibly as a thank you for being an early adopter?)?

I only ask because there was talk of the 100meg dropping to the same price as the 50meg when the 50meg went to 100meg, but if 100 is going to 120 and getting a price decrease as well, then I'm just wondering what the costs will be. 100 to 120 isn't a big leap really.

And here's me just signed up for 50Mb (though not installing until March)

Is it just download or are we getting any upload speed change as well (I already live in a increased upload area)

You will just be upgraded to 20mb with your existing modem.

The uploads will also be increased to keep the same 10:1 ratio - although I believe depending on the network work required the two may not change at the same time

Will my upload speed increase, as well?

Yes! It’s not just your downloads that’ll become much faster. Your upload speeds will be automatically increased as we upgrade our network, so you get the best of both worlds.

Depending on the progress of the network upgrade there maybe a delay after your download speed is increased before your upload speed boost occurs

Broadband Size : 100 (up to 100Mb)

Up to 120Mb – Note these increases will start from summer 2012
Does this mean other srvices will be doubled first, and the top service will be done after the others?

Or is this comment for all upgrades?

At present the is no longer a 20Mb tier and the only option is to upgrade to 30Mb, the new 20Mb tier will not come into effect until your area has been upgraded which will be sometime over the next 18 months.

A LOT of their customers won't even realise their speed has been upgraded and many won't be bothered to phone up to change. Also bt infinity is taking off so virgin need to counter that threat as you can get their 40mb which is around 37mb on average for £18 with 40gb cap, £25 without cap. that will be 80mb later this year. Virgin charge £18.50 for 30mb.

Virgin HAD to significantly increase their speeds otherwise users would switch to BT as 80mb with no cap and no speed drop to 5mb after a few gig for £25 is truly amazing.

Once netflix and lovefilm streaming really take off i'll bet we'll see alot of virgin customers complaining about the speed drop to 5mb. netflix does 720p and has one with a rather high bitrate, they recommend you have a 4mb connection, so if you share your internet you may experience problems with netflix hd and i'm sure lovefilm will add hd support this year.

I'll be dropping from XL 20Mb to L 20mb once i've been upgraded to 60mb to reduce my bills but i'll still be throttled to 5mb after watching netflix hd i'm sure which really sucks. Virgin need to increase the limit on the new 20mb package to stop that from happening imo. The other packages have a decent limit until the speed drop is triggered.

Wonder if virgin will be adding 802.11ac to their modem/routers later this year, it would help alot for wireless users trying to get maximum speed.

2/3 of VM areas have no infinity.

Most people dont constantly switch to whatever is the cheapest at any given moment either, there is a degree of loyalty and there is the slight legal requirement of a min contract term.

Finally we have people who will stick with VM for tv as well.

I have always had the view the customers that constantly switch are ones not worth having.

^ I think infinity is referring to BT's rollout schedule rather than speed.

Atm, we are on XL 20mb with no superhub, I was never offered a superhub and upgrade to 30mb. Either way, I think I'll hang on and wait for the 60mb upgrade. I hope the superhub is free like they say!

same position as you, but once i've got my new modem/router i'll drop down to L 20mb tier to save £.

Hope virgin release their upgrade schedule for the double speed, they released their 100mb updated upgrade schedule on 7th jan, everywhere will have 100mb by end of May.

What happens about money? will all the prices drop in 1 week or after 19 months once everyone has upgraded or will they change area by area after the upgrade is done in their area?

Wonder if there will be any change in the XL price for standalone broadband or as a package?
