He has good reason to be pessimistic, for not a month goes by without his provider of choice BT YouView losing another on-demand service. He needs our understanding during these dark hours. ;)

Always puzzled me why there was just a holding channel for these and the holding channel was not showing anything.

Wish they had picked Chilled instead. Gave up watching the blocky crashy stream through the red button.

Big question to ask is this. Actually how many channels CAN VM have on the system. I have not counted how many there is now.

I was under the impression that when VM bought the Isle of Wight channels, theses would automatically go onto the main system.

We would have all the True Channels etc etc. Or is VM, yet gain messing about with the channels

Spiderplant will know about capacity i think but i know it isn't as restricted as it used to be.
Just because some channels are on say for example vm in isle of white it doesn't mean mainlan uk get them too it's all down to rights etc.

Not quite. WightFibre, as it is now called is still going strong. They provide Broadband to the IOW, but have until recently had no TV services.

http://www.wightfibre.com/

When they were Wight Cable, they bought franchises in Scotland & North Lancashire (Wight Cable North). This eventually became Smallworld Cable, which Virgin took over a couple of years ago.

No, it's still independent, owned by one of the founders of Easynet, Keith Young.

On the company's website it also says "Today, WightFibre is the last independent cable company in the UK continuing to deliver service with a local touch which is the envy of the large national telecom companies. All our employees live on the island and our customer service centre is based in Cowes providing support 24 x 7 every day of the year."
http://www.wightfibre.com/about/

You were probably thinking of Smallworld which VM bought in 2014.

When VM took over Smallworld, Smallworld customers got the same set of channels as all other VM customers. They lost a few channels, and gained a lot.

I know that linear channels are normally added in the early hours of the morning, not sure about apps.

In the same way that Clubland TV is now fully utilising their EPG slot, I wonder why Netflix doesn't have a preview channel on channel 204 to entice customers or even show a freebie to drum up interest?

Maybe OTT broadcasters don't need a traditional broadcasting licence, so they can't??

Or perhaps VM would charge them for the extra bandwidth??

I remember when these channels were added, people complained to them that they were via an app.

On their Facebook page, the channel owner said that this was the only way that VM would allow them to be on the platform.

I never really swallowed this as I'm sure if they had paid enough money, they could have been added as linear channels.

Perhaps it was a case of them telling VM how much they could afford or be prepared to pay and VM said that an app based solution was the only option- allowing them to 'blame' VM.

I wonder if the new guy who says that he is to improve the TV side of VM had anything to do with this??

So they didn't discover some technical issue until the day of launch and now all of a sudden it could be delayed for several months, missing the crucial build up to Christmas and the massively hyped launch of The Grand Tour too

Whose to say that it's a technical snag?

It might be a contractual problem or something.

Does seem daft for them not to pull out all the stops to get it on before Christmas though.

Someone joining via the addition to VM is probably more likely to buy their Christmas things from Amazon because of the free postage.

No info on snag we are trying to get information, we think it could be down to old tivo speed issues so Amazon want to wait until new tivo is rolling out properly.

Does seem daft for them not to pull out all the stops to get it on before Christmas though.

Someone joining via the addition to VM is probably more likely to buy their Christmas things from Amazon because of the free postage.

Anything other than a technical issue, at such a late stage (the day of launch) would be pretty ridiculous given discussions started over 2 and a half years ago!

Amazon have a new fire stick due in the next few weeks, and I am sure they must have a HDR box up their sleeves as well, I would have been very surprised if Amazon Prime had launched on a big delivery system like VM this side of Christmas, it doesn't make commercial sense.

Good points and before we criticise VM too much, we only have one unnamed source claiming it was going to launch yesterday.
Let's see if VM announced anything on the 30th or maybe an astute journalist will ask the question then.

I think the pay tv providers are changing there stance now on streaming services , Netflix has been added to Comcasts X1 platform within the last week or so which is a pretty big deal.

Can't see Sky having Netflix or Amazon though.

That will depend on whether there is an appetite from the customer to see this happen.

And also it will depend on Sky's usual intransigence in making deals with many of its rivals as has been seen over the last 10 years and right up to this day.

The Amazon app has been subject to testing on a VM Tivo platform for some months now. It could be that was testing on the V6 but it would be incredibly naive if they left testing on the legacy TivO platform so late in the day.

There was certainly no testing of an Amazon App included in the recent update's testing (just bug reports listed in the Alpha test reports) so perhaps there's been a specific testing program just for this one app or perhaps of course someone decided to wing it and it backfired.

The latter would not surprise me at all.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin Media TV (2016) Vol 2

Amazon Prime wasn't added to the US Premier until March 2015, and that needed an Tivo update to enable it. We didn't get the equivalent update for a long time after that. I can't remember whether it was this last one or the one before. The early part of this year seems to ring a bell. So it was Tivo's software that was the limiting factor for much of the delay time, both here and the USA.

Previous to the update, US Premier's could download purchased Amazon video to Tivo's hard drive. They then lost the ability to do that when Prime was added.

Well, that is not surprising, really. Virgin play these contractual matters close to their chests and don't like premature leaks you get on these forums, which must be the bane of their lives. So by discrediting those sources by releasing false information to them is in VM's interests.

All businesses like to manage their news stories, releasing them at a pre-arranged time. They provide the media with information slightly ahead of time with an embargo set for the publication of that information. The media co-operate with these embargoes because they know that they will not be given this information ahead of time if they are breached, putting them at a disadvantage with their competitors.

These forums, however, are a complete free for all and play havoc with the management of business information.

Everyone should treat the stories they read on forums with a large pinch of salt unless they are backed up by company or reputable media sources.

There was a testing group of customers to test the most recent big software update with the Series Link+ etc.
In that there was some testing of apps and weirdly Amazon Prime was in the choice of apps for a while but then when it was mentioned on a closed forum the next update removed it so as far back as this summer the Amazon Prime app was kind of on the original TiVo but the testers of the software were not asked to test the app and in fact it got removed.
It was like it was on there by accident.

As mentioned you would have thought the week of A Grand Tour would have been prime time to launch it but with how slow Netflix, BBC and just in general the TiVo has gone you can't blame Amazon if they have said we don't want to be associated with that.

Regarding the Amazon app - Sylviewho on Niallis Blog Page "Virgin Media HD, TiVo & Netflix" said this...

I checked my Tivo box on Wednesday 9th November. Amazon app there alongside all other apps - Netflix etc. Logged into my Amazon Prime account and starting browsing all films, videos etc. Great. Today 11 November no sign of the app! Phoned Virgin, no one there had even heard there was to be an app. Unbelievable!

That says to me that one there was a significant technical problem and two and that is Virgin's customer service will deny it until it is is rolled out Nationwide John but it will be interesting to hear what others think?

It depends on what the launch actually is.

When CBS Action launched, they couldn't care less, but BT Sport was a whole different matter.

Talking of BT Sport, could we also see Boxnation included in XL in a similar fashion?

Well if Boxnation is added to the XL pack and that is a big if then there would certainly be quite a few who would go for that as it would add good added value to the pack.

The alpha test known issues referenced the Amazon Prime app but the group testing the latest software on the current platform weren't asked to test it....even though it was there in the apps. The alpha test known issues also referenced 4k issues so I'm assuming that was perhaps related to V6 testing.

If you were also involved in the latest testing exercise you'll probably agree that it wasn't exactly smooth running and an app accidentally making it out to the wrong platform isn't a surprise.

It won't be added to XL until January at the earliest. Even if it's not added 20 of these big Frank Warren fight nights will be shown on both Boxnation and BT Sports 1. So in effect XL customers are going to get access to the biggest domestic cards on Boxnation under this deal.
