Premier League games can be shown on foreign decoders

The decision could trigger a major shake-up for the Premier League and its current exclusive agreements with Sky Sports and ESPN, and pave the way to cheaper viewing of foreign broadcasts for fans of top-flight English games.

It was just another petty thing that $ky made Virgin do. I believe it had something to do with the Virgin logo and $ky channels being on screen at the same time, or something like that. Stupid, when you see that the V+ box shows all $ky channels on its video window.

Does Network capacity upgrades mean more channels. Could this have something do with virgin media target of 80 HD channels in just over 2 years. I never got a postcard.

They are spending thousands and thousands of pounds upgrading the tv system so we will get a lot more HD channels.

It's even more stupid than that when you consider hitting the INFO button on a TiVo while $$$ky is in fullscreen produces a VM logo on the left which is almost as big as the one on the EPG. :D

Probably because thats the way it is on TiVo - so it's a straight swap out for the TiVo logo in places

whilst it is nice to see new channels i am disappointed we have not aleast seen universal hd come over. Its clear that we aint gonna see sky atlantic for the forseable future and i think that would have least pleased some people,Out of the uktv hd channels launching personally the only one worth a look is alibi and we aint seeing that till next year. Its clear we only got these due to the sale and it was part of the deal to sell(so in other words got on the cheap)that is concerning because after all these months of promises of new channels and the talks that vm have supposed to been having with channel providers have amounted to nothing. Is anyone else not concerned by this?

P.S this aint a moan more of a concern !!!!!!!!!

Ugh, that picture is a typography nightmare. Between the engadget watermark, the sports program text and the TiVo info which uses a similar font it's a complete headache.

Probably because the VM TiVo has an extra tuner so it has to work slightly differently. Also part of it will have been to make it fit with the miniguide (which TiVo doesn't have)

Hiya,

Just use the info button which will then allow you to swap between any of the 3 tuners at will, whilst still holding the buffers on the non being watched ones.

Thanks for the new HD channels and one price for all boxes.

That was when virgin media only had 7 HD channels. We now have 36 HD channels. Channel 4 has already said they want to launch More4 HD this year so I think More4 HD will launch on Monday December 12th 2011 because Channel 4 HD launched on Monday 10 December 2007 and E4 HD launched on Monday 14 December 2009.

I don't think that LW change would affect VM. How I read it from the Guardian is that the BBC would shift the programming to DAB. It's the medium that would stop, not the content

The thread seems to have gone very off topic lately.

Please remember it is for discussion of new channels or services coming to VM not just general TV or TV show news.

So that could ultimately mean HD simulcasts of BBC Channels that don't already have them ?

I Think BBC Should Axe Wimbledon and The Eurovision Song Contest to Make Way For BBC THREE HD, BBC FOUR HD, CBBC HD & CBEEBIES HD if It Happens. I Think The Eurovision Song Contest Should Move To ITV 1 Instead and Wimbledon Should Move To Eurosport or ESPN.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

I have been checking the EPG for the new HD channels Eden, Watch, and Dave and there doesn't seem to be an indication of whether the programme is true HD or upscaled HD. What is the point of having HD channels, if you don't know it is in HD and if it isn't you might as well stick to the SD version.

Just had a look on the TIVO EPG, the first HD flagged programme on Watch is Primeval on Wednesday at 14.00. On Dave it's Top Gear Polar Special, Monday at 17.00. Eden HD and Food HD have plenty pf programmes in native HD.

nomadking 06-10-2011 16:47

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2011) Vol. III.

On V+ EPG they are not labelled as either HD(ie native) or upscaled HD. The Radio Times website and print version also doesn't give the info.

Since Tuesday night the following things has happen in my area:

-Tuesday night at 1.10am Dave HD and Watch HD was added - Total Channels was 281.
-But as of 3.53pm today Channel 890 has been remove - Total Channels is 277.

So if Virgin Media keep out removing two channels from Total Channels every night we will be down to just one channel by mid-April 2012. :)

2.1.7 Reductions in transmission spend
The cost of transmitting the BBC’s services is predicted to rise significantly as platforms proliferate, which in turn reduces the amount we can spend on content. The BBC must aim to contain these costs wherever possible while continuing the journey to a fully digital future. This will involve some difficult choices, particularly as we ramp down outdated or transitional transmission technologies. We therefore propose:
• A phased reduction of broadcast Red Button services, reducing the number of interactive streams to one across all platforms and exploring
the longer-term transition to IPTV technologies
• Closing the BBC HD channel and replacing it with a single version of BBC Two in high definition

We will continue to invest in high-definition broadcasting, including through the replacement of BBC HD with a single version of BBC Two HD. The variants of BBC One in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland would be broadcast in HD from 2012.

Even if a programme is SD you're still better off watching it on the HD channel due to the better upscaling by the broadcaster and the higher bitrate.

Is there any chance of virgin customers being able to turn off sd channels if we have the hd variant. Things have gone quiet on the sky anytime + side of things. Also if we could delete recordings via phone or iPad it would really help

Call me negative but there is zero chance of this launching on Virgin Media. There is something inherently wrong with the VM business model that seem to mean no new channels will launch on VM, without removing another channel that broadcaster already own, or the broadcaster buys something off VM who stipulate they must add channels in the contract. Sad but true.

They are TV Guides though, the VM one is a TV Editors Choice in general. Would be better excluding the non VM channel films though as it causes confusion with some customers.
