All in all very happy with Tivo - very much faster to scroll through listings than the old V+

Not got the thumbs up and down sorted as yet so some of the suggestions are a bit wayward but I guess that that is just a matter of time.

Very happy chappy here

Yes tivo is in another world compared to the V plus.

Just received a response from the makers of the excellent TV Guide app for iPhone & iPad about adding TiVo remote record.

Great news for those waiting for the official TiVo app!

A reboot has sorted the PIN code behavior on BBC one HD. Now seems to operate in a much more sensible way.

Seriously?!

Reminders will need to be coded from scratch and will probably be months away. If there is a new software update in the next few weeks it would most likely be for stability issues and just be a minor update.

l would have thought it would be quite easy to add reminders quickly and really this should have been there from the start.

Well Tivo installed it took one hour thirty which included repositioning of the V+ HD box (no multi room before). So far so good, PQ better than before only thing not working yet is the catch up from the EPG, but having said that the vm technician did say it will take at least 28hrs to complete all is downloading.

Not from the start no, as has been said we are using TiVo which was an existing product that we are gradually moulding and changing however if a new feature needs added, ie reminders or red button stuff. Then TiVo themselves in the USA need to build the code and have it all tested to make sure it all works as expected and then also to ensure that it interacts with the existing features.

It's not simple at all.

This will be brilliant for them in the USA and the other parts of the world that they have signed up with. They will be at the fore-front of the TV market:erm:

That's different thing altogether. We have a contract with them and if we ask them to build something in they should be able to do it.

Some people are totally unrealistic with their expectations. Software can and does take. Long time to build and test. Take red button on sports, how long since the original announcement? It will have been worked on probably before that date and constantly tested and if it doesn't play well they may need to start again or change large parts of the code to get it working properly.

Yeah, I appreciate that the brand new things take time to be coded, tested etc.

But when they originally moved from the SD menus to HD why only change the basics rather than the whole UI? The US TiVo subscribers have been asking for all the menus in HD for a long time now but maybe as you say if VM request it then they'll pull their finger out! :)

It's embarrasing when I'm showing all my Sky+HD owning friends the new, revoulutionary, next generation set top box powered by TiVO and the UI reverts to one of those Fisher Price 2000 menu screens. :(

I read somewhere that the old SD screens are coded in C (or it may have been C++) which it's not simple as they'd have to be re-coded from scratch in Flash to use the HD interface.

They've had plenty of time to do this since the TiVo Premiere was released.

Beyond looking better, it would help fit more info onto the screen, especially on the 'planned recordings for your wishlist' page, the name of the channel goes off the right of the screen, meaning you have to select that planned recording to see what channel its recording off.

Argreed. It does look very amaturish for a flagship device released in 2011. :erm:

Why will they?

They can reuse most of the code from scheduled recordings, they already prompt you to change channel if the tuner is needed for a recording, it's really not going to be that much work to repurpose the code to do reminders instead.

"From scratch" makes it sound like it's going to be some huge task when I'd say a good 90% of the code is already there. The box is already capable of having events set, firing off events at certain times and switching channels which is the hard part.

Tivo is only a little company, they will have resource issues and have to support multiple cable companies around the world now. Updating and testing software is a long and laborious process, some on here seem to think that you write a few lines of code and then your done.

Have you ever written code for a stb? I know someone in VM that works on stb software and it's really not as simple as you seem to think.

I've had TiVo for about 10 days and loving it so much I upgraded to VIP 50 to get Sports and Movies in HD. Contract came through yesterday and I'm paying £96.55 for a promotional period and £103.55 after that.

Add on the Sky Sports Red Button launching later today apparently and I'm a happy bunny.

I also got a call from VM last night asking for my initial feedback. Told them about the minor niggles about reminders and the person I spoke to, John Paul, said that was actively being looked into as well as the development of a raft of new apps.

BenMcr 28-04-2011 13:07

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

Two things

1) You should only be paying £100.55 for VIP 50 with TiVo after any promotional period

2) Red Button won't be on TiVo quite yet

Re: General TiVo Discussion Part 2

My TiVo was installed yesterday. I was aware of all the issues on these forums so was expecting the worst. I'd read about the remote line of sight issues, PQ issues, EPG and On Demand, lack of reminders etc etc.
However, so far I'm delighted. The engineer was doing his first TiVo install which filled me with dread. It turns out I knew a lot more about it than he did so my 'training' session was pretty brief. Thanks to all the forum posters for that knowledge!
One important point, before I allowed him to connect anything I insisted on a signal test. Turns out my signal was too high, which might explain the years of issues I've had with my Samsung SD box, freezes, missing menu data etc.
After he'd adjusted the signal we then booted into diagnostics on the TiVo before it performed it's first 'live' connection. After a few calls to support (I could hear them talking the engineer through the menus as he didn't know them) and some adjustments, the first full connect with data download took about 20-30 minutes. I was expecting days of delays to fully build the EPG menus but everything appears to be there now.
Yes there still remain the small issues that people are seeing but I'd go as far as to say none of them are major showstoppers and the product does feel ready for general release to the main body of VM customers.
So far well pleased.

Yes I was on the old silver Samsung SD box and got a call last week from CS about the free move to another room. I was tempted but only if they could supply a V or V+ box as that is what other customers are being allowed to keep for free. In the end I declined the offer and just went with the swap for TiVo. The extra cabling around the house to get to upstairs was a no starter for the missus.
However, I do agree that if its a free offer it should allow you to have for free what others get, so in effect an upgraded box for you.

I fully agree with Stephen! The TiVo is what it is. All pros and cons were well publicised on this forum. There is no point in having it installed and then moaning about features that VM never claimed it had! By all means let's have some constructive debates about the TiVo but try to refrain from the aggressive tones that have been emerging of late.

Ha! would not surprise me!

Anybody know a phone number for the TiVo team, or is it only via India?

Just spoke to my Dad who informs me that they had a phone call for me at their house last week regarding my TiVo???? I've not lived there for 6 years and never had Virgin/Ntl installed there?? They put the phone down before he could pass on my number. Why or how they got that number for me is beyond me. I even have a Virgin phone, so surely it wouldn't be hard to get the right phone number!

Fully agree, Fixerman.
Going with TiVo now is absolutely no different from upgrading your PC to Windows Vista or Windows 7 when they were first released. They were paid products that were full of bugs and issues. Early adopters know this and their expectations are limited. Of course in an ideal world it wouldn't be that way.
In 3 to 6 months time I'd guess nearly all the issues we're all finding with TiVo will be gone. The situation we're all in with TiVo now can only improve. Where it is as a product now is still in my opinion an excellent product that for most customers performs nearly everything they want.
Personally, I'm really happy to be on-board with TiVo now and can also accept that it's not perfect yet.

I had the V+ box, had TiVo installed yesterday but still haven't been offered multiroom, so not everybody has had the offer- unless it's just me!

Had my TiVo installed about 1/2 hour ago. Really good engineer, had installed 3 boxes today. He knew what he was doing and was confident with the box and showing me the functions! Also said to me that I was having my box relocated. This was news to me!! On his PDA it was a straight swap, after contacting VM was told V+ was being relocated for no charge!! Bonus.

Also told me that if box wasnt being relocated it would come up with error on PDA half way through TiVo install. V+ box works perfect.

The engineer was great, credit to VM.

There is a thread in the VM community forum about a problem in Leicester. There is no excuse for not letting you know though. Ask to be compensated.

I got a call from Virgin yesterday offering me the free multiroom (my TiVo install is next Wednesday).

Now, I have read that some customers have been contacted by Virgin that their broadband is going to be upgraded from 10Mb to 20Mb for free because of TiVo. Is this true? And if it is then would Virgin call me about it or will I have to contact them?

Yeah prob with the headend in Leicester. After some update or something it wasnt set to allow Tivo services. Just had a call from the engineer I think and assured me that I will have in installed first thing tomorrow morning. So just 24 hrs late. Not the engineers fault but CS were terrible was told earlier on that the whole tivo service in UK had gone down!!!! Comes as no surprise that it wasnt a UK call centre that said that:dozey:

anyway roll on tomorrow morning I hope:confused:

BBC, ITV, Channel4 and Channel 5 only release up to 10 days worth of guide, most other channels should have 14 days.

Could it be that the tivo has still not downloaded everything since installation.

Me too. Goes as far as 6am on Sat 7th May. But my TiVo was only installed yesterday morning so I expected the box to take a while to update. But you have had yours for a few weeks, haven't you?

Don't know. My last connect to VM by Tivo was 2AM today. Maybe they don't have a full 2 week guide available?

I am due to have TiVo installed tomorrow (wed)

Last night (mon) while watching a recording my SA V+ left the recording and went to live tv, since then that's all it will do.
It will not show the programme guide or recordings or any V+ features (it will show the mini guide) it will not go into standby via remote or box. After speaking to three different 'faults' people last night and more this morning I am being told that my V+ service has been switched off so that it can be put onto the TiVo (remember I have not got it yet) CS say that it would be possible to reactivate my V+ but this would wipe recordings and more importantly stop my TiVo installation taking place tomorrow.
This seems crazy to me for two main reasons.
1. If only the V+ services have been deactivated why won't the box show the tv guide or go into standby?
2. I was 'phoned last week and told I could keep the V+ for another room free of charge. (the goodwill call)
Also why turn off one service before receiving the upgrade to another?
Comments welcome, hopefully some from DF and MB too.

Edit. @ Digital Fanatic, TiVo installed yesterday and is fine but the installer didn't do anything about the V+ because it wasn't on his pda (he showed me)
any thoughts? thanks.

Are you lot for real?

If I have to do a full guided set up on my 10 year old S1 Tivo then the initial PHONE call takes about 30 minutes then about 4 hours or so to fully populate a 21 day epg.

Your fancy new box has a dedicated 10meg modem no? So it can download let's call it 1MB of data per second, or 60 meg a minute or 3.6 gig per hour or 86 GIG a day.

If it really takes a whole week to fully populate everything what is it doing with the 604 GIGABYTES of data?

Sounds like a real major step, er, backwards.

Yes it may take that, but do not forget that we get:
MOVIES ON DEMAND
CATCH UP TV ON DEMAND
TV CHOICE ON DEMAND
MUSIC ON DEMAND
BBC I PLAYER
YOU TUBE
7 DAY BACKWARDS EPG

So it does take a while to download all of this data as well.

Just my thoughts as I never had a S1 TIVO:confused:

How come when you go to the menus etc that sometimes the programme channel your watching appears in the box other times it says it cant be displayed?

It's for the same reason that the V Box and V+ Box switch to the on-demand preview channel when you go into Interactive while tuned to a Sky channel.

I'd ring Customer Services as fast as I could if I were you. You've only got until tomorrow to avoid the £40 installation charge.
