Re: 10mb connection
am i missing something here. i have a 10 meg connection here in belfast and i regulary download at 1.2 MB per second. is this the normal spped for a 10 meg line or should i be seeing more?
cheers big sinky |
Re: 10mb connection
I cant define normal but thats the max so is a good speed.
Out of interest what sources give you that speed assuming they public or are you saying no matter where you download from just random downloads you usually get 1.2meg ie. download.com etc. So I can compare directly. |
Re: 10mb connection
I seem to get 10 mbps or so most of the time,i am in the South East:

Re: 10mb connection
Just been off teh phone with ntl technical support, told him about the slow speed i cant get above about 80KB/s using teh web browser. although i am getting over 400KB/s off giganews :erm:
He went through some tests, made me boot up in safe mode and try the speed test (homepage.ntlworld.com/testmyspeed used the 2mb test) got about 25KB/s. He then took my ip details and changed server or summat and rebooted teh modem. Tried the test again and got 65KB/s. He then said that he had done all the tests he could do and booked me an engineer for thursday! He told me that he will assess the situation and see if i need a new modem, i then sarcastically replied, "Yeah, a new modem would be nice!" So hopefully when this dude turns up he can gimme a new 250 modem and i can put this nthell behind me! ;) I'll keep ya posted P.S I had to use my mobile to ring technical support as i dont have a house phone, was on hold for ages and the testing process went on fo a while. To cut a long story short i ended up using about £13 talktime! better than the £50 for the modem i spose. Been putting off ringin for ages |

have you had any luck resolving this? |
Re: 10mb connection
Just had the engineer round. I told him that i had been getting really slow speeds. I showed him the test my speed page (homepage.ntlworld.com/testmyspeed) was only getting 25KB/s :(
He had some sort of line tester thing with him and said that the connection was strong, checked the ping and was pretty good. Then said, "Well i'm gonna try a new modem and see if that works" He popped out to his van and appeared with a box containing the rather smart and compact looking blue 250 modem. He removed my old ntlhome 100 pants modem. he connected it up and started entering numbers into his phone, i assumed to send details of the new modem to be registered. Told me to wait 20 minutes and it should be sorted. 20 mins later: Thu, 11 May 2006 08:59:20 UTC 1st 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps 2nd 512K took 437 ms = 1171.6 KB/sec, approx 9654 Kbps, 9.43 Mbps 3rd 512K took 438 ms = 1169 KB/sec, approx 9633 Kbps, 9.41 Mbps 4th 512K took 422 ms = 1213.3 KB/sec, approx 9998 Kbps, 9.76 Mbps Overall Average Speed = approx 9821 Kbps, 9.59 Mbps Jobs a good un! I can now pay £35 quid a month and actually get 10mb! For those who are having similar problems (100 and 120 modems) dont hesitate to ring tech support and get your self a new modem. Dont put up with paying for a service you arent using. Cheers |

Considering it was a free upgrade, you can't ask for better. I might add though that even though I always get speeds like this, it depends hugely which website I am visiting or downloading from. Some are so slow that you feel like you are back on 512 but others fly. Also, sometimes my computer is on a bit of a go slow yet my laptop is flying. You can't always blame the broadband speed. PS I note that people who actually unddrstand what they are talkking about aren't the ones threatening to go to Talk Talk!!!!1 Good luck to those who are sucked in by the 'free' service!! Report back to us to let us know how good it is Lol |
Re: 10mb connection
Thats pretty impressive, decent efficeincy on that 10Mb line.
I was surprised earlier, getting 3.9mbps over the wireless link, usually struggle to hit 3.4 My question is, how does the weather effect line speeds? if at all... |

On a properly maintained and lined up network this shouldn't be an issue, and for most isn't. |

I am pleased to report that I get 1208kB/s on my 10meg line!
Well done NTL keep up the good work! Im in Buncefield/Hertfordshire ;) |
Re: 10mb connection
Usually i get 400-600KB/s could this have something to do with the Silver 120 Modem? Would a 250 help?

NTL 250s certainly improve the connection, more stable imo, I used to have a 120 and that was flaky. |
