I think the cheapest isnt always the best anyway ;) |

Back to this old argument, abyss shared hosting is dirt cheap and good isp's will not have the downtime you mentioned and certianly better uptime and reliability then a p3 500mhz running windows xp, but good luck to you and I hope you solve your current problems.

Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
Well so far, in the last 6 months, Ive had 98% uptime. Its only recently that the uptime has decreased due to my server woes. All is solved for now. Just need 10Mbps now so I can have that lovely upload speed. Shame its not 1Mbps upload though, there were a lot of roumours it would be 1Mbps upload. :(

as far as i'm aware whilst ntl do turn a blind eye to the odd ftp and server, running a commercial hosting company from a residential connection is a big no no.

Its a good job I dont do that then ;)
They say the only limits are that you dont go over caps, dont charge for any services you run otherwise it will be classed as a business (I give free hosting with limits but dont sell it), and you wont get support if anything goes wrong. Im happy with those terms and I also have my own TOS for the free hosting too. |

I'd tread carefully though, soliciting donations with the Paypal link might be pushing it :)

Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
Its donations, not paying for something. Its if someone wants to give some money to help to pay for running the server. It costs 30p a day in electricity alone to run it.
Ive been running it for 6 months, if they had a problem Im sure they would have said something by now. EDIT: Its not really a hobby, its just something Ive always wanted to do, its a responsibility keeping it online and running etc. 25KB/s is enough because I dont get more then 2 hits at any one time. The pages are small so take very little time to download, most less than 2 seconds. The site is limited to 10KB/s per user anyway, so 2 users can happily browse it and not know of it. The server has a global limit of 20KB/s, I reserve 5KB/s for home browsing. |

Well I enjoy doing these sorts of things so I put in the effort :)

Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
Wow you upped the cap? I downloaded the page at 15kB lightning fast vrooom.

Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
It will start off higher. All programs/servers with a limit do. Its still set to 10KB/s.

Re: Is it possible to get an upload speed increase if I pay a little extra?
Went on for a good 6 or 7 seconds sustained 15kB :) I take your word for it tho web browsing is hardly accurate way of measuring speed. Cached images etc. might have pushed it up.

Do whatever you wants.....................your money.....your server...
BTW, uptime 100% 90% or whatever is not an indication of a good server....neglected one may be!! But not always!! I have a dedicated server in the US (costs $60.00) Celeron 2.4, 40 GB, 256 DDRAM, 10 Mbit Up/Down…..2000 GB monthly limit….Redhat 9, Plesk 7.5.4. And in January I'm shifting to another one P4 1.6, 512, 80 GB, 100 Mbit Up/Down, and 1000 GB transfer for 39 euros!!!! In my house I have Fedora Core 4 installed in my laptop with Apache, SSH, FTP running….and I use www.DynDNS.org!!!! |
