Re: Opera now FREE !!

Ok, a dumb question ( well I'm the right bloke to ask them :dozey: :dunce:  :D )

Is there / could there be any adverse side effects from having 3 browsers instaled on one machine ?? I have IE and FF but tend to use FF more, I like the sound of Opera and thought I might give it a go, but what about uninstalling either or all, has anyone come across any problems ??

TIA

Well I have Avant (an IE 'skin' by another name) and Opera permanently on my m/c and I have also used FF in the past, all giving no problems, in fact I often had them all open together to compare web site rendering.

I know of other people who have 5 or 6 browsers operational on one PC (they use them for web site compatibility testing).

Go for it !

Posting al la Opera now, first impressions are so so, thats just me ( hate change ) speed looks ok, couple of image probs, I'll have to read up on a tutorial or 2, and then import favorites etc etc.

I used to think that until one day the browser croaked and I had to reinstall the OS. Then I realised what a really dumb idea it was to tie a browser so closely to the OS.

I now use FF and generally have no probs with the sites I go to and I'm reassured that I'm less likely to get hacked by some javascript or php.

Quicktime doesn't install itself in Opera. What you need to do to get it working is to close Opera, then copy the contents of the Plugins folder (all the files in C:\Program Files\QuickTime\Plugins) to the Opera plugins folder (probably C:\Program Files\Opera\program\plugins). Restart opera.

If you haven't installed Quicktime and Opera on drive C, just subsitute the the C with the correct drive letter.

We still use Netscape 4.5 at work (please - DON'T ASK!). The one thing I always liked about Messenger is the nsnotify app. For those that don't know it, it's a little app thats part of Netscape and runs in your system tray to check your email, without having to have the email client itself open.

It's a brilliant idea, but no other email client maker has ever taken it up - I've looked all over, but the nearest I've ever been able to find is a little app called Mailbox Verifier. The main problem seems to be that, although several apps like this have been written, they always start adding on capabilities until they wind up almost as email clients themselves - this defeats the (to me) main object, which is to have a small app in your system tray using negligible resources.

Mailbox Verifier is good; does the job very well, but doesn't integrate with my email client (Thunderbird) as well as I would like. Although clicking on it will open T'bird, I always have to select T'bird from a right-click list the first time after a boot. It's supposed to stop checking when the email client is open, but, in fact, carries on doing so, and it doesn't know when I download email it's flagged up until it checks for itself.

Just my observation... ;-)

Thunderbird has an extension that minimizes itself to the sys tray, and notifies you of new mail. Theres no need for an external App. :/

Delete the QT plugins from the Opera / Plugins folder, but leave them in the Opera / profiles / plugins folder and try again. I think ;)

Dunno why two plugins folders, but I have found from experience with plugin.dll's in both upsets their working correctly ??
