I ran my own email servers for years, and moved away from using my ntl address.

My wife kept on using hers until I finally decided to leave VM, at which point I created her a new address using Dreamhost as the provider (CFs email also used them). At the same time I decided to shut down my own servers and moved my email domains to use Hostinger. Both those providers had similar prices (about £1.50 per month).

At the start of this year I moved them all to another company, which costs me about 50p a month (and that includes both mine, my wifes, and CFs email).

I pay £3 for my hosting but he was part of the android /kodi scene so allows large file sharing as long as they are encrypted up to 50 GB each so worth keeping on

Junara seem very good at hiding their prices, but it seems it will be around £6.50 a month.

So that will be the final demise of my old accounts.

There are 3 price points and levels of storage for each private email mailbox, renewable either monthly or annually following the end of the 12 months free introductory offer (subject to a 99p transfer fee paid to Junara.)

Annual £59 Monthly £5.99 with 1GB storage.
Annual £79 Monthly £7.99 with 30GB storage
Annual £99 Monthly £9.99 with 100GB storage

Way too expensive.

If I were still on VM, I would take the free year and use it to move off their email addresses completely.
Since I'm not, I assume my old addresses will just cease to exist, not an issue, as they are not actually used anymore.

I left VM five years ago, my old @ntlworld address still worked until about a month ago. I assume that VM have finally managed to work this out and initiated a clean-up. Still I've had five years to move important stuff away from VM, no doubt there are one or two I've forgotten and it'll bite me in the backside at some point - cross that bridge when I come to it.

And yes, far, far too expensive - £6 a month for 1 Gig storage? The early 2000s are calling demanding their usage limits back!

Of course they are relying on people not wanting to lose their old email address and are prepared to pay whatever to keep it.

Started moving my emails to gmail/outlook a while ago. Ntlworld accounts were hacked several years ago thanks to a VM data breach, hence loads of junk/fishing mail. Good riddance, they can go swivel for charging for what others are providing for free.

Mine seems to have stopped working , was looking just in case something stuck on it . Meant to forward but that was always hit or miss. Simply can't get on it.However no message, what a surprise!

I also think part of the issue with email is people use it as storage, and end up with so much stored, it's a nightmare to move. Personally I archive emails off to local storage on a regular basis for safe keeping. That way my "ISP" mailbox is never too large and if it went bang, I still have the older emails archived elsewhere.

With having Gmail I never archive anything, in years to come I'll just delete old emails.

Hopefully I don't have any old important emails I need to keep!

I don't have an ISP email account now after moving away from VM, I never check my old VM accounts.

wow, thanks for heads up

I use my old ntlworld emails and use imap using thunderbird on a couple of machines at home to access email, so I have the emails locally, but it's a pain moving all the shop accounts, bills, banking etc to a different email address :(

the question is, do I move to gmail or outlook.com - i already have accounts with both

gmail or outlook is really personal choice. I have just completed transferring away from VM email even though I haven’t been notified of the service closing.

Use both, everyone should have more than one email address and I have all my accounts running throught the Outlook app as my app of choice.

Exactly this, the number of fights I've had with clients trying to convince them that email is a communication system, not a storage system. To, alas, little success - hence the oft weeping, wailing and gnashing of teeth, when 'vitally important' stuff vapourises.

One additional thing to check, and why you should have more than one email provider, is that the likes of Microsoft and Google ask for back up emails, and they can be useful in case anything happens to your primary email with them such as being locked out. At the least check with such companies that your virgin email isn't used for that purpose.

Re: VM transferring email services to Junara

I have (not including the ntlworld one) 6 different email addresses -

Family & friends
Utilities
Shopping
Travel (holidays/hotels/car hire/flights)
One for logging on to public WiFi (use a VPN whenever using public WiFi)
Gaming
Used to have another for when I was contracting, but not used anymore as I’m retired

I access them through a consolidated front-end (Gmail on PC, Mail on iPad)

I have outlook and Gmail providers all consolidated into Outlook I found Gmail does not work too well with 2FA when pulling in multiple accounts
