Well as long as there are eggs on the shelves I won't starve.

I see the media are all over this again today, many using alarmist quotes from the 'big business' sector that is now struggling.

First it was a cheap labour shortage, then there weren't enough shop workers, quickly followed by no drivers to haul the products (presumably still stuck in fields) to the supermarkets (where there was nobody to stack shelves), and now it's a CO2 shortage.

The chase for big profits has suddenly come to a grinding halt . . oh dear, what a shame, never mind.

Screw the supermarkets, buy from the small independents that value customers, our local butcher is doing a roaring trade :D

I find it ironic that whilst governments are trying to wean us off fossil fuels and onto "sustainable" electricity to reduce CO2 production, the wind drops so the wind turbines stop, the sun goes in so the solar panels don't work, therefore more fossil fuels must be used to keep us alive.

And so with more demand, the fossil fuel prices go up, causing fertiliser plants to shut down, and with them gone the CO2 supplies start to dry up. CO2 supplies that we need for many applications!

The only true sustainable source of energy is wave and water power. But every time "feasibility studies" for a Severn barrage are carried out, all they do is put money in the pockets of "consultants".

The government has struck a deal with a US company to restart production of carbon dioxide (CO2) at plants in the UK after warnings of food shortages.

CF Industries stopped work at two of its fertiliser factories, which supplies most of the CO2 used in food production, due to soaring gas prices.

CO2 is widely used in the food industry in brewing and in packaging for meat and salads to prolong shelf life.

It is not clear yet what incentives the government have offered the firm.

The business secretary previously ruled out nationalising the company, although providing financial support is still seen as an unusual move.

It could take as long as three days for the factories to start producing CO2 again at its plants in Cheshire and Stockton-on-Tees.

Red Conservatives to the rescue with the taxpayers' cheque book. But did they have much of a choice?

The government could end up giving tens of millions of pounds of taxpayers' money to an American company to help it restart carbon dioxide production at two plants, a minister has told Sky News.

Speaking to Kay Burley, Environment Secretary George Eustice said that without the "temporary" agreement with CF Fertilisers there would have been food supply problems and the government "needed to act".
This is what I dislike about the press hacks. Instead of giving prominence to the bit I've put in italics, the first thing they do is to put a negative spin on the government's wise action.

Today's Grauniad is not much better; the headline reads:

Quote:

Bailout of US CO2 supplier will cost UK taxpayers ‘millions’
I can't find the topic covered in the online edition of the Torygraph. But I don't think the headline will be any less nuanced than the Grauniad.

Aren't you putting your own spin on the 'wise' Govt. ? :)
