Re: New router recommendations

Anyone know a router with similar spec to those mentioned but in a more compact form.

Dimensions no more than 20cm deep, 20cm high, length isn't an issue.

Is there any benefit in changing to the latest merlin firmware on my Asus RT-AC87U.
It is currently running the latest DDWRT asus firmware.

Read the changelog and decide for yourself.

I only use the Merlin firmware because it lets me switch the lights off on the front of the router from the web interface. With the stock firmware, you have to use the button on the router (I'm using an Asus RT-AC68U) and keep on doing this every time you reboot the router (which isn't the case with the Merlin option).

Came across this which may be of use:

Tuning The Asus Wireless Router To Best Performance

He gives comparisons with ASUS, Merlin, DD-WRT, Tomato, etc.

Let us know how you get on with Merlin on the AC87U if you decide to go with this combination? I have a N66U and am thinking of moving to this model and am interested in the stability.

The current Merlin variant I use (see sig.) is rock solid and is happy with all the various wireless clients we have ..

Hey Everyone

The birthday fairy is going to get me a new router in the next few weeks. I've been pretty happy with Asus offerings to date but think I may give Linksys a go (I know the General will be happy ;)).

I'm not too bothered about tri-band - maybe next time, so I've been looking at three possibilities:
WRT1900ACS (possibly WRT1900AC)
EA7500
EA6900

Anybody got any comments? Or even suggest other makes/models?

Thanks in advance

Cheers

Grim

So I ignored all my own suggestions and went for an EA8500.

Does anyone know if Linksys are going to comply with the FCC rules and block third party firmware?

Cheers

It looks like DD-WRT is available for it

Always be careful with installing custom firmware
