It works, but it will only show you other wireless networks.

And even then it won't show all wireless networks. Anyone can hide a wireless network with this one simple trick. Even the Superhub can do it.

The 2.4ghz spectrum is unlicensed, which means all kinds of things use it - Bluetooth, Baby monitors, some home automation systems, hell even some Microwaves produce interference in this frequence range - and none of that will show up. Don't get me wrong, it's a great app and I use it myself, but it is not the be-all and end-all, you're still better off checking different channels all the same.
I've told him this about five times already but he refuses to listen.

Plus - it's a total merrygoround. Everyone is doing the same, rebooting, resetting and thus if you can see three more different 2.4GHz SSIDs, eventualy each one ends up in the same boat as before. And that's without the microwave oven buggeration factor and mobile phone hotspot beacons.

Not disagreeing with your general point, but I think the app does still show up networks with a hidden SSID. It just shows a MAC address on top of it. Unless you're talking about something different.

Depends on the method of "hiding". In some simple cases, yes. It also depends on whether the phone/wireless driver reports blank ESSIDs correctly.
