No!

Why not upgrade then, might solve the problem, or get them to give it to you for free as it's causing you so much trouble.

Then it's an SA V+ HD box i.e. this one:

That's the one I have. Are these the boxes that are currently being scrapped in favour of SA boxes?

Faulty V+ boxes are currently being replaced with another V+ box. Seems a waste of time to me as they will eventually have to be replaced with a TiVo software compatible box anyway!

From what I can gather, TiVo boxes are offered with free installation...then this is recouped by charging for something spurious like a connection/admin fee- or have I got this wrong

New V+HD box installed. The explanation was that it was probably a hard drive issue. He did however check the inner connection where the wiring comes into the house.Something about H&S..

I asked what would happen to the old box.He said that it would be inspected and tested and notes made on the errors and issues with it for future reference.

My OH won't pay the installation charge.

You can get a TiVO with self installation, there's no charge for this apart from the box costing an extra £5 per month, I think it's called swap V+ for TiVO or something like that.

It's £20 for self install delivery

Not according to a lady I spoke to yesterday in retentions Ben, I asked about swapping and charges, she said it would be an extra £5 per month and there was no installation charge, I also asked about returning my old V+ and she told me to put it in the box that the TiVo arrived in and send it back.

No, Virgin won't activate it. Any kit has to come directly from Virgin Media to you.

Seems a bit mean of them as it will only go back into the neighbours loft or his bin! No doubt if I did give them a ring they`d try and sell me another tivo box.

If one of those boxes goes faulty, you'll get a Samsung V+ HD box as it's replacement

TiVo and V+ HD are not the same product. There is a different pricing structure for customers on XL tv for a start - it has to be a chosen change.

That's Disconnections, who do have some leeway in costs under certain circumstances. However I was talking about the standard cost, which is £20.

It's not mean at all - how do Virgin Media know what has happened to the box. It could not work at all, it could have been tampered with electrically or mechanically to be unsafe for either the customer or the local network or, very unlikely these says, have been altered to bypass the network security.

So far no recurrence of the rebooting..so Mr Coulter should get phoning VM..

So when the disconnected my services because of a mix up over payments not going through then reconnecting me some days later how do they know the box hadn`t been `tampered` with in between times? Besides which I am on the highest package with sky sports and movies so how can I gain anything illegal. As for being tampered with electrically I`ve already tested it and no big bangs or flames from the box!
Another thing is Sky have no such issues with doing it even when the box hasn`t come direct from them so again I say virgin are mean.

I'm not feeling hard done by.V+ or Tivo, the set top boxes are the property of VM and they may distribute them as they see fit.

Not the same situation at all - Virgin Media have issued the box to you, and as you say, not long enough for it to be an issue. Reconnecting a 'found' box is different.

Sky sell you the box as part of your minimum term subscription, Virgin Media don't. Sky charge to fix boxes outside a warranty period, Virgin Media don't. Different business model.

When we had a V+ box is used to reboot at the most inconvenient of times, ie 7pm when watching live tv or a recording.

so wrong on all accounts mate. The issue with `tampering` with the box to gain free services as you indicated previously is the same for a sky box or a virgin media box. As for not long enough I wouldn`t know how long is long enough to tamper with a box but my guess is a matter of hours not weeks as in the case of my `no service` period!
Anyway I will find out next week as I intend on phoning virgin for an offical `ruling`. I will let you know

Was it a SA box like mine and replaced with a Samsung, or did you have a Samsung anyway?

Mine has been stable the last couple of days; I'm reluctant to swap until I've watched my outstanding recordings.

I don't blame your OH for refusing to pay the TiVo charge, I wouldn't either. I think it's a cheek to keep charging for a new PVR, as it is I paid an upfront charge for the V+ when I got it.

In the end, when they want to decommission non TiVo software compatible boxes, I'm sure that they will provide us with a TiVo with no upfront cost if the alternative is losing our monthly subscriptions.
