So will we get any emails that would have been recieved during the outage or are they lost forever?

Depends on the sender but most likely lost. The majority of email services will try a few times before bouncing in case it's a temporary problem, however when they get NXDOMAIN errors they tend to not retry anywhere near as much as it's considered a 'permanent' error. ---------- Post added at 15:20 ---------- Previous post was at 15:18 ----------

Perhaps I should try squatting it so I can nick everyone's emails the day they go offline.

 Already got a few Gmail accounts, but have kept the 12 year old ntlworld.com ones going as well. And getting my other half to change hers is nigh on impossible!
Had to ditch my Yahoo mail account after it was seriously compromised along with 100,000's of others earlier this year.

Absolutely. I don't know of a single provider that hasn't experienced outages, though. Office 365 has had its share of problems as well. Still, I don't think either it or Gmail has experienced outages as long as Virgin's has.

That and just not using an ISP email is a good idea, no matter who you go with.

So we potentially have 30 days before ntlworld.com goes again? Yipee! I wonder just how many different companies I'd need to contact to update my email address? Still may be worth planning for disaster day now.

I thought Virginmedia mail was hosted by Google now anyway

I changed my email address over to @virginmedia.com as soon as it became available a couple of years ago. Rather than worrying about having to change your registered address with every tom, dick and harry all you have got to do is go into myvirginmedia, register the new email address, link it to you ntlworld email address and set the virginmedia one as your primary email address and all your mail will go to the @virginmedia.

No. @ntlworld.com won't be going again - this was an error.

Except that wouldn't have helped here - if the mails won't go to the @ntlworld.com address in the first place then they can't get forwarded to anything else.

There are no plans to stop supporting the @ntlworld.com domain, and if there ever would be, it would be correctly communicated with options available for everyone.

Whatever happened here was an error, that has now been fixed and won't happen again.

Pretty much but you're also sadly relying on Virgin be competent enough to not **** about with DNS records.

Still can't actually tell if this was caused by them effing around with it, or forgetting to eff around with it.

Someone obviously made a mistake, it happens.
They will have made changes to stop it happening again (as much as is possible).

Im sure they are just as frustrated about it as everyione else, since it must have caused a mass of issues & fallout they had [have] to deal with.

The Domain ntlworld.com was renewed yesterday 26/08/14 .

The first fault reports were around 15:00 25/08/14 but Virgin Media timed the fault at 08:30 26/08/14 with an estimated fix time of 12 hours.
