If they were still nationalised you'd be paying a lot more IMO, if not in bills then in taxes to support them. I remember how chronically in-efficient and strike ridden the state sector was in the 70's.

But if there was some sort of real control in place so this obvious price fixing was not allowed then the consumer would not be continually ripped off

Smallest increases in the part of the country that is usually warmer in winter, so less heating required. Go figure....

we are all being legally ripped off day in day out

It was awful. Everything from power to the post office and railways to the docks were on strike and making people suffer. It just made bankrupt and inefficient industries even worse off and drained more money from the taxes paid by the workers.

No surprise with this announcement by BG and my thoughts go to those who have to choose between keeping warm or feeding themselves.

I remember riding my motorbike and all of a sudden the street lights, house lights - everything went off. I actually thought there was about to be a nuclear bomb explosion! Horrible days.

May be some of the younger folk could do with carrying out a bit of research on what life was like pre privatisation and some of the older folks (Arthur) need to turn off their selective memory

To top it all off, our future nuclear power will be in the hands of another country again: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-24561325

We need to keep nuclear power nationalised. We saw how the french EDF has helped raise prices and keep the money flowing out of the country, now we are giving them the money to make the plants and China the profits. :(

Exactly ,it took a basic tax rate of 36% and a top rate of 83% in the mid 70's to keep those industries afloat .I really can't believe that people are suggesting going back to that ,or maybe it is only those that don't work and don't pay tax that are suggesting it

l know exactly what it was like pre privatisation but can you tell me which privatisation has given us the consumer a better deal and service then we had before and the answer to that is clear for anybody to see nowadays.

Southern Railway is a vast vast improvement on the same area in BR days. The stations are clean tidy and staffed by polite decent people. Yes there are delays but it is a vast improvement on the BR times and more trains run especially in the evening.

Connex inbetween BR and Southern were pretty dire but then wow!

I don't think that the GPO would have or even been able to invest what BT have .

Yes they were not that good but look what we have now and that is a poor inconsistent postal service and postal rates for stamps and parcels rising through the roof as we posted something the other day and it cost us nearly £10 for a smallish parcel.

Re: Bad news everyone SSE to raise energy prices aprox 8.2 %

Whilst demand for gas and oil in the developing countries continues to increase, prices will increase as the producers and stock markets play the capitalist game.

No individual government will stop this, all they could do is make stupid comments such as Millibrain did recently that cause damage that anyone with a brain could foresee.
