Nice that you can afford that high end technology, tizmeinnit! However, some have TVs that are not high end, and where these are large screens, the picture quality is nicely enhanced by HD.

I don't see why the kids have to put up with inferior picture quality.

They should count themselves lucky they don't have to put up with a portable black and white tv watching it via a VHS, lol.

I also agree that for the age group of CEBBIEs or whatever it is, I can't see them noticing picture quality.

You don't credit them with much intelligence, do you? I can assure you that they are attracted to nice, clear, colourful pictures.

Two of the BBC's new channels - BBC Three HD and CBBC HD - will utilise existing unused capacity, and CBeebies HD and BBC Four HD will share a channel since they will not be broadcast at the same time.

Sort out the problems with regional programming, so we dont have to change to SD channel first.

They're planning to do that.

Would be great if VM got regional HD channels and BBC Two Scotland when that comes around...

HD childrens channels what a waste of bandwidth

Yeah, totally. Bring back 405 line VHF, life was so much simpler.

The UK has settled on a broadcast standard of 1080 high definition. It will be simpler and therefore cheaper for broadcasters to originate and broadcast all their content this way without having to worry about final output definition. Almost everything the BBC makes is shot in HD now anyway. Some of the kids stuff was on the BBC-HD showreel because it, too, had been made in HD.

There are no problems - regionalisation of HD was always going to be phased in. They did the Nations a little while ago, the English Regions will follow shortly.

Today's announcement is a victory for those who have lobbied hard for Ofcom to reserve some of the UHF spectrum reclaimed from analogue TV so it could continue to be used for digital TV. Ofcom's position for many years has been that its remit was to monetize the spectrum by flogging it all off and if broadcasters wanted it, they would have to bid for it on the open market against the telecoms firms that want it for 4g and other uses. This position was patently absurd - our broadcast industry has developed a business model over many decades which was based on the assumption that the broadcast spectrum would simply be available; they were never going to be able to bid for and win it on the open market.

Ofcom has announced that it is reserving enough UHF spectrum for 10 HD channels. The BBC is now able to announce the launch of HD versions of almost all its output because its platform-neutral policy had prevented it from doing so previously. It could have launched all these HD channels on cable and satellite some time ago but it was lack of room on Freeview that held them back.

This has nothing to do with MB's forthcoming from VM announcement. These BBC HD channels are for launch early next year....

What surprises me the most is that almost everyone here is screaming for HD channels, and so the BBC obliges. Next thing is some are complaining about some of them being childrens channels.

Strange though I did not hear the same complaints when other children's channels went HD !

I must agree Mutley that if BBC were not launching their other channels in HD there would be a whacking great complaint thread on here!!

yeah but I am allowed as you aint ever seen me scream for more HD channels

I did not complain then as I know nothing about it so I will now. What a waste HD kids channels kids should be playing outside

I am sorry that the fact I would rather have something else appears to have been seen as a abhorrent view I can understand with my politics but with this oh what a laugh

Re: BBC to Launch 5 New HD Channels

I would happily see CBBC and Cbeebies merged into a single channel. CBBC content is aimed at kids who should be at school for half the time the channel is live. That's a clear waste of money.

But extending HD across the BBC's output is primarily about streamlining and reducing cost. The next step will be to switch channel numbers so the HDs are the defaults. Then when HD uptake is high enough the SD channels can disappear.

Jameseh 16-07-2013 14:34

Re: BBC to Launch 5 New HD Channels

If CBBC HD/Cbeebies HD weren't launching nothing else would, they don't affect you whatsoever so where the hell is the problem.
