My son's best friend is at Oxford (was on the reserve crew for the Boat Race), and he went to a state school, so, no, you sweeping generalisation in this, and so many other matters, doesn't hold water...

btw, methinks you do protesteth too much....

yes all very well but you can't get away from the "cap in hand" courtseying to Lord Prescott (for Christ sakes) mentality that exists in this so called enlightened day and age

Anyway can we at least agree that the word hasn't been hijacked? It's been known under it's current definition for a long time already and there isn't really a concept of 'hijacking' a word in such a way, rather words and language change and evolve over time. Been conservative over the evolution of language is a mug's game, you'll be fighting a losing battle.
