I will try removing AVG.... is there any antivirus software out there that does not slow down the PC.

I use kaspersky, and confirm it does not exhibit any "slowdown" for me on 30mb. I pay for 30 and (unless I hit stm or theres a fault), I get an average of 33mb.

However, Kaspersky does do funky things with speedtests. so I have to "Pause Protection" when speedtesting at speedtest.net.

I usually test my speed with 3 simultaenous downloads anyway.

Suspended AVG done speedtest.net a slight improvement. Downloaded 1 gig file took 5 minutes at 12mb/s is that good?

Puzzled - 1GB downloaded in 5 mins is around 3.33MB/s or 26.66Mb/s i.e around the 27Mb/s that you originally reported.

Try JDast as per post here for a better, multifile, test but I suspect (as per Ben's advice in post 2) that your ethernet card driver is to blame.

It is because your numbers dont tally up dude. If it took you 5 mins to download 1gb then that equates to 3.3MB/sec download speed which is 27mbits

I am not a yank dude... anyway one has ordered a new ethernet card to to see if that is the problem.
