Re: The London 2012 Olympics: Current affairs discussion
The torch thing was great. Literally passing the torch to the next generation, plus that cauldron was awesome.
... But to then end with McCartney and Hey Jude? Still, other than that: Great stuff. I won't be watching any of the actual sporting events, though. |

I watched the ceromony just now, was ok and all, I still am angry at the waste of money tho. Also that the queen looked bored and cameron looked very moody, both seemingly not wanting to be there.

A totally awesome event. And the Queen parachuted into the stadium with James Bond. Top that, Rio. :D

Re: The London 2012 Olympics: Current affairs discussion
I was surprised whilst watching the Olympic opening ceremony.
Why wasn't Kerry Katona carrying the Iceland flag? |
Oh no! Not the Olympics.
Just had a look at the TV listings for the next 2 weeks
BBC1, BBC1HD, BBC3, BBCHD + all the other channels being provided for over the coming weeks dedicated to the Olympics. So we all have to pay for this service via the license fee yet we all don't want to watch it & having a quick browse of what's on the 2 channels left BBC2 & BBC4 I think that I should receive a 4% discount on my TV license as I will be watching ZERO BBC content over the next 2 weeks. The BBC is supposed to be about choice, what choice is there when there are a total of 28 channels dedicated to this spectacle & 2 channels full of crap for those that have no interest. Call me what you want, killjoy, boring (insert word) or anything else. Having this shoved down my throat is not sitting well with me. All I see is wasted money, tax & license fee payers money all £9Billion of it & once its all done & dusted I can guarantee the total final cost of this to the tax payer will be in excess of £11Billion. |
Re: The London 2012 Olympics: Current affairs discussion
I was a confirmed cynic of the Olympics. But, and I don't often openly offer this, was I wrong!!
The ceremony was incredible Brannagh played his role brilliantly. Very pleased that it wasn't the expected "England-centric" stuff, it captured the essence of the UK perfectly. Only 3 downers for me - Liz's "opening speech" was given with all the gusto of a "I'm sorry but we're going to have to let you go" speech, The long wait for Team GB was distracting - I realise all countries needed an introduction but still I almost nodded off at times. And Macca at the end looked (and sounded) like he'd just been woken up. In retrospect I think I'd have preferred a 'supergroup' made up of Macca, Brian May and Roger Taylor, Bowie and one or two others singing something like 'Rule Britannia' or 'We are the champions'. But other than that I think Danny Boyle has booked his knighthood and rightly so :) |
Re: The London 2012 Olympics: Current affairs discussion
I actually agree with all three of your "downers".
The Queen's speech should have been longer and right at the end. Question..is the host nation's team always the last in? (as otherwise that was stupid!) Other than that... awesome. And, as for alferret, well... there's always one I suppose but I shan't drag the thread OT to explain why he's completely and utterly wrong. |
