I started off with x-stream (freel dial up connection) - then moved onto ntl dial up.

AOL dial up sometime in the 90s. I then "progressed" via freeserve dial up to a nynex dial up (predeccessor to C&W, NTL and VM), before nynex finally introduced broadband via STB to my area.

I got my first modem a US Robotics 33k dial up modem which had a flash update to take it to 56k.

That was with Global Internet now Madasafish (I still have a web domain with them).

I started with Force 9 in the late 90's on a 14.4k modem and then moved on to ntl cable at 128k :)

I think it was Freeserve which I think was around '97 '98 I had just made the move from bulletin boards iirc.
Edit: maybe it was UKREG, then freeserve...

First one ever? around 1994/5 on Pipex on a 99 hour trial program (including TCP/IP stack as it was on Win 3.11) that dialled a free number. I worked out what file it created in the system that you could delete and start again

First proper one was a local one in Southampton that used to run lines on Videotron so didn't have to pay any call costs only a subscription fee, long before Freeserve. Used to be a nightmare to actually get connected in evenings and weekeds though, lots of redialling!

For me it was Compuserve (or something like that) that was then taken over by AOL?. I remember compuserve very well because we used to get the free trial discs in the pc mags every month. Just used to keep setting up a new account for a free months trial lol. Was using a 14k modem back in those days to.

The first propper 1 all inclusive ISP would have been Freeserve

Re: Who was your first isp and what year was it

Started with FreeServe dial-up in 1998 using a 28kb/s modem.

Got NTL cable in 2003, should have been the 128kb/s service but they messed up on the install dates and gave me 600kb/s as compensation, I've been on 10Mb/s service for several years but now it's seriously deteriorating I'm considering a move to BT Infinity.

I still have the "Freeserve" dial-up, now run by Orange, as it comes in useful sometimes!

Ah, memories of the days NTL used to sell 128k as 'broadband'. :D

First isp OMG I'm ashamed to admit aol in 97 v.5, I think the instillation disk actually came free to a Domino's pizza box that again ashamed was order thru sky interactive!!! but thankfully BCM came along and I ditched both sky and aol.
