It is compliant and capable right out of the box but the OS itself isn't really designed to be used by a touchscreen (small buttons etc and max 9 point callibration). I do have some experience with this on my Q1U, it gets a little tricky at times and i often end up using the built in joystick instead.

What ZrByte said. Even XP had touch input drivers. Win7 comes with drivers pre-installed but it's still designed to be operated by a mouse. It's not the same as Android and other phone OSes where touch input is the sole method of input.

That is interesting - I have a genuine Windows 7 Professional disk & the sim from a Vodaphone payg mobile 3G dongle that could be installed - thanks punky :)

<edit> it doesn't seem to have an 'ordinary' network cable (rj45) slot, which means a wireless router would be needed to connect to my 'home' network ... that is a big disadvantage, I much prefer a wired connection ??

so whats left? full linux or windows? Most likely windows dont you think? its gotta be something with some kinda app lib or as in the case of windows vast compatability with regular software. Anything with out app support will just crash and burn.

It could always be a rewritten android with better support for different features?

Yet Microsoft have said that Win 7 is their Tablet OS. Apparently, no one is allowed to release a tablet running Windows Phone 7.

Could go with maemo or meego. It's essentially a full linux stripped down and a tablet style interface on top. Works well on the nokia n900. Lot of apps for maemo and there is talk of continued support on meego when it takes over.

So, after the sudden emergence of the tablet market in 2010, thanks to the iPad, I think the tablet market is going to *really* take off in 2011.

As well as the inevitable iPad 2 in a few months, the iPad's competition is finally getting serious. This year will see several new tablets using Android 3.0 (Honeycomb, the version meant for tablets), along with the BlackBerry PlayBook and other devices.

none of them are gonna be real cheap though are they lets face it. But that Xoom looks good

If I find my Archos invaluble then I will most likely invest in a Honeycomb tablet but if it does not then obviously I wont. At least if I dont use the Archos it aint cost a monkey

Yeah, price is obviously an issue!

If the Galaxy Tab costs around the same as the iPad, I hate to think what the PlayBook & Xoom would cost...


I expect that the mobile networks will offer subsidised tablets (as they do now with the iPad, & as they do in the US with the Tab)... but how many people really want *another* monthly contract?

I bloody don't, that's for sure. I already have a mobile phone contract, there's no way I'd take out a mobile data contract as well just to get a subsidised iPad/Tab/Xoom/PlayBook etc.
