Youngsters always will want to be different from the older generation, its only when you are older you realize how dopey you must have come across as a teenager, a right of passage most of us have been through no doubt.:)
As regards inane speech one of the worst has to be somebody repeating over and over after every few words..."You know what I'm saying right", what a completely pointless thing to keep saying, unless of course you are addressing an amoeba.:)

What was it Rowan Atkinson's Inspector Fowler once said, "sometimes I wish I could go live on radio four", the older I get the more attractive this sounds.:)

As long as i can understand what someone is saying how they say it is entirely upto them personally. What i absolutely hate with a passion though and had many arguments with my son about is white teenagers talking as though they are from some ghetto in the states and are off out on the nightly drive by. Most of the non white teens i know have made it clear they hate hearing white people copy their speech and trying to act like them and i fully understand it. Be who you are and be proud of it don't try and be something your not because you think it sounds cool it doesn't and frankly makes you look like a complete moron.

where does this information come from then ?
do the children keep in contact and discuss their employment status with you ,i only ask because when i left school like most people i had no further contact with my teachers ,you must have a better relationship with your students than most teachers do :tu:.

I live in the town where I teach.I teach in the town where I live..and I suspect I have far more connection with what's going on with young school leavers than you do..I meet old pupils ALL the time when out and about,most of them are working, some have gone on to college and thence to university or work.

As to your experiences of old teachers I can only say mine was different.I did keep in touch with those that I respected and until my school was closed and amalgamated into another I went back regularly to see staff.Even then I met them out and about my town. How sad you felt no affection or respect for your old teachers enough to let them know how you were doing.It's something teachers love when old pupils make the effort to keep in touch..

In fact one old pupil married one of my second cousins..and I know she is still working.;)

In fairness i have to agree with Maggy here the vast majority of teenagers do indeed leave school and go on to do something positive and productive from what i can see locally and within the larger county where i live. Yes there are those who prefer to lounge about on street corners doing nothing but being a pain but they are a minority and should be recognised as such. I think the saddest thing about the UK these days is how happy we are to accept generalisations about all groups without questioning or seeing for ourselves or basing that generalisation on the small spectrum we see or choose to see. It is happening all over and is a corosive force in our country and then usually the same people that apply all these generalisations then ask why things are getting so bad why does group A act like they do against group B.

i have to agree Rizzy ,in my personal experience and as recent as last weekend i managed to find some labour for the weekend in my local amongst the local teenagers ,fair enough they spoke funny and i couldn't use any big words but they did turn out for work on saturday and sunday and did what i wanted ,which is fair enough in my book
