Seems to me that VM are in a no win situation regarding this based on customer reactions.

If it's going to reduce the chance of potential viral infections I would have thought this would be a good thing as not everyone is computer literate!

Its a good thing it will help those who do not have the know how and protect them. Those who do know what they are doing will be able to sort it out. Its a good thing. Hotmail has done similar for a long time

The 20 meg attachment is excellent

I take it we're not going to be offered five 7GB mailboxes with the new service, so are they consolidating all of the existing mailboxes into one large mailbox? I have all five in use with different aliases and passwords and don't really fancy the prospect of other members of my family poking around in my email. How does Gmail work with regard to this?

No you will have 10 mailboxes all with 7Gb so a slight improvement.;)

Have I just missed the glaringly obvious bit where it says that in the email/FAQ then (it's a distinct possibility)?

So I cannot send a *.bat file to someone to help them out, what if I rename it *.bak and tell them to rename it.

Next step banning attachments

An unfair comment. It is rightly there to protect those not "PC savvy". All the files listed can be sent using the correct archiver.

Bottom line if you know what you are doing and the person at the other end is informed or already knows then it is no problem whatsoever and is a good form of security for those who don't know better.

Same as with Sky's mail, which is also a rebranded GMail, this won't happen. VM are paying Google for this, unlike the rest of us using GMail who get it for the cost of having Google spider our mail to advertise to us :)

Mind you some systems look beyond that to see if you have done that.

I agree but why should the majority be affected by those in the minority that are to stupid to own a PC and even turn the thing on.:D

Unless of course you use an email client which will screen them out. You only get the advertising if you access your mail directly from the Gmail server.

Thanks.

In that case I have little problem with this.
