His actions were deplorable but the "hang em high" brigade are now on his case and he doesn't deserve what's now inevitably coming his way.

It seems likely he could be thrown out of university. That's a disgrace. The punishment needs to fit the crime. He's going to end up with a criminal record, no university course, no job, no future. All because he got too drunk and did something he shouldn't.

Whilst remaining appalled at what he did, if he is chucked out of university it is a step too far. Where has the compassion gone in our society? He made an error of judgement. Who hasn't? Give the lad another chance.

I know of three "old soldiers", not one of them supports chucking him out of university.

I heard on the radio today, that the British legion are looking for more volunteers, especially younger people to help with their poppy day appeal.
Maybe this could be a way he could show how remorseful he is, by giving up some of his free time to help such a worthy cause.

Just as long as we keep a sense of proportion about this case it could be the making of this young man.Now he has to prove that he is better than this incident.

I am wondering whatever happened to being allowed to make mistakes and learn from them when you are young.:(

And I still lay some of the blame at the feet of whomever it was that organised a pub crawl in he first place.:rolleyes:

I think the young man is genuinely sorry for what he did, i`d like to punch the **** out of him for being so disrespectful, but you live and learn, we all do stupid things when we`re drunk don`t we?
Hopefully he might learn this time to have a bit more respect for his elders.
Thats the way i was brought up.;)

That drunk he didn't see the wreaths sorry give me a break he knew what he was peeing on and the only reason he is sorry is because like so many like him these days they think it is ok to do anything you like if you don't get caught. As for beating the hell out of him why what purpose would that serve i think it is time to bring in lifetime bans for some people on some things main ones being drink and driving always makes me laugh when we have people that are completely lousy with either get little bans repeatedly. But lets not try making up excuses for him we have all been drunk and all been busting for one but even at my worst i would know a memorial when i saw it and so did he.

Sorry, but having been a student, and still being friends with students, I take offence at the prejudice shown in these two posts. Yobs exhibit the kind of behaviour shown by this person, and most students (in my experience) are not yobs.

Shocking overreaction if it happens. This would be why jails are full.

Again. Stupid, idiotic, move. However considering he was very, very drunk and that he seems to be remorseful at his actions as well as having to be humiliated in the national press I think it's best to let him get on his degree. Do a week's service at the Royal British Legion.

He doesn't deserve his life ruined and a prison sentence.

It was a stupid, irresponsible act which needs addressing. But for crying out loud, prison, who will that help? Give the boy some community service, sell some Poppy's, help some pensioners, punish him, I`m sure he already feels lower than whale poop.

I`m ex Army & I don't like this sort of disrespect, but Lets keep this in perspective.

I think a fine, n hours of community service, and perhaps being sent to talk to the Chelsea Pensioners would do him a bit of good....

Contrast the suggested sentence for this one crime with the sentence for someone with many more crimes to his name.:rolleyes:

I agree with that one, I was talking to a Chelsea Pensioner last Saturday in our local town who was collecting for the poppy appeal, he was 93 and didn't look a day over 70, I had a good 10 minutes with him and got talking about this **** bag in Sheffield, he said the same as you let him talk to the Chelsea Pensioners.
