Well there are no plans to change the President of the European Union term from 6 months to five years, so you heard it wrong.

Well I can only assume that one Labour politician thinks it's the case because I heard him say so..And no I cannot remember hearing his name.

Research by The Mail on Sunday has found that if Mr Blair serves the maximum five years – two consecutive two-and-a-half year terms – he will net a package worth £3.65million. His salary will be taxed at a special rate for Eurocrats, averaging 25 per cent.
from the OP.

Now I know we distrust the Mail but surely they must have got the idea from somewhere as did I.

Tony Blair's hopes of becoming president of the European Council are fading after his supporters failed to secure the backing of EU leaders.

Meanwhile ratification of the Lisbon Treaty, which creates the post, moved closer after EU leaders struck a deal with the Czech president.
So which position are we talking about here?

Yes excellent news - not that he ever had a real chance of being elected. It'll go to some Belgian bloke with a personality bypass.

If unsurprising. Gordon has, rather cleverly, appeared to use the whole Blair smokescreen to get his own nonentity, Baroness Ashton, into the foreign affairs role. It was a stitch up, as expected - the dominent Right got a Christian right-winger in as President, the largest Left group got one of theirs into the High Commissioner role.

Incidentally, all of this does go to show how silly the whole 'bye bye UK' stuff about Lisbon was - what's happened is exactly what always happens in international diplomacy, the big boys carve it up between them and do deals behind closed doors. The trick is to remain one of the big boys, if you're a realist.

BBC News - Ashton: 'I am best person for EU foreign job'

I like this quote by Nigel Farage:

Quote:

"Baroness Ashton is ideal for the role. She has never had a proper job and never been elected to public office."

Can't say I'm surprised that two complete non-entities who are unknown outside their own countries got the jobs.... What a horrible waste of time, energy and money the EU has become....

You'd have preferred Blair then? What's happened is that the EU turns out to be a group of sovereign states in a trading union, which I thought was what Eurosceptics wanted?

Re: is Blair to become EU President ?

So how many of the the rules and directives are only concerned with it just being a trading union?
