If yoo cant see anything at all a trip to the docs couldn't have been too pleasant??

That's what my cane is for ;) Anyway I have a cataract in one eye. The other one is just really bad.

Mine are/were in the early stages. I had trouble focussing on things and anything further than a yard or two was blurry, and it was worse in my right eye so I had that one out. My vision through that eye is now incredible, it's like going from black and white tv to hi-def.

My left eye still has a cataract but it's pretty much underdeveloped. Chances are i won't need to be having it out until at least a year. I now need reading glasses (apparently I look quite 'distinguished' in them...) but it's worth it for the clear vision.

The diabetic retinopathy that Jefferson T mentioned earlier has caused him to be registered blind - the cataracts are an extra handicap to what little vision he has left ...

The worst thing I've had was acute nephritis as a kid, when I spent a week in hospital.

Im really squirming reading this (have a really strong eye phobia)

I'm too curious to not ask, though..

How do they take them out? And are you conscious whilst they do this??

Worst: Encephalitis. Often fatal, those it doesn't kill are often left with permanent brain damage (my finger is hovering over the ban button so don't even think about it :p: )
Weirdest: A pilonidal sinus. Basically, an inflamed hair follicle in your butt crack that can get infected. To get rid of it you have to have an operation which involves having part of your crack sliced open and then sewn back together. Then you can't sit down for a week. :disturbd:

I get those in my clinic sometimes.....
Pt: "my 'back' hurts"
Me: "show me where......ah, I see, get yourself to casualty" :D
Sometimes GP's send them to me because they haven't examined the pt :rofl:

Heh heh, now we're talking!

For about an hour before the op, they put eye drops in every 5 minutes or so as an anaesthetic. Then you get taken in to the operating theatre, lay down on the table and they use this paper with a really strong sticky substance on it and place it over each eyelid to keep them open. More eye drops then they make a small cut in the iris, send in a needle to pull the lens out, then they replace is with an artificial one which will be folded up but it puts itself right once it's in place.

They remove the sticky paper and all done.

And yes, awake all the way through :D

Strangest illness: What I have right now......might be rheumatoid arthritis/multiple sclerosis/chondrocalcinosis/lupus/thyroid.....who knows.....it's defying diagnosis so far :p:

I'll say this, anyone who's been through an eye operation while still awake isn't really afraid of much else :D
