Firstly at the end of this, what has been for me highly informative and useful thread, I would like to thank all the forum members involved, but especialy Bender who gave me the the solution to my four day problem.

I ran the sfc with Windows XP Pro disc, and after rebooting there was a message at top screen which had never been there before saying "Please Wait".

When the boot was complete I experienced that magic moment when the out side internet world came into my brothers laptop, many thanks for your help Bender.

Best Regards ravel.

Thing is - if it was a corrupted file, do you have more of an underlying problem - ie - imminent hard disk failure?

could easily download and run a disk stressing tool and find out. there are many free bootable ones out there that run outside of windows if you're worried that disk failure might be on the cards.

That's why I dislike SMART technology. It silently allows your hard drive to fail until it is unusable. Only then do you know there is a problem. SMART my arse. The whole point of it was to alert users, not silently copy data from failing sectors to good sectors until everything goes pete tong.
