For arguments sake, try an IDE drive.

I've heard of loads of problems with SATA optical drives

When I installed vista on a system with SATA Spinpoints it wouldn't recognise the drives to install. I installed a very basic XP build and then installed Vista without any problems.

Remove all RAM and start with minimum of 512 mb if you have that sized stick.Just so you can try another install?

Did you run the compatability wizard?

Boot from Vista DVD and choose command prompt.

Command line is format d: /q /fs:ntfs
