I'm an EX-smoker but I would still say I'm 'addicted and weak-willed' the temptation never leaves you fully. :)

well i am no longer a smoker[gave up 15 years ago] i think this is a terrible idea ,this government just seems to want to take away our freedom to choose,i dont smoke because i dont want to ,but i have no objections to any one else smoking [as long as i'm not eating at the time] however i do like a few bottles of papas little helper of an evening, and that is probably next on the agenda, unless we have a change of government at the next election. i could allways revert to making my own[booz that is ] but sadly thats a non starter for smokers[unless your smoking something other than baccy] thats worst case btw if theres a future total ban

I think, that I will be taking cigarette cruises to purchase my supply. As we are a member of the EU I am entitled to purchase as much as I like providing I can prove it is not for re-sale and that duty has been paid in an EU country.

Perhaps the idea of a rolling ban would go down better?

It's 18 now for buying ciggies - move that to 19 next year and 20 they year after....... That way although it'll take a long time to ban completely it'll get done eventually with little effect on those already smoking.

You would need to enforce some form of ID check on those that do smoke but I don't see what that can't be Passport, Driving Licence or other ID that we already have.

After a fortnight in France, I brought back EXACTLY the maximum ammount of tobacco allowed... and myself, my diabetic wife, and handicapped twins were prevented from leaving the port until I had successfully proved to the satisfaction of customs officers that the tobacco was for my own use and not for resale.

Over 3 hours of interrogation, form-filling, digging into my finances, etc... no food or water available even after requesting several times... I was just informed that they could keep us there as long as it took, or until I decided NOT to import the tobacco.

Written complaints were ignored..... arrogant ******s.... :mad:

It appears we're only in the EU for what HMG wants to get out of it... and stuff the citizens' rights....

Well nidge the figure for how much revenue the government gets from tobacco is 9 billion not 1.5. This is tramplling on people's rights pure and simple can anyone show me proof that smoker's are a threat to society in the way drunks or drug (illegal) addicts are. I am the same person after 20 cigs that i was on 1 the same cannot be said for alcohol or illegal drugs. This is just the start bear in mind we have mp's that want to ban angling to prevent suffering to fish and a whole host of other activities. If they get away with the persecution of smoker's many other groups will follow be in no doubt about that.

Having previously worked alongside HMRC, I know that they have "quotas" to fill, albeit "secret quotas", and they often target older people, handicapped people, or persons travelling with handicapped people as these are perceived as traffickers seeking extra income.

HMRC tactics would probably not be tolerated in any other country of the world, let alone just with our EU neighbours.

They are getting away with it, and have been for years.

I Don't smoke but I still think its a ridiculous idea! Why can't the government just leave people alone and let them do as they want. The UK is fast becoming a land of regulation and taxation of everything!

We get taxed on everything we buy...we even pay VAT on the admin charges to get passports which would get us out of this god awful place!

If I could I'd move far away from here...

Why can't you move?

I wonder which government department will be responsible for the conception and running of this proposed bit of bureaucracy then and who's going to pay for it. Oh hang on, a copious supply of tenners should cover it all I'm sure.

Interesting idea eh, clearly someone had a blank space to fill on their annual appraisal.

Lunatics, asylum etc.

I see it as a way to 'register' smokers to exclude them from NHS services or reduce certain access to treatment .................. but mebbe that's just me :D

and I smoke.

It sounds like you are a smoker, so what are you going to do about it?

I imagine this will be too subtle for you, but here goes:

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn't a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.
