Thats the trouble with many aspects of Linux it seems......people spend only 5 minutes trying something out before writing it off as useless or unstable;)

Of course though, most of the compiz-fusion plugins are nothing but fancy bells & pointless whistles there are actually some very useful plugins too but you have to spend a wee bit longer than 5 min`s discovering them,as well as all their best settings.
We`ve had compiz around in it`s various guises since last August on numerous pc`s and never had any real problems with stabilty.Had issues with Emerald in Gutsy at first(3 months ago) but never really CF itself.

sorting out the compiz settings.etc one of those things that I've put on the old to-do list, Problem is other things keep making their way onto the list above it ;)

lol...........Now that sounds familiar.
Nothings ever at the top of the "to-do" list for long eh,before getting forgotton about in place of some new enigma;)

Try Enlightenment Window manager btw,you might like that more;)

Dunno I find the KDE layout suits me quite well being mainly a windows user in the past.

I quite like 1 task bar With the menu.etc on particularly as my monitor is 1440x900 wide-screen.

Tried enlightenment once before and wasn't that keen probably didn't take the time to configure it. Its one of those "I've got it working in a way that I like it"situations and I loathe to change anything at this particular moment apart from the odd aptitude install command when I find I'm missing something (No gimp on the default kubuntu install for instance :Yikes:)

Edit:
Does anyone know how to bind winkey D to minimise everything?
I used xbindkeys to make winkey + L lock the pc
I could probably do the same for minimise all if there was a command I could execute to do it.

Other thing does anyone know of a way to monitor a logitech wireless keyboard/mouse with linux?
I.e a program that can check the battery charge level.

How? as far as im aware emerald doesnt work in gutsy yet?

Least thats what i was made to believe on ubuntuforums lol.

Emerald caused a few slow issues for me in feisty, not that bothered though, quite happy with gtk2/metacity to be honest :)

And cant wait to see where CF Is in 5 years.

M$ might play catch up in oh about 15 years :p:

You can install emerald itself just fine from synaptic but as you`ll see theres no emerald themes in there but...If you go here though, you can quite easily install a deb, which should work fine.:)

Re: Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon Released Today

I got emerald almost working in kbuntu 7.10 now :p:

I say almost becase for some reason The desktop selector thing in the kicker shows twice the number of virtual desktops than I have..

i.e if i have 2 it will show 4, even more oddly 3 is a clone of 1 and 4 is a clone of 2

Other thing I couldn't get working is the cube it doesn't seem to want to show it.

P.s if you manually start compiz you have to add a parameter to the command otherwise it won't acknowledge the setting from the settings app (and being on my laptop atm I can't remember what its called)

Really not too sure about kubuntu....it`s been soo long;)
I know on a default 7.10 gnome install you have to go change to the desktop cube and set the desktop size to the 4.The default in Gnome is the Wall Plugin with only 2 desktops.

I can manually start compiz using ALT-f2 with just "compiz --replace" and it`s starting emerald too

Theres something between teh compiz and the --replace that then tells it to load the config settings from the settings manager thingy (for which I cannot remember the name it shows in the settings menu as "advanced desktop settings" it starts with c i think.

The only thing i ever have between teh compiz and the --replace is a space;)
I`ve generally just left the default settings in gutsy though which has compiz starting by default,as long as your drivers are installed of course.

"advanced desktop setting" is just the Compizconfig-settings manager(ccsm)

"compiz ccsm --replace" i think it is either that or compiz --replace ccsm

Never known that one.
IF you do use ccsm then use it to make changes then close it.
If you have to start/restart compiz any settings made in ccsm will be saved anyway, without having to start ccsm everytime you start compiz.
If i understand you right:erm:

Tried to get compiz-fusion working on Kubuntu Gutsy, but I gave up. Tried Ubuntu and went pretty smoothly. A bit of a shame as I like KDE.

Now just to spend another 3 weeks configuring and learning the keys/mouse gestures.

It does work (mostly).

If you don't put ccsm in the command compiz just loads its deafult settings instead of the ones set by ccsm it doens't actually start ccsm or anything.

Only problem I have now is cube not working but i think i need to change the number of virtual desktops

@gavin you need compiz, compiz-plugins, emerald packages and it *should* work providing you have the appropriate graphics driver.

I may have missed a package but i'm not sure.

I can post the KDE autostart file I use to start compiz if you want... I got it from a forum.

you can use k-window-decorator instead of emerald but i find it to be a tad unstable and tends to crash if you logout/login or sometimes not start...

i couldn't even get xgl or my card running in accelerated 3d mode (despite enabling the ati drivers) for some reason. There's bugger all support online for it as well. I might persevere with ubuntu, or try again later. I want to try and avoid installing the KDE desktop ontop of gnome as that buggered my last install.

how did you install it last time.

I installed the kubuntu package on ubutnu before without incident.
Although not tried both gnome and kde on the present version.
