It seems that the news of these averted explosions are quite serious, i.e. Al Queda linked, thank goodness they were averted.

No link as yet............just heard the accusation on 5 live, it could be tenuous, but then again it might not.

News of this is still being reported, make of it what you will.

Ermmm, the ambulance crew saw smoke coming from the first car. Perhaps the 'jobsworth council traffic 'warden'' (your words) dealt with a car that didn't have smoke coming from it, or otherwise cried out 'bomb inside'?

Hope there are not others.

I wonder if these bombs were planned in order to take advantage of a new PM, Hoping to catch the government on the back foot?

Well it is still early days yet and we don't know whether the second car's contents were clearly visible or not. Having said that I think quite a few people wouldn't necessarily associate petrol cans and gas cannisters with potential bombs - most people I've talked to about this don't seem to appreciate the explosive potential of gas cannisters. Although the good news is that many more people will now do just that, it wouldn't be hard for a budding terrorist to cover up the contents of any such vehicle or just use something like a van.

It'll be interesting to find out why these devices didn't go off - was it a technical problem of did something else happen which prevented them being detonated?

Maybe they were in strategic locations piosed to strike by gaining entry inside the ring of steel in advance for some upcoming event, hence why they had not gone off yet, certainly looks like coincidental locations to Picadilly and Trafalgar Square and perhaps something marching in between those two locations. Mercedes were probably used so they didn't look so out of place.

Me, for one. How explosive is something highly visible that isn't actually a bomb with a limited air supply, exactly.

File under 'Not Scary', please.

Good for you BBKing no doubt you'll be volunteering your expert services to the bomb disposal people then so they can spend their time dealing with real threats.

Umm. 2 cars packed with gas and petrol and stacks of nails, one each end of a march to cause maximum carnage each end and send both ends of the march in a panic towards each other, not scary ? I guess not if your one of the drivers as your likely to be the first dead if it does actually go off as expected. It also now appears this and the glasgow attack are very much linked. The threads should perhaps be merged and retitled appropriatly.

What you have to remember is:

Car with petrol, nails, gas canisters, vapour parked by the side of the road = scary

Car with petrol, nails, gas canisters, vapour parked by the side of the road but informed after investigation that it wouldn't have exploded = not scary
