Re: Im not racist, but....
I titled the thread that becaue, if I had just said I didn't want to speak to call centres in India becaue I couldn't understand them and vice versa, you have responded by saying I was racist.

Re: Im not racist, but....
I think most people have missed the point. it is certainly NOT a skin colour or race thing.
It is a culture thing. A UK call centre manned 100% by British born Indians would not be a problem. It is the fact that these Indian call centres are manned by people who have not set foot out of their own town and have a VERY rudimentary knowledge of our country and our ways that cause the problems. We have to explain every little detail to them where as an English born person (be they of Indian, Chinese, Jamaican, Polish, German or whatever parentage) who's lived here all their lives would know what we meant without trying to explain. But on a language point, who teaches them? I'm sure they are taught by other Indians who speak English. It's like Chinese whispers. One teaches another then he teaches another. Eventually the language gets corrupted and it's like trying to understand a bad speech synthesizer. Yes they might be trained the same as UK based CS people but what about the 20+ years in the field training, eating bacon sandwiches and holidaying in Bognor and fighting at football matches. That is as necessary at the tech stuff. Without that they are just robots. |

Re: Im not racist, but....
I agree that being able to communicate verbally is a basic requirement for a call centre operator but criticising someone for poor verbal English is a bit rich when some of the written English in the forum is so poor.
I know it's considered impolite to point out poor grammar or spelling in a forum environment and typos, informal style and quick posts aren't an issue but those in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. If they must then it would be worth using the spell checker - although that wouldn't pick up their/there type errors. Just being too picky, probably! ;) Must get a life! |
