Re: Firefox Extensions

I had that flashblock well over a year ago and I found it more annoying than all the adverts.

It may block the adverts, but it takes the point of view that all flash is evil, so it blocks sites made with flash as well, which can be annoying clicking on all the links, just to see one page.

Re: Firefox Extensions

AdBlock doesn't always seem to want to work with FF1.0.4 (some people have problems, some don't).

Some info here: http://aasted.org/adblock/viewtopic....3a7af47881cd9b

And a fix for if it doesn't install at all (I had the problem & this cured it for me):

it only blocks what you tell it to...great if you know what you want, a bit of a pain if you don't! and downloading someone else's list probably won't be exactly what you want...

So all those frikkin annoying Flash adverts don't even get a chance to start.

Instead of the flash starting you just get a play button centered where the flash app should be - if you then click on it the flash will start - otherwise it wont.

I use it a lot and its great.

You can get it here - http://flashblock.mozdev.org/

I do.

slightly OT: I'm having intermittent problems with Adblock ie it's not working sometimes but it is others. I've D/Led the latest build and uninstall/reinstall but it's not helped. any ideas?

Just make sure you are blocking the right content.
e.g. http://*.ads.adserver.com/* and not just http://img654.ads.adserver.com/banners/someimage.jpg

Yeah I know that.

It's showing up in the extensions screen, the options work, but the Adblock thing doesn't always show in the bottom right of the window, and likewise, the context menu options don't appear. grr

Well it must have changed then, because it worked the other way, it blocked everything then you had to say unblock and then only for that session.

Flashblock is an extension for the Mozilla and Firefox browsers that takes a pessimistic approach to dealing with Macromedia Flash content on a webpage and blocks ALL Flash content from loading. It then leaves a placeholder on the page that allows you to click to view the Flash content.
from here

If you can allow sites you know, that may be good, but if you're surf a lot, to a lot of unknown sites, it's really annoying. So much that I'd rather put up with the adverts.

It's an extension to think about* before you install it.

*Not saying that it's something deep and meaningful ;)

Have you tried what Matt said here?

Silly me, must have missed that. (I blame supporting a **** team and exam stress).

it didn't work pre-1.0.4 though.

oop, me stoopid, i was talking about adblock! revision is doing crazy things to my brain :dunce:

nffc 16-05-2005 22:59

Re: Firefox Extensions

I've tried that. Now I can't get in the extensions thing grr.

nffc 17-05-2005 00:05

Re: Firefox Extensions

that was painful.

I've fixed it, but in the mean time, I'd ****ed the extensions, themes and the browsing on 4 browsers. Don't ask me how.

Wiped all the extensions, and themes, reinstalled the ones I could find, and it's working.

Does anyone know of an extension which will allow me to open more than one homepage when I open FF or is there already an option for this?

nffc 16-06-2005 23:01

Re: Firefox Extensions

Yeah... it's built in but I can't remember how it's done :(

other than a tab for each one, no, sorry ;)

Richard M 16-06-2005 23:07

Re: Firefox Extensions

All you do is open the tabs you want, go to Tools>Options then click the "Use Current Pages" button.
Or you can type them in yourself and use the | pipe character to separate them.

Thanks for that. The help mentioned that you could do it, not how. :)

Gareth 16-06-2005 23:17

Re: Firefox Extensions

Yeah, I use the pipe option... works a treat. The only annoyance is that if you press Alt + Enter to go to homepage, it opens the homepage on your current tab, but also opens new tabs. I keep on doing it by mistake and end up with loads of tabs open by accident.
