Hi

ntl webspace does not support the Frontpage Server Extensions

there is some more info in this link

http://www.microsoftfrontpage.com/co.../nofp_ext.html

- however, if your site works without needing 'server side' functions, you should be ok. - I'm not familiar with Frontpage, but I wouldn't be surprised if there is a facility for it to handle the upload of your site via FTP.

- good luck :)

np - ntl webspace is fine for 'flat' html sites, but for anything else you will need to look at 'proper' hosting, which unfortunately needs to be paid for. It's not that expensive, though - a 'co.uk' & basic hosting using I-Web's special offer to CF members can be less than £15 per year. :)

I've only got a basic one-page website :D that I want to put on the net, but hopefully in the future I will make a better website, and take advantage of the offer you've just posted, and pay for a better service, hopefully with FPSE. (Front Page Server Extensions)

However, all I want at the moment is to get this basic website(page) ;) uploaded to my free ntl webspace.

Just one question though, you know when they give you the free Web Space and it's something like http://homepage.ntlworld.com/firstname.secondname is there anyway you can change it's URL so that it's not showing your personal name details???

And when I do got to my personal Web Space web page it's says

I think you can have it changed by phoning Tech Support. AFAIK, you'd have to create a new ntlworld email address, & ask Tech Support to change your webspace to use that instead of your current main account name.

It's something people should be more aware of - that their name will appear in the URL. I don't think NTL warn people though :erm: I very rarely use my name on the web - it's always dwarfinleopardskin. If I want an email address that's my name, I can always create a secondary account in email options.

The webspace directory is the same as the username you chose when you regestered your internet connection, it will also be the bit before your @ntlworld.com email address.

eg, myne is
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/hellochris00/
and hellochris00@ntlworld.com.

you can just copy and paste as you say and it should work.
you can also upload with frontpage to the same ftp address, in frontpage,
open your web in frontpage, click file - publish website and input the ftp address into the where box then just enter your password when prompted.
hope this make sense, if not I will have another go at explaining it later.

I tried to upload using the ftp address NTL gave me (ftp://firstname.secondname@upload.ntlworld.com/docs/ when I first signed up with them but when it did ask me for Name and Password it came back with;

Unable to open ftp://etc...etc...
1. The web server may not have FrontPage Server Extensions installed.
2. The web server may be temporarily out of service.
3 If you are connecting through a proxy server, the proxy settings may be incorrect.
4. An error may have occured in the web server.

try it this way
ftp://username@upload.ntlworld.com (notice no docs on the end)
also username is the first original username ntl gave you it's the same as the begining of your original email address changed or second address's don't work.
when prompted enter your original password, if this does not work let us know at which stage it generated an error.

Hi im also having some problems connecting. it gets as far as password and then drops connection every time i try to connect.

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

sometimes when you change a password from the one generated by ntl - it changes - but leaves the webspace one the same in SABS (subscriber and billing database system)

this is often overlooked

Re: NTL webspace..let me in!!

Okay I finally got my website to work, using a ftp client - but as previously mentioned I'm not too happy about being directed to a webspace homepage that ends in my firstname.secondname. I've got nothing to hide, but, would you don't your personal details up there for the world to see.

I did phone Technical Support and they initially did try to change my NTL Webspace free homepage to something of my choosing, but it didn't work. In the end he gave up and said it didn't look like it was possible.

So it looks like http://www.i-websolutions.co.uk/cfhosting.php is the next step for me. ;)
I dont' mind paying £10 or so a year, and you seem to get much, much more with that package. Can you choose a domain name of your choice though, with i-websolutions?
