Re: Promote your own website

I am building this website for my college course and would like some constructive critisum... It was built using notepad today.
limo2carriage

I would also like your views on the domain name I have used limo2carriage others I had shortlisted were:
Limo4hire, Specialy4you, 4specialtimes, 4thebigday, urcarriage, and limo2carriage. (Limo4hire.co.uk wasn't available) I went with limo2carriage.co.uk

I will continue to add the pages but might have to move it to ntls webspace if it looks like its going over my limit.

Good work Kitty. :)

How about showing the carriage as it would appear on the day.... with the horses as well. :)

Re: Promote your own website

Hmm, OK, here goes....

MOD EDIT (Tez): Link removed as doesn't exist anymore

The main thing it has so far is my digicam photo gallery, plus there's a few other bits.

Still needs a lot of work, plus it would help if I actually knew anything about web design, LOL.

Also may not be accessible to everyone yet, as NTL's DNS servers don't always seem too happy with it (yet other DNS servers have no problem...Turn3 say they are going to talk with NTL about that though)

MOD EDIT (Tez): OK, I've taken that link out as the site no longer exists there. I have now changed hosts from T3 to I-Web ( ;) :) ), plus got a new domain name, & am currently sorting the site out..."coming soon"

Agh. Bloody NTL. AFAIK it works fine using any DNS other than theirs (I'm currently using easynet's DNS). I'll have to harrass them again.

Same here....

http://www.stusplace.co.uk
It was off-line for months after a mix up with domain transfer, I finaly got it all resolved last night and have started re-building.
Official launch is April 1st (couldn't resist!) and it will be a site dedicated to map making for on-line games.

I am starting off with Battlefield 1942 as I have already made some maps for this & so have a few of my friends. (this includes the Desert Combat mod) I am also including Battlefield Vietnam and Far Cry as these are both new games & come with map editors.

WNA... there should be no adverts with an invisionboard mate.
I've just had a quick look-see at your site & you have a great big banner add slapped in your forum.

If this was part of a deal for you to have IPB set up for you, cool.
If not, are you sure you have to have the ad?

http://www.stusplace.co.uk has an IPB forum with *NO* adds whatsoever.

8M?????

OH MY GOD!

Thass the shouting out the way ;)
Do you want me to have a chat with my host?
I get 1Gig of webspace, 5Gig per month bandwidth with:
10 subdomains
10 parked domains
10 FTP accounts
50 e-mail accounts
10 MySQL databases
10 Postgresql databases
Unlimited e-mail forearding
Unlimited e-mail autoresponders
All running on a nice FAST server using Linux with PHP, FrontPage extensions, Pearl, Apache etc. all with a lovely control panel which includes Fantastico!

All that for £50PA!

Admitedly, I go it on a special deal with one of my mates (who happens to be an independant ISP) but I could have a word & see what I can get you ;)

Hello everyone....I introduced my self in the Introductions bit, and here I am, bravely showing off my site(s), or should that be showing myself up....I keep meaning to amalgamate them all on my NTL webspace, one day soon, eh!
My main site was started a couple of years back, to display a bunch of E-Cards I made, and I keep updating it regularly with seasonal stuff, at the moment Easter of course. Mostly kewtsey stuff, some humour as well:
http://www.geocities.com/gigiuk69
I put some of my digital photography on this site, they are all local pix from Manchester from the past year or so:
http://www.geocities.com/fabmanchester
Finally, a site for a few of my stoopid animations and jokes, dancing kittens and such:
http://groups.msn.com/fishchipskittens
Have a look in sometime if you're bored, sign my guestbook if you like anything you see!

Well, I get:
10 subdomains
10 parked domains
10 FTP accounts
50 e-mail accounts
10 MySQL databases
10 Postgresql databases
Unlimited e-mail forearding
Unlimited e-mail autoresponders
SSH access (Linux box)

for my £50PA, of which I use:
7 subdomains
5 parked domains
8 FTP accounts
22 e-mail accounts
4 MySQL DB's
0 Postgresql DB's
6 mail forwarders
4 autoresponders
I also use 2 dedicated mailing lists (using 'mailman')
I'm currently using just over 800M of my space and have already gone through just over a gig of bandwidth this month, so after a brief chat, I am upgrading to 10G webspace with 30G bandwidth...
Getting this for 1 month free, then a total of £65 PA.

If you can beat it, quote me happy :D

(I allready have my domains with 123reg so can re-point to any nameserver ;) )

[EDIT] Whilst I'm at it...

I pay £300per quater (can get £875 per year) for a dedicated Linux server...
P4 2.5G
1G RAM
RedHat distro
Currently running 'Battlefield Vietnam' 20 player server, 'Battlefield 1942' 20 player server and 40 channel TeamSpeak server.
It is on a 100M link and it chews up about 60 - 100G bandwidth per month.

Can you beat it? (admitedly, it's nowt like webhosting, but thought I'd ask ;) )

I would have to know what it is you do with your space, as thats alot of space for a website  But i would probably put you on a reseller package (like many people here) that have a number of sites.

Not much there at the moment apart from my photo galleries.

Still needs a lot of work, & I still need to think of other things to do with it.

But, well, I'm busy, and lame, and have no web design skills or training, so it could be a long process.

I signed up too :) Lol, I have a forum as well... and its like getting blood out of a stone to actually make people sign up and talk! My experience with websites, forums, etc. is that you have to spend 99% of your time promoting your project like a maniac... and then, once it becomes successful, cut out most of what you made because it all gets too cluttered!

I wish you the best of luck, because I totally know what it feels like to have made something, spent lots of time on it, and then find no one wants to join in ! :ghugs:

I think another problem as well is getting newbies involved in message boards.. most people have no clue what to do, but, to people like us, its second nature to sign up to a board and start posting. I've started making a really in depth tutorial for my board.. but it's really dull to write, becuase, to me, its too simple. To others, though, the information will be a really steep learning curve.

Re: Promote your own website

Hi Wayne.

I know you've been trying to encourage new members for a while, and again, I don't want to be negative but there's no point having a forum just for the sake of wanting to admin one, especially when the content and themes are so similar to this site.

As I suggested before, it's incredibly rare to be able to create a successful forum simply on the basis of it's own existence. You need to have a unique theme or content for your website which people actually want to see, then use the forum as an extension of that. If you give people a reason to come to your forum, and give them something to discuss there with likeminded people then you will have more success.

I admire your perseverance, Wayne, but the problem as I see it is this:

If you promote your forums at an existing forum (such as CF) which already has an established userbase & has very similar (& very active) forums to the ones you have created, then I can't see how you would really hope to gain many new members.

When people, while browsing a forum they regularly use (e.g. CF) see your forum link & visit it, and see that it has similar (but unused) forums, I'd think that most would be unlikely to sign-up & use your forum too - as they can already discuss Current Affairs, Computers, Games & so on here (for example).

If that makes any sense...

As Alan said, attracting members to a forum can be very difficult.

You need a reason for people to join, something different to here & other places.

I suppose there's also a "vicious circle" type thing with forums...people don't like to join & post in empty forums, yet if people don't join & don't post then the forums stay empty...(you need members for there to be activity, but you need activity for there to be members)

It's quite hard, & I understand the problem myself.

Like Alan said, have you thought about actually having a proper website, with the forums as an extension of it? (I know you were thinking before about signing up with I-Web).

Can you perhaps get your friends to join your forum, & use it, so that it "gets the ball rolling" & makes it more active?

[plug=on]I haven't plugged my websites for a while :D
Circuit Swamp
Nebula Board
Farnborough & District Radio Society

Recently added to circuit swamp is a version of FreeExtractor with modifications to install apps to Pocket PCs. I also fixed most of the bugs in the original. Still available is my Java phone game Tilt & a circuit for my version of the Pixie tranceiver.

Nothing new on Nebulaboard. Am improved version with easier customisation is on the cards, but I'm too busy at the moment.

The Farnborough Radio Club website is up to date. I was quite pleased with the way my photos of the visit to Farnborough Air Sciences Trust came out.

Here's mine.

http://www.bowlandcentral.com/forum/
Popular forum we've been building for two years now (Our birthday is the 19th May!).

Launched as an alternative to a larger forum run by a major ISP (not ntl!), after they killed their community with excessive moderation, we struck a chord with some peopl and have grown ever since.

Registration needed to view posts, but hotmail/yahoo addresses are accepted for those who wish to remain anonymous.

It's a mixture of fun & silliness with more serious heated discussion, going very well at the moment, averaging 300 posts a day.

It's bright yellow...if you find that a bit loud, use the colour changer (same place as on here, it's the same board software)

Do you not think that very off putting - I would never sign up to a forum until I had spent time looking around it.

The problem is, when we used to have it that way, all we got was hardly anyone logging in, but load of guests browsing around and never posting.

Sometimes I feel I'd like to make it more 'public', but every time we've tried it, it flops and th site starts to die. I'm sure there are some who get put off registering because they cannot see the site, but it's far outweighed by the increased activity we get in the community by having it 'members only' so to speak. Despite this, we DO get quite a few new registrations.

As a sort of compromise, we did create a portal page which IS open to guests, and displays the most recent threads.

Only finished uploading the site very early this morning. It is certainly better than the free site where the FTP is regularly b*ggered.

http://community.bowlandcentral.com.

Hmm... I had this trouble with http://www.mapediting.co.uk
It's just a forum about editing BF1942 maps.
When I first opened it, I wanted to force registration to build up members, but had no posts!
So, to get posts, I made the board free for all to view/post, then when the posts built up, I changed it to free-to-view, register to post.

Admitedly, I get thousands of 'views' and hardly any posts, but the people who do register end up being valuable members.

I guess it's one of those catch22 situations (as mentioned earlyer) a successfull forum has lots of posts by lots of members, but people don't join empty forums.... so you need to find a way of building up some usefull information to entice viewers, then give them the option to get involved after a free sign up.

It works for my site, because some people just want to know something simple, they can just look it up and go.
Other people who want to learn something, register and start posting.
They make more info available for people in future.

hmm, I wonder about that

Quote:

WHAT YOU MUST DO
You must put some kind of content on your site and the advertising code on your website within 5 days of signing up. (The ad code will be emailed to you.)
You must have at least 7 views average of the advertisements per day on your website after 5 days of signing up. These views can be your own visits if your website is new.(non-unique views). If you fall below this requirement, an email reminder will be sent to you.
it doesn't say what will happen if the 'requirement' continues to fall below the target.

The package provided - 2 Gig of space, 60 Gig of bandwidth, 1000 MySql databases, etc, is disproportionate for a 'free' hosting service & I am guessing they expect income from the advertising to offset that.

I don't think anything will ever curb WNA's boundless enthusiasm, but I hope he hasn't set his hopes too high, with this.

I've already offered you a subdomain and some space for nothing. It was your choice not to take up the offer.

Yes this is correct we do offer this service now for those that do not want to have their own domain name which has all the same benefits as the other hosting packages including cpanel pop email address etc.
when signing up just enter username.i-webhosted.co.uk the main advantage of using this is that the site propagates to internet almost instant.

If you register a .co.uk domain, you can very easily "opt out" of having your details in the WhoIs database.

Then, if anyone did a whois check on your domain, the only detail they would get would be your name.

Or...there's the option Incog uses, as Richard & Web Junkie mention above.

WNA, when I set up www.battlefieldmaps.co.uk I didn't want to include my personal details.
If you run a whois, it says the owners name is "RoadRunner" and has elected not to have address info displayed ;)

This is simple to do, when you purchase your .co.uk name there should be a tick box for exclusion from the public register. Tick it.

I use 123reg.co.uk for all my domains as they seem to be cheap (9p) and efficient.

Having thought about it, if I give you a subdomain off of one of my domains I wouldn't be able to offer you access to MySQL, I couldn't (and wouldn't) let you have my level of access to the databases on any of my domain names, too risky. You're still better off paying a pound a month to i-web.
