Nothing. Customers with 2Mb Broadband accounts will automatically receive 4Mb by the end of June. You will notice your speed is twice as fast. This will show on your ntl bill by the end of June.

Thanks MB, I didn't remember that one :dozey:

Is this upgrade to 4mb due to the money they will save when they axe those 6,000 jobs?

no, speed increases during 2006 were originally promised around August 2005 - so it's part of the long term plans.

No it's stuff like offering 10Mbit for £12.99/month that's using the money they're saving with the outsourcing and job cuts. Assholes if they actually spent a few quid on improving service rather than just cutting prices they'd probably get better results in the form of a lot of happy customers sticking with them. Of course that takes skill, hard work and some modicum of giving a toss about your customer rather than just looking at the numbers which seems to be all ntl has been capable of as a company for years.

Hey looking on the bright side they'll have even less to worry about once they've outsourced, they'll just get a nice spreadsheet of average wait time for calls, call handling time, hey ignore that for example 95% of the calls the customer didn't get a first time resolution, that's not on the spreadsheet so who cares, eh?

Outsourcing is the hiding place of pathetic companies that don't want to be responsible for the experience that their customers have, and I'm damn proud to work for a company, an ISP at that, that has no outsourcing and all British customer services and technical support. We may not be perfect but at least we take responsibility for our customers from the huge business right down to the single residential customer paying a few quid a month.

It's not unknown for me to fire an email to a chap in tech support informing him of something as I've read something in a forum and needed to correct him, getting a grateful response and knowing that he's now a more informed member of staff and if asked that question again he'll be fine. He knows that if he needs to know things he can speak to me and I'll help where I can.

That's the advantage of inhouse service. Customer satisfaction is increased as the entire company from the people answering the phones for 10k a year right through to the more senior engineers on 40k a year feel a responsibility to their customers, as there's a direct line through the company linking them all.

Outsourcing REALLY blows in my opinion, a cowardly way out for companies that don't care about their customers and just want to get them off the phone as cheaply as possible.

absolutely, our 'Customer Care' people sometimes get technical queries they can't answer, but they know they can contact our team & get the info they need. "I'll look into that for you sir, and phone you back" - then they make sure they do phone back, once we have done our bit ;) It isn't rocket science :)

From 1 June, ntl customers taking the cable companyââ‚à ‚¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢s 2Mb service will receive a free bandwidth boost to up to 4Mbp/s, at the same price of £24.99 a month. The upgrades will be carried out on a rolling basis throughout June.

ntl will also remove the 75GB usage allowance from its up to 10Mb service, meaning the 1Mb, 4Mb and 10Mb broadband tiers will all offer the freedom of uncapped surfing. All services will also continue to include the ntl Netguard PC security package.

Chad Raube, director of internet services at ntl Telewest, said: †œWeâÃÆ ’¢â€šÂ¬Ã¢â€Š¾Ã‚¢ve got a solid track record of giving customers more for their money and these broadband upgrades are the latest example of how weâ₠¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢ll continue to add value.ââ‚Ãâ €šÂ¬Ãƒâ€šÃ‚

Consumers can find out more about ntlââ‚Âà ‚¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚¢s bundle of digital TV, broadband internet and telephone services at www.ntl.com/home.
Notes to Editors
On 3 March 2006, ntl Incorporated completed a merger with Telewest Global, Inc. creating the UK's largest provider of residential broadband and the UK's leading provider of triple play services. The company operates under the name of ntl Incorporated.

ntl offers a wide range of communications and entertainment services to more than 5 million residential customers. ntl's networks can service more than 12 million homes - 50% of UK households - and 85% of UK businesses.

These broadband service changes will effect ntl customers, not households currently receiving Telewest services.

Steam usually can't count, but who knows, do NTL actually show when upgrades are complete? And why not check the modems config to see if you are actually on 4Mb ?

funny thing is ,when i re-joined in nov, the modem was set for 2mbit/256kps, but now its droped to 2mbit/200kps,
since my lad has been starting his game servers for a few weeks now, i miss that extra 56k at these times.

i suppose marketing did that so they can say double the upload rate, but i think its wrong of them to do that, even if we only have a few weeks until we get the better upload rates.

Of course not but the moderators here don't work for ntl and are not responsible for any issues you may have with ntl.

This board is here for all customers, and is divided into topics for ease of use. It would get extremely messy if people posted in several totally unrelated threads. This one is dealing with the speed upgrades on June 1st.

This is because if they do that people on 2Mbps will downgrade to stay at the same speed they've been at for the last 12 months (ish) at a lower price.

It definitely does matter. Whilst you are right in that it's no bother really, no one's lives will be affected adversly and no one should get all angry about it. A big company like NTL shouldn't release specific dates if they can't stick to them. It's deffinitely not professional and obviously doesn't breed confidence in customers that they are with a company that knows what they are doing.

Florence 19-05-2006 08:11

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

The only specific date I had officially from NTL was they were starting to upgrade the 2mb customers to 4mb during June and it wouod be completed by the end of June. They are rolling it out area at a time.

Personally with what my connection is like in the evening this upgrade is useles as most nights I am on 512 to 600k until after midnight so what is 4mb going to do to the network. Its already under strain and tech support in India say its my computer. The connectionis fine by day slows after 7pm and is ok again after 12pm ish.

I would rather they stopped all the crap and sorted out the network soit works as before where regardless of time the speed was steady.

the gap between the first area and last area of rollout should be under 4 weeks, if any longer and I was in a late area I would ask for a discount on the basis another area is getting more for same price.

just my own thoughts.

With all teh changes that NTL are implementing regardless of if they are good for the company the increse in speeds could be bad.

You will need to phone CS because you are using an STB.

1MBit 17.99 (or as it 14.99 now)?
2MBit 24.99

online upgrades aren't available for set top boxes, you will need to call customer services.

The pace box should handle 2meg ok, but you may want to double check it will be ok for the forthcoming increase to 4meg. I think it will be ok, but it is worth checking :)

Just a quick pointer... Pace STBs cannot handle anything higher than 1Mb broadband, so for 2Mb/4Mb you will need to have your Pace STB swapped out to a Samsung STB

I am on the NTL 10Mbps package and this morning I was getting about 9.1Mbps about 11AM ish, but now I am getting the below:

Mon, 22 May 2006 18:02:49 GMT

1st 512K took 2573 ms = 199 KB/sec, approx 1640 Kbps, 1.6 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2274 ms = 225.2 KB/sec, approx 1856 Kbps, 1.81 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2924 ms = 175.1 KB/sec, approx 1443 Kbps, 1.41 Mbps
4th 512K took 2153 ms = 237.8 KB/sec, approx 1959 Kbps, 1.91 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1725 Kbps, 1.68 Mbps

Hi Imran its plan to see Manchester is maxed out and NTL need to spend some money.. OH I forgot they have none now after buying telewest and reducing some customers bills. It happens at peak times an weekends Imran I have 2mb and end up with 516K when its bad.
The best thing is to contact them let them know and keep it logged.

same problem here

Mon, 29 May 2006 21:23:19 UTC

1st 512K took 1702 ms = 300.8 KB/sec, approx 2479 Kbps, 2.42 Mbps
2nd 512K took 4036 ms = 126.9 KB/sec, approx 1046 Kbps, 1.02 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1653 ms = 309.7 KB/sec, approx 2552 Kbps, 2.49 Mbps
4th 512K took 1732 ms = 295.6 KB/sec, approx 2436 Kbps, 2.38 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2128 Kbps, 2.08 Mbps

and I've been getting 1meg speeds mostly - I recon the upgrades to the middle tier have just been applied!!!

Same here, in the North West London area.

Mon, 29 May 2006 21:57:23 UTC

1st 512K took 5656 ms = 90.5 KB/sec, approx 746 Kbps, 0.73 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1969 ms = 260 KB/sec, approx 2142 Kbps, 2.09 Mbps
3rd 512K took 1578 ms = 324.5 KB/sec, approx 2674 Kbps, 2.61 Mbps
4th 512K took 1344 ms = 381 KB/sec, approx 3139 Kbps, 3.07 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2175 Kbps, 2.13 Mbps

Anyway, regarding the posts about prices.

they have 512k @ £14.99 till 30th June and i heard 1Mbps is going up to £18.99 per month? Or am i wrong?

This thread isn't to report problems with your BB connections. It's to discuss the upcoming speed increase from 2mb -> 4mb. There are plenty of other, more appropriate threads already.

Of course if you reckon it's related to the increase then you may have a point but it's difficult to tell IMO. I don't see how any of these problems could be attributed to the speed increase when no one has been upgraded yet.

Anyway I'm not a mod so feel free to ignore me.

I am a mod, and I agree. This thread is starting to wander off topic.

I don't think it's going off-topic at all.

If NTL are not able to give customers even 4Mbps on the 10Mbps package, how are they going to manage 4Mbps on the 4Mbps package?

no price increase, another free upgrade for users.......;)

this is the original topic starter and my point is, you may be given a speed increase on 1st of June but based on my experience of the 10meg service, your highest speed would be probably 3meg with instances where it drops to 1meg. unless of course they're going to rig it so only the 10meg users see huge contention affects.

And they say cable is better than adsl???

You may not get a loss due to distance but you still get a loss all the same!

If they can't manage a stable 2mb on a 2mb package teh 4mb is going to be like BT's ADSLmax all over the place but never hitting the mark :D

Might even make BT's option a better option.

Like I said I drop every evening and at weekends so its traffic on the UBRs not my PC as tech support in India say. There is no use paying all that money to be told its my end when its clearly NTLs.

Now its half term in Manchester lets see what happens during the day.

Cannot wait, TBH i've never had any speed issue's (only NTL120 firmware issue's in the past) and have always been able to maintain the full 3meg, then 10meg than when i downgraded to 2meg unlimited and expect no difference when we go 4meg. I must be one of the lucky few with hardly any-one on my UBR cos i live in a poor area

I know it seems duff the speeds not matching or getting near what they are supposed to, but all isp's NTL included have that general cop out of a lame excuse that the speeds are up to 10 mb or what ever the speed may be.
I will admit this seems wrong that any isp's are able to get away with a huge speed difference but until you get a fair & honest company this will always be the case. In an ideal world a maximum of 10% difference in stated speed & real speed would be acceptable but this would have to be a + & - difference. At least all packages are uncapped with NTL so thats a big plus

I really don't mind not getting 10Mbps, don't get me wrong, i couldn't mind getting 7Mbps but i'm getting 2Mbps and even 512K at times, it just isn't right.

Hopefully ntl: will improve the service for all by the time the upgrades are completed, lets just hope shall we?

Doubt they have enough money to upgrade anything. after all there are the companies they have bought and all those reduced rate customers. When it all adds together it will perhaps stop any upgrades or the Share holders will be getting no dividends.

so you will get new speeds on 1st of june, well new 'official' speed levels but the reality may not be any better than before!

Anyone found out what's happening with the newsgroups yet?

Will NTL provide access to all groups like Telewest do?

it's automatic - sit back and wait for it to happen - you'll know when your area has been upgraded as your speeds will be up and down like I yo-yo I recon!

This has not been announced by ntl at the moment- the only speed upgrade that has been announced at the moment is 2meg to 4meg.

Re: New Speeds - June 1st

I think it's safe to assume that 1meg users will get a speed upgrade, it's just a question of when and how much. I'd speculate it'd be to 2meg and within 3months and also it'd be screwed by contention.

Using the tier migration tool hopefully there will be no need to wait throughout June. :dunce:

don't know if its already been posted but i found this on the service status page:

On the morning of Thursday the 1st of June between midnight and 6 AM,
Network upgrades will result in a loss of service in the Baguley, Stockton, Oxford, Andover, Runcorn, Cambridge and the surrounding areas.

perhaps these will be the first lucky areas to get upgraded speeds. fingers crossed!

I'm not so sure because if you look the same message has been given to other areas in this month and April.
