Hey, that seems to work!

Is there an easier way to set that up, as these "slow browsing" days seem to be becoming more frequent. Perhaps a bit of software that pings various proxies, and lets you choose one that actually works?

no connection to BBC, google, eBay in Woking.
And yes I've tried different proxies. Doesn't help when its a DNS problem.

Which page is it? I'll ping it, get an IP and post back, it might help, it might not..

And can you reach http://www.rvracing.net/poxy ? If so it might be worth trying things through there.

I've sorted it - lent on the F5 key. Put it through the bottom of the keyboard. NTL Management needs thinning out. Preferably with a shotgun.

I'm just about to log off now, but if someone could find these details, and give simple instructions on how to implement, then maybe a moderator could put them as a 'sticky' "What do do when NTL DNS dies" sort of title.

Just my thought for the day.

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

Changing DNS servers.

Direct Connection to the modem Via Ethernet.

1) Open Network Conections, this can be found in the control panel, and sometimes from the start menu itself.
http://www.samputer.com/CF/networkconnections.JPG
2) Right Click the connection you are using (Will most likely be called Local Area Connection 1)
http://www.samputer.com/CF/rightclick.JPG
3) Select Properties
4) Select "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)"
http://www.samputer.com/CF/tcpip.JPG
5) Click Properties
6) In the new window that appears, you may need to select "Use the following DNS server addresses"
http://www.samputer.co.uk/CF/dns.JPG
7) Fill in the fields with the required DNS servers.
8) For the freeserve ones it will look like this
http://www.samputer.co.uk/CF/done.JPG
9) Then Click Ok
10) Click Ok again
11) Next you need to make sure the settings take place, you can either reboot or...
12) Right click on your connection (remember which one we just edited) and select "disable", wait a few seconds and select "enable".
http://www.samputer.co.uk/CF/enable.JPG
13) You should now be all set :D

Hope this helps.
Copy & Paste links i'm afraid, sorry :(

greencreeper 03-06-2006 00:20

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

No need to reboot or disable/enable the LAN connection in XP/2000. If you want, you can do an ipconfig /flushdns to clear the DNS cache. On Windows 98, it's a bit more tricky - need to specify a host, which is the name of your PC.

toytown 03-06-2006 00:21

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

Whats the point in changing DNS servers for web browsing???? Your still being forced through the transparent proxies (which use there own DNS lookups and so are also broke), the best thing is to just try and find a decent public proxy for all http traffic until NTL sort out there mess (again)

Oh ok my mistake m8. Still this ntl dns server problem thats happening is getting really annoying. I for one have google as my homepage and I use ebay alot for selling and buying also my main email address is gmail so as you can amagine when we get these dns issues they are really annoying for me. I heard the first 2 times it was a suspected dos attack and it does sound possible with only certain sites being targeted but I couldn't say for sure.

Come on NTL sort it out will ya were all paying enough money we atleast expect a decent service.

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

Well I don't know if this is the same sort of thing, but it sounds like it.

Just had first month of NTL 1mb (Poole area); speeds are good on d/ls or once a site has started to load, but the response times are often really poor - particularly evenings 6 - 10 pm.

Keep going offline, as well - maybe once or twice an evening for a few minutes a time, but Friday night was dreadful, seemed like every time I tried to get to a site.

The exact same happened to me when I went through broadband medic. He just told me to change proxy and I kept telling him I had and it didn't fix things. He didn't give me another solution just kept repeating the same thing over again.

I told him about it being a problem with the DNS and he said if that was the case no websites would work not just a few and his not aware of there being any DNS problems since the DoS attack a few months ago.

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

Druchii - Is Telewest any better than NTL? I'm looking for something reliable to replace NTLs internet but don't want to have to get a BT line for ADSL.

Also, I changed my DNS servers to Wanadoos ones and then nothing worked, might have been a coincidence though. What DNS servers do people recommend?

Your a bit stuck mate, the only thing you'll get on NTL cable is NTL broadband.

You've never been able to get telewest in an NTL area or vise versa, and now they are the same company, pruducts and services will begin to become identical anyway.

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

Yep - same again here in Stockport, some access to some sites but stuff like eBay and Hotmail flakey.

This is getting stupid. There is obviously a major problem here which NTL are not even telling us anything about each time it occurs other than it is happening.

Heh.. just fiddled with some of my wireless router settings, couldn't get on google or bbc and thought I'd made a boo-boo, but no, it's NTL... surprise surprise.

Stockport, 10mb here

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

I doubt if they would notice a problem if it came up and smacked them in the head, I have had problems for the last 4 weeks, I have 10mb, I may as well have a 56k dial up for what use it is, I have had an engineer out who swapped my modem for a 250 but with all the loss of service I haven't really been able to check if it is working properly, am really struggling to find many sites working, I am in RG1

Bear in mind it now costs you money to do this - a nice little earner in the event of regular weekly faults with the BB backbone!

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

It is a nationwide browsing problem apparently and NTL does not have a clue about the cause...

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

Ahhhhh just in from work... nice cuppa, time to catch up with news on BBC while the kids are watching The Simpsons, and here we go ... normal (S*i*e) service resumed by NTL.

Wonderful.

£24.99 a month for this level of service? Be better off with a cheap dial-up service, or even tight string between two bean cans.

'Suppose I'd better go spend some time with the fruits of my loins for a change!

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

This is probably a stupid question but:

Why doesn't each UBR do DNS too?

brit.bulldog1 06-06-2006 19:20

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

That would be too sensible for NTL, after all we don't exactly get a quality service even when everying is working FINE, I think they only have 2 DNS servers running on an old 286 in the back of someones garden.......:Yikes:

Re: [Merged]-Major connection issues!

I seem to be able to browse webpages ok - but can't connect to Microsoft messenger. I take it it's tied in with the same problems?

I was about to let messenger repair something itself (something to do with a gateway) but I won't let it do anything if its an NTL problem.

Was OK for a few minutes, now gone back to sh*te.

It's about time we got an official apology for the poor service, and explanation of exactly what's gone wrong, exactly what they are doing / have done to fix it and when.

Think you will wait a long time for an apology from NTL to be honest.
They made a mistake with my DB and said they would post me an apology letter ......hence to say i am still waiting for that 3 months later
