I've just had my bill, and didn't expect any discount to show on this one since i only was given my offer last week, but the bill was only £19.44 with all discounts already!:Yikes:

Well Done!

I'll be getting mine in a couple of days so i'll be looking for some sort of discount on it.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Just got off the phone from them, spoke to a really nice guy, he gave me 10MB for £17.49 per month, also offered 1MB for £9.99 and 2MB for £12.50, he said i'd pay this price for 12 months, he also said about the speed increases on the front page.

A huge thank you to people on this forum for helping me get this duscount. :)

DaggaDagga 25-04-2006 18:42

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Well done, I got £17.50 for 10Mb, so you beat me by a penny. I only got it for 3 months though.

Still, can't complain, as I only had it installed 5 months ago :tu: The phone was installed 2 months ago, got that half price too :tu: :tu:

Is anyone still paying full price? If so then call the NTL "free money" hotline

I'm going to try my luck tomorrow following the advice of you good people.

Has anyone managed to get a standalone modem thrown into the deal free of charge when they've been upgraded to 10Mb? At the moment, I'm connected by a Samsung STB on 2Mb, so could only achieve a speed of say 6-7Mb, even if I did manage to get an upgrade from retentions.

Leave it a day or so, then rign up for a modem that supports your speed ? ;)

Are you saying that retentions offered you new offers even though you were still within your original contract? Are these people stupid?

I rang customer relations on 0800 0529403 opt 2 ( as given in an earlier post), told them that I had been looking at other providers Talk Talk and said NTL didn't look competitive, was told that they have a new package to match, BB & free calls for £20.99 with £20 off TV for 6 mths.........will be checking my bills..

Must admit the guy was very helpful and offered the deal immediately

ntl can't win can they? They get critisized 3 seconds after CPW/TT announce their new package for not being able to offer similar. When they do have an offer to match (or IMO beat) CPW/TT, they're branded stupid.

Brilliant. Well done you guys. Top notch.

Well it had to happen didn't it.... My bill just came and guess what?

No change !!

On the phone to them right now, first CS, then Retentions, finally Customer Relations, no change was made to my bill, nice lady on the other end, sorting it all out now, with profuse apologies.

Ok bill readjusted, and deal done.

People, check your bills !!! (and get the name and ext number of the person you speak to).

Why would any company give someone a new offer whilst they were still under contract. It doesn't make sense - the customer surely doesn't/shouldn't have any bargaining power. Also, please dont address me as 'you guys' or the whole thread like we're one person, that was my first post in this thread. OK?

I said 'you guys', referring to all the people that did slate ntl for not offering a similar package. They know who they are (you included). Chill out.

Well, why refer to what other people have said in your response to MY quote as if that is relevent to my argument? Like I said, the fact that people have criticised NTL previously for, according to you, opposing reasons, had nothing to do with what I said and what you, subsequently quoted back.

Also, I didn't even comment on what the package WAS or how good/bad it was compared to other packages/offers, I only brought up the subject of contract.

One more thing, please don't tell me to 'chill out', I'm perfectly calm. I was just replying to your sarcastic post in, what I thought was, an appropriate manner.

I have just rung them and as I am no good at telling porkies I just asked if they had any offers as I have looked and can get the services elsewere cheaper.
I am now getting my BB 1/2 price and also my family pack 1/2 price for 6 months (the reason being in 6 months time they may be able to offer me an even better deal so I am told)

And a second box in my bedroom free while I am with them.

And I didn't have to threaten to leave to leave or tell any porkies at all :)

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

The wife had a go just now but I think she was talking to customer services not retentions.

In any case the guy told her that if we wanted to go to Talk Talk you have to be signed up with BT for three months before you can migrate to Talk Talk.

So using this as a line of reasoning to get onto a better NTL deal seems a no go. :td:

Damn NTL. you're a long standing customer (5 years here) and they just continue to screw you over.

Any suggestions ?

Maybe I really should cancel. :(

Trouble is if I cancel will they give me a grace period to get Sky+ BT installed before they cut me off ? i.e. if I call and cancell tomorrow, will they cut off my TV immediately ? or do I have to schedule Sky and BT install then call on that day to cancell ? I would end up paying for another month right ? i.e. for a month I would have to pay both BT sky and NTL

Try again, just get a different person and either be more assertive, or, simply be cheeky and ask for any deals they can do you.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

When you ring up ask to speak to retentions straight away. When they ask why tell them you are thinking of canceling. They will then put you through to retentions and tell retentions that there are better deals out there and you are thinking of canceling.

:tu: :tu: :tu: There must be a market for someone to sell their services as an "NTL Canceller". £10 flat fee to ring up and get half-price everything.

Just as I and others have said, you do need to specifically ask for retentions. However, you don't then have to give your notice to quit - just say you're thinking about it, coz they're way too expensive. Then the offers will be thrown at you.

Why even bother with Customer Services?

Call retentions direct on 0800 052 9403
If you haven't been with them for atleast 12 months don't bother trying to get an offer.

Is retentions staying on freephone after the change to premium rate support? That would be brilliant, if its 10p/min for support but freephone to cancel your account

By the way, I got half price despite being within my initial contract. I don't know why, but i did. I was with NTL before i moved house, perhaps this makes a difference.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Rang the number above yesterday, & now have:

Family Pack, extra STB, 1Mb BB, line rental, talk unlimited 24, mobile call plan (maybe this is part of U/L 24?), & caller display for £39.74

I could have traded off something to get faster BB, but 1Mb is fine for me. This all should reduce my monthly bill by about £25/£30, depending on how many mobile calls I make, & how much cheaper they are.

No new contract, & no time limit.

All in all, happy :tu:.....for now ;)

Well, limited success. I called the number mentioned earlier and ended up with a woman from "customer relations".

Anyway, despite checking and admitting that I could get a 4mb BB service with Talk Talk, she wasn't budging on giving me a similar deal. But she did give me my Base pack for half price and BB for half price for 6 months.

Better than a poke in the eye I suppose, maybe I'm just unlucky living in an ex-cwc area and got put through to a different call centre.

Well I save £23/month for 6 months I suppose is better than nothing.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Yes it does seem to depend where you are, I just phoned the number as well and ended up with customer relations. Manager 1/2 price BB and 1/2 price family for 6 months, better than a poke in the eye I guess. Suppose I'll be back on the phone in November.

DaggaDagga 28-04-2006 19:15

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

The 2Mb is becoming 4Mb soon. You'll be on 2Mb for a bit, then upgraded. See this website home page for details.

So they didn't lie to you. Customer services aren't in Yorkshire, so they are generally pretty honest.

tucker61 28-04-2006 19:59

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

They did lie, 4mb guaranteed is what he offered me and he told me he had upgraded me at that point. Not 4 mb sometime in the future. Can they guarantee any speed ?? i am not sure but i doubt it,

scrotnig 28-04-2006 20:04

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Well I'm still on 2mb paying £24.99 a month, and I am not ringing threatening to cancel because I have no intention of cancelling. My ntl broadband is completely reliable and completely superb, I don't mind paying full price for it, in fact I'd rather do so rather than encourage corner cutting.

I also have phone and DTV. I would have no real need of TU24 to be honest, but I wouldn't consider cancelling any of my three services, so I won't lie by ringing them and saying I would.

Stupid? Maybe! But unlike many I understand the 'rules' of business. In the long term you get what you pay for. One of the reasons I'd not even consider the Talk Talk deal is that I prefer my supplier to be making some sort of profit out of my business. Long term, you don't get something for nothing.

I'm not advocating paying more than you need to, just saying that nothing in life is truly free.

Good for you. I'm very pleased you're giving charitable contributions to this worthy cause.

I'll go Tesco tomorrow and offer £5 for a loaf of bread, just to be sure that they'll still offer high quality, reliable bread in future.

Think about it - would NTL give you money if they thought you needed it?

Zee 28-04-2006 21:25

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Why would you offer Tesco £5 for bread? They don't charge £5 for bread, but NTL do charge £24.99 for 2MB Broadband, though i see where you're both coming from ...

have you ever stopped and thought that talk talk are still making a profit from offering you broadband and free calls for £21 a month and that ntl / bt might be making massive profits from charging you £40 a month ?

Chrysalis 29-04-2006 05:32

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

They probably do make profits from those who barely use their connection, lets not forget their is a fair few users who probably buy broadband and use it under 5 hours a month, personally I see that as crazy and would use PAYG dialup but people do it and these type of customers are cash cows for isp's.

Not true, CPW anticipates to make a loss until 2008:

Eh?

I really don't care if you do or you don't. My point is nothing to do with caps or network usage.

My point is, I'd rather a business charged a realistic price so that it can afford to properly maintain its networks.

I'm not criticising people who take the special deals for threatening to cancel. Just pointing out that if EVERYONE did that, the company would be forced into a corner and that may lead to problems.

Businesses exist to make money, I don't have a problem with them doing so, within acceptable boundaries.

I don't think that language and/or attitude is really called for mate.

Although your point is good, they are probably taking the extra profits from them instead of you, you could of phrased it a little friendlier ;)

Ah just had to answer this..

Firstly people aren't always threatening to disconnect they're happily throwing these discounts at people.

Second you may understand the 'rules' of business but ntl still don't - they discount without any further contract tie-in, and constantly pay the price for it from people who persistently obtain discounts. What do mobile companies do when you phone to leave? I believe they offer you deals subject to renewing your contract with them, yes?

The margins on ntl's products do suggest that some of these deals would be loss making, however whose problem is that besides ntl's?

If ntl are in a position where they have to discount to retain customers that's no-one's problem besides theirs. If they had the quality of service, the value adds, and the customer service to keep more people happy without having to pimp, beg and discount to hell in an attempt to keep them.

Personally I think they should be offering lower prices anyway if they can afford to offer these discounts to whoever calls up asking about their deals.

You seem to forget that you're a customer, and are set upon acting like a stakeholder in the business. That's really your problem. Personally I'd have no problem seeing them go back through C11 bankruptcy and at the end be bought out by UPC, which is likely with or without the bankruptcy.

the only reasoning that could be behind ntl's policy is they should obtain and keep customers at all cost, even if they not making a profit from them.

Ntl have the market share they are big, they should be concentrating on increasing revenue per consumer but keep stretching themselves out thinner and thinner.

That's the standard new customers' offer. Do you know whether you're under new contract or not? And does it automatically go to £24.99 after that?

Anyway, I've had the £24.99 bb for about 2 years now. I'd like to ring retentions for a new deal. Thing is my threat to cancel would be weakened by the fact that I'm only 9 months into a Phone+TV contract on a seperate Account number.

Basically, if they were smart, they'd realise that I couldn't get another broadband provider to replace my NTL service because I don't have a BT line anymore. And I can't really threaten to ditch the Phone service because I'm under contract for 3 more months.

Obviously this is only if they are smart, I realise people in this thread are reporting new deals whilst still under contract and there is no consistancy at all. I'd like to know whether I can cancel my service without being charged a large lump fee. I like most people here never read the massive document they sent when I first signed up - of course I never even filled it in, so I guess that means I'm not officially contracted to anything...

Any thoughts? I'd like to ring them on Monday.

say u wanna cancel the bband... in my case i was in my bband contract [2 months in i think], and not in contract for tv and phone.... say if they priced matched the talktalk deal then fine or else u wanna cancel bband as of NOW/1 month notice, and will cancel tv and phone as soon as ur out of the 3 remaining months contract....

it would be cheaper to u to get talktalk, since instead of paying £25, u would pay £21, have a SECOND PHONELINE, 8mb broadband, TU24 and FREE INTERNATIONAL CALLS.... so u got nothing to lose :D

You don't have to threaten to cancel, just tell them that they no longer appear to be competitive when compared to Talk Talk.........I found it all to be quite civilised, no threats from either party......just a deal to match Tal Talk, and as they pointed out no need to change phone number or reconnect to BT then wait 3 months before being able to join Talk Talk..

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

I got half price broadband and phone even though:

- I can't get talk talk, as they're not installing into my local exchange.
- I have only had broadband for 7 months.
- I have had the phone for 3 months.
- I'm bloomin miles from the exchange anyway, so I'll get naff all speed from any ADSL ISP.

So who's worrying about them being clever? Just ring em up! They WANT to give you a discount - they probably get a staff bonus for it!

Being 9 months into the contract for phone and TV akes the timing just right for asking for an offer. You have to get a BT phone line and keep it for 3 months before you can transfer it to Talk Talk which means the contracted year is up at the same time as you can move from BT to Talk Talk.

If you haven't signed any contract with NTL you may probably be able to cancel your NTL services without penalty as they have failed to fulfill one of the requirements of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 which governs the Hire Agreement that NTL contracts are based on. Some posters are suggesting that simply using the services implies that you have accepted the contract but this is not the case if you read the relevant Act. There should be a thread on the subject somewhere in the sites archives which goes into the details.

Just phoned to get a package set-up for a 'work from home' member of staff and was quoted a poor £37.49 for TU 24 with 1Mb BB. :(

Any one out there getting a better deal on that?

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Hi guys,

Thought I would join in on the above and give them a call. They were quite eager to offer me additional services.

I am not sure how good my package is but when I priced it up on their website, it came up to ₤67.99. Please note I do not need the 10mb or TU24 so this is what I got:

Family Pack TV
Sky Sports 1,2 & 3
Talk Unlimited - with some International Calling Plan
2mb Unlimited Broadband

Oh yeah, I got them to throw in and install a second STB in my upstairs bedroom.

Total package including the second STB is ₤39.99 a month.

Is this a good deal comparing it to the others?

Let me know what you think.

Thanks.

Woo! I just called this afternoon and from 3 for £33 i.e 1 meg, base TV and TUL I got 2 Meg BB, TU, and Base Pack for £27.50! this is for 12 months BTW.
Not bad considering 2Meg on its own is £24.99!
So now I have £66 more a year. :)

Happy as!

Thought I'd jump on the bandwagon..

Got my 2mb broadband half price for 6 months. I pushed for more but he checked how far I was away from the BT exchange saying that I would probably only get 5mb from BT/Carphone Warehouse.

He also said that come September/October he was expecting everyone to be moved to 10mb but with different useage amounts..etc

well i must be of no value to NTL what so ever, well i contacted them stayed on hold for 1/2 hour , was asked why i was cancelling my services, explained about the talk talk deal, the bloke just said yes good offer and cancelled my services from 18th may (30 days notice). will prob have to ring them back to stop cancelation, well peed off.

have looked into switching, bt have confirmed free reconection but minimum 3 months connection, which might be to much of a pain 3 months with bt before i could then switch to talk talk.

THat was my original post on 18th april, well got more and more peed off as i kept seeing all these other offers that people are recieving.

so rang again today, guy was amazed i was not offered out, he offered me family pack tv, talk unlimited, 2mb broadband, ......40 quid a month....on going. I no its not as good as some of the other offers, but it is less than i was paying and i was only on 1mb.

On 10 mb broadband and talk unlimited - £60 /month.

Just been on to retensions and got price match.

Explained regarding talk talk etc was not nasty and got a good deal compared to the old one - been a customer for 12 years with various packages.

Also explained that last time I cancelled a package (full sky) I was offered a good deal after new service provider was signed up - therefore meaning had to go with new provider for that service.

Worth ringing for those of us in the know - did also mention these forums.

Spoke to customer services (retentions) and managed to go from paying £30 a month for 1mb bb, tu weekends, and base tv to £21 for 2mb bb, tu24 and base pack tv.

Just said that effectively paying £10 for 1mb bb used to be good but not competitive anymore with all the offers out now. surprised to find that the speed had been upgraded by the evening and now getting speed results around 1.9Mbps :D ....So NTL may not be the best broadband around but happy with the price for the service now received and look forward to being upgraded to 'up to' 4mbps in June :drunk: ...Cheers!

You can't really compare what other people on here are being offered. Different areas can offer different deals. You're effectively getting TU24 & Line rental for free with what you've been offered compared to ntl's price list. Is that not good enough?

I do think it is a very good offer especially compared to £24.99 for broadband and £25+ for BT I pay a month but I thought I'd post my results for other people to see.

Maybe I should have left the "any thoughts" bit out!

yes .. one more happy ntl customer ;)
was on the 3 for 30£ since a year (well 11month) average bill around 55£, so rang up (08000529403 option 2).
said i would like to cancel, the lady (all very friendly) said yes .. than asked why, i said about tt offer just being better.
so she said i can price match it.
now i got, 20.99£ 10mbit, tu24 (but no international, she said they couldnt do that (?) but i am not to bothered as i use skype &co for free calls.) so over all happy with the deal as it is the same i would have payed for tt with out the hassel and 2mbit more ;)
had to ring a few times as the 1st lady didnt upgrade me to 10mbit straight away, so need to check if this one did it.
call takes around 20min (in que ..) i did it all over skype, but if ur in a office do it in ur lunch break from a pay phone (should be free 0800), mobile will cost you.
They would have given me base tv as well but i canceled that as i dont need it. over all pleased with the deal.

I was offered free international and local calls when phoning CS, yes CS - just to cancel Disney Cinemagic, he apparantly gave me it due to me being with NTL since 1997.
This however was only for 1 month, only reason I haven't phoned retentions yet is I'm quite happy with my free sky sports and 1mb broadband @ 9.99 which I got quite a while ago. Once that runs out though, I'll be on the phone to retentions.

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Well, I made my call - i think it was worth the time taken.

My old package was 1Mb BB, family pack and 321 dialling, costing about £48 before call charges - totalling between £70-90 each month all-in

I was offered

2MB BB @ 12.50 for 12 months
Free TU24 for 6 months

For a total cost of 43.25 - which I expect to be a saving of about £30+ per month for 6 months (£180)

Not a bad payout for a 30 min call

chocky909 05-05-2006 16:08

Re: NTL offering package to challenge talk talk

Well, the guy halved my bb bill to £12.50 a month for 12 months - no contract. And also extended my TV+Family+Sports with basic phone for 12 months @ £30p/m - no contract. Not particularly impressed with this so will ring back later, to say I've reconsidered my cancellation. I REALLY AM considering getting rid because SKY is the only way to get "Match Choice" interactivity on SKY Sports. Plus I want a decent STB and Sky+ is that. So unless they virtually give me TV for free, I'll be leaving. As long as the 2mb>4mb increase comes on time, I'll be happy. £12.50 for 4mb broadband isn't bad at all.

Lets just wait and see what my bills say first...

I get the impression though that you can ring these guys as many times as you like - as long as you dont agree to new contracts (they dont take contracts seriously anyway). I'm actually eager to have another crack at it now.

What I don't like is having to wait a month to find out whether the price has changed or not. I might just ring standard CS on Monday to confirm the price reduction for the broadband. £12.50 for 4MB unlimited on a 12 month, no contract basis is pretty good for me. Plus it is a good starting point for bargaining later.

I really don't think I'll be keeping the TV for much longer though so I'm loathe to put much effort into getting a better package for that. However they'll get a chance to bribe me to keep the phone before I change back to BT.

I'm still in my initial 28 day period on the triple pack (1Mb, base TV & TU local). So I thought, what've I got to lose? & rang CS.

Explained:

1. A bit annoyed that 1Mb customers weren't getting a speed upgrade as 2Mb were

2. I could get Freeview which I didn't think I could before I signed up

3. Bulldog could put me in a phone line for £1 & I could get up to 8Mb

The nice man Phil offered me an upgrade to 2Mb at half price for 3 months. So I ended up with £27.50 pm instead of £32.99 & a doubling in speed.

Unfortunately he forgot to put the code change through or something (it was 5pm on a Friday!!), so I got no IP address.

Rang CS on Saturday, another nice man called Steve sorted it out straight away & without prompting gave me a one off £8.50 credit.

A bit of a hiccup, but pleased with CS overall.
