So, by the sounds of it, They change one of the two of their IP address of the DNS record to a wrong IP, hence the 50% ish problems?

The question is how long will it take the dum users to figure out how to manually configure alternative dns ips? I suggest trying anything NOT on ntls network to be safe. Try bulldog, bt, lots of nice e.u isps etc.

Tis near me farnborough. Everyone says to keep using differnet proxies and dns. This only fixed google for me (dns) but https sites still do not work. Thats why you cant sign into hotmail.paypal/banking sites/ebay.

I swear the the langley cache3 operates differently in some way to others, it gives me different errors for pages that aren't working, like remote 404 error pages not the one on the computer.

The thing that slightly annoys me is that new broadbrand subbers will have no idea of the national problems unless they can view this forum or even get on line in the first place. How bad is it when somebody (who claims to work for ntl) has to ask users on a forum how widespread the problem is?

And madder - don't accuse users of being dumb if you can't spell the word ;)

Hi people.

Please excuse this newbie but I am also a fellow sufferer (Southampton area) and the proxy server "cache3-lang.server.ntli.net:8080" has worked for me in both IE and Firefox. Can I ask one of you guys a couple of questions please?
1. Can I leave IE set to this for good or will I have to remove it when (if??) NTL get their act together?
2. Does MSN use IE's settings, hence setting the proxy for IE makes MSN work?

Cheers.

Re: NTL Internet access problems - 07 Mar 2006

1 NO but it should be fine for a week or two at least.
2 pass - sorta it does but it also has its own settings than can override it, no doubt someone knows the answer better than me.

Looks like problems have eased or solved now probaly easier to do now as peak time has passed, except in my local area Leicestershire where a local fault is affecting LE1,LE2,LE3,LE4 and LE6 a power failure i believe from engineer contact but he was unsure about the major problems this evening as seems to be more than one problem and possibly may delay overnight work.

Anyone spot the mistake ?????

"Network rebalancing across the country will result in a brief loss of service for all customers.

On the morning of Wednesday the 8th of February between midnight and 6 AM,

Network optimisation will result in a loss of service in the Leeds, Withington, Stoke"

I guess english and proof reading are not required skills at ntl.

I've been having this problem, MSN Messenger was not working and many sites are not loading at all. I used to be happy with NTL, but since October 2005, NTL have gone down hill badly, i'm thinking of moving, but since NTL used to be such a good ISP in the past, i'll give them some time to fix this problem.

I'm in the NW London area

By the way, according to NTL, this proxy may help, i'm using it now and everything seems good

Proxy:62.255.0.5 Port 8080

Try doing actual DNS queries on those servers rather than just pinging them as a guide to performance.

Seems to be working again in NG17. Nice to see they never even bothered to put anything on the status page.
Mind you, if they had, it would have probably read like "If you cannot see this page, we are aware of the problem, but have no idea at present as to how to fix it".
Overall though it was not a problem for too long, fingers crossed, so I say "Well done NTL".

The DNS server was not resolving google as its proper ip address and just giving you the next best thing or sometimes a random ip.

Re: NTL Internet access problems - 07 Mar 2006

I've been unable to access Maplin.co.uk and no images would load in their emails for about the past month. What was strange was that pings and tracert to the site was fine, and all other internet access and web sites where also ok. I contacted Maplin tech support, who has also had other people with similar problems, and suggested that it was a proxy problem with NTL. I found this thread discussing the issue and the page with the NTL proxy list at: http://www.cableforum.co.uk/forum/article.php?a=10 and after I changed the proxy of both the browser & email client, the site now resolves and emails load the images. So my advice is to change your proxy and let NTL know that they've got an issue. Phil.

Hi,

What are the benefits of using a proxy server and which and how do you use?

Are NTL throttling connections?

Thanks

grubbymitts 09-03-2006 05:59

Re: NTL Internet access problems - 07 Mar 2006

proxies can be a temporary fix if your connection is very slow. You select a proxy (see my post on page 8 I think of this thread) - any will do and then go into Internet Options -> Connections -> Lan Settings and tick the box and put the proxy name into the long box and put the number 8080 into the port box then tick apply. Keep changing proxies until you find a good one.

Chrysalis 09-03-2006 15:12

Re: NTL Internet access problems - 07 Mar 2006

only benefit I can see for customer on proxies is they can speed up access to pages far away if they are cached.

the benefit for the isp is they save money on transit costs.

My actual ntl modem seems to stay on... but my belkin router keeps cutting off and needs resetting. Its becoming very annoying , i have the main PC downstairs with the router connected and upstairs i have a laptop with an internal network card by Asus. I recently purchased a Microsoft wireless laser desktop 6000 and its connected to the Notebook as well as an external monitor as the original one is broken. It seems that whenever i start uploading or downloading that the connection resets itself disconnecting me from whatever i am doing and just wrecking everything in general , i was wondering if the wireless desktop could be causing this or whether it was a coinsidence. So thats two problems in one post :o:

I've had the same problems in Newport, South Wales, for a week. Pages very slow to load and occasional email difficulties.

Windows drops its connection and I have to use the repair button on my ethernet card properties box. Linux (on the same PC, dual bootable) keeps the connection up but is just as slow. I don't know whether it "repairs" the connection automatically though.

If a similar thing had happened again last week, what's to say that all requests for websites from ntl servers were being 'sidelined' to avoid a similar situation?

still pee poor sustainable upload speeds here in the LUTON / HITCHIN area (SG5 ***) as you can see from the picture i'm seeding something in Azureus called Kororaa since i'm A64 i'm downloading this version. 30kB/s upload on 10mb :erm: (hah) isn't asking too much. Can we claim a partial refund from ntl for these breaks in service? Are they able to charge for a service that they do not provide?
One or two occasional outages is understandable, but the recent occurances are a step too far. Something has to be done about it.

According to NTL the 10mb Service is "Up to 10Mb" and they cannot assure costumers the full 10 Meg. I know as i have had non stop issues with NTL since january 4th.

I have wrote a letter to the CEO and he has put me in contact with an Executive about the problems to which he has told me they couldnt garuntee the 10 meg service. I recieve speeds of less than 1/2 meg most nights and all i get from NTL is that they are aware and are working on the problem but this has been their same story since January.

no suprises there. this "10mb" NTL have sold customers is a fallacy and nothing short of gross miss-selling. how can they get away with this? well its their cleverly worded T&C that YOU signed. It says that they cannot guarrentee a service and any service that you receive is "down to luck" for want of better words.
I find this "10mb" connection with a 60kB/s peak upload craps out if I cane the upload too much. anything more than 30kB/s and i'm likely to get HTTP timeouts and torrents restarting.

Thats going to happen with any cable connection, its a limit of the technology - try cfosspeed - worked wonders here, full upload and download at the same time.

YMMV
