ok been reading these post for days now, so this morning phoned cs and asked if i could go on trial's. yes no problem but our computers are down ring back at 1pm and it will be done, this i did and got a different person, but same answer yes within 10sec i was upgraded from 3mb to 10mb. did a speed test getting 9mb down and 512 up, on a blue 250. if your polite to cs you got a better chance of getting upgrade, but the way some people moan on here i can see why they don't. by the way i'm in Andover Hants

Actually, I think you'll find many people have been polite and you have just been lucky to speak to a nice CS rep.

Just got through to broardband technical support re the 10 mb upgrade, informed that my samsung stb won't take the new speed and that i need to have a modem.
new modem booked for the 22/11/2005, hope it works!!!!. Also informed by sales that it wont cost anything for the modem.

It does seem odd that ntl said that 3meg customers would be upgraded first (presumably as were paying more) and now here is a bunch of us sitting on 3meg samsung stb's with no upgrade in sight:scratch:
Still, it is a free upgrade so we can't really complain:D

Yeah, they tend to be more reliable - and pretty easy to setup (use Ethernet, of course).

There's also a guide in the 'Articles' section on how to setup without the CD (don't let the setup CD anywhere near your machine!!), but seems to be unavailable at the moment.

So what does having the 10 meg conneciton in terms of price mean. Whats the latest. Would I have more of a cap on my connection bearing in mind I am currently paying £38 quid a month for 3meg.

You'll have 75GB a month - basically, when we're all on 10Mbps, we'll be paying for usage not speed.

I suppose those paying £24.99 might have 50GB a month and those paying £17.99 might have 25GB a month (for example - I haven't a clue what the actual figures will be). :)

So I am assuming that we pay more should we cross the cap ? If thats the case what tier can I go onto which gives me a set payment to NTL

*personal note* why do they have to make this so chuffin confusin.

From what I have read surfing rumourville , if you cross your limit you go onto 512k unlimited for the remainder of your month

It would appear it is dependent on which CS advisor you get through too. I rang one last night who said I would have to wait till Dec. Rang again today and the advisor put me on 10mb straight away.

Checked with a BB Speed Checker and he has definately done it.

We don't know yet - no one knows for sure what will happen when we eventually go over-cap.

Just spoke to a nice scottish bloke on CS and I can't get it at the moment because we're still down as 1.5mb gold at the moment for some strange reason, and as they closed in 5mins I'd have to wait til monday. Nevermind, a few days isn't going to hurt.

hehe those guys at NTL must have me on speed dial

been called three times today regards the failed upgrade, quite funny seeing as i told them their was no hurry.

maby its because i was ment to be a pilot customer... or maby its because the Tech Support guy moaned at the other staff..

anyway...

Call 1, lunch ish

Hi this is Micheal from NTL Customer Support, just calling to check that your connection is working fine on 3mbit and to keep an eye out for the connection going down during the day, if it does dont worry its just maintenence in the area.
Oh ok, thanks for letting me know.

Call 2, about 2pm ish
Hi again its Jane for NTL customer support, Just letting you know that the maintenence has been finished and you can now get the 10meg service.
Oh ok

Call three, about 3.30pm
Hi its Jane from NTL customer support again, just calling to let you know that you wont be able to recive the 10meg service for a few more days, (something about a problem with the UBR being upgraded)
Thats no problem jane, im ok with 3meg untill the networks ready for upgrades.
Thats fine sir have a nice weekend

i dunno if anyone else has had this or if its just me. but its kind of nice being kept abreast of things.

Unless you go over enough to attract attention, nothing will happen atm. Only the real 'abusers' are being put on the 512K service. However, once ntl provide you with the ability to check your usage (trials start next year ;)) then they will start fully imposing the caps. If you go over your allowance then you will have to pay something (probably an upgrade to your service, maybe a per GB charge), failing this then I expect your speed will be chopped until the start of the next month. I would expect this to be in and working (certainly in many areas) by the end of 2006 (to coincide with the final 10M upgrades).

Yeah there was a network issue in my area preventing 10 meg and tech support kept in touch. They also called after it was fixed to make sure everything was ok and that I was happy. That's great service and very much appreciated. :)

Sounds reasonable, Paul is it possible for feedback to be given to ask about on peak and off peak to be treated differently? so allowing more to be downloaded in early morning.

Then my contract would be ending pretty sharpish. :)

But, taking what Paul M has said into account, I don't believe it's yet the time to be making assumptions as to what they'll do - not now, but when monitoring software is available to the consumer.

Hi folks, Ive been following this forum for a few days now with interest, so today phoned NTL to get upgraded. Nice bloke did the business for me and told me to turn off the modem for 15 minutes and it would all be sorted. I have now gone online after several hours and tried a speed test with PC Pitstop ........... gave me a reading of Download 1046 KBS and Upload 466 KBS. Something doesn't seem right. There was another speed test on here but I can't find it ......... nor for some reason on NTL ......... can someone please help. I am in Cardiff and he did explain that it was only a pilot test, but does the fact that I am using a Terayon TJ210 make a difference???:dunce:

The most reliable speed test I have found is Dan Elwill's speed test program (http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/).

You download a small program, run it, and it performs test at various sites.

You are talking about Robin Walker's speedtest - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d...speedtest.html

Works, but with me, I just get ~5mb when I can download up to 10mb. You are on 10mb though, you have got the upload that would signify that.

yes, if you register & pay a small fee it will test upload as well, I find it useful for more 'in depth' analysis of the connection, as opposed to Robin's 'speed only' test - good though it is ;)

I suppose now that everyone is getting 10meg upgrades (except me, lol), then 3meg users are within their rights to download upto 75gigs a month now, well i'm going to anyway cos if i cannot have the 10meg till december yet others can who pay the same amount as me on my 3meg and enjoy their new speeds and higher cap, then i will too on the BandWidth allowance side of things!

It would be nice if whoever posts the service status notices could leave them open and updated as in.

The following work will be taking place during the week commencing Monday 7th November. STARTED

On the morning of Tuesday the 8th of November between midnight and 6 AM,

Network optimisation will result in a loss of service in the Cambridge, Leicester, Cwmbrwla and surrounding areas. COMPLETE.
Service upgrades will result in a loss of service in the Swansea, Bromley, Luton, Guildford, Peterborough, Hersham, Colchester, Watford, Ashford, Brent and surrounding areas. COMPLETE

Systems maintenance to our Broadband Plus Platform will result in a loss of service for the duration.

Network rebalancing across the country will result in a brief loss of service for all customers. COMPLETE
i guess you guys get the picture all the same it would be nice to see whats been done and what hasn't...

True, I was on the phone to the indian call centre tech support for ... hang on this is good ... 1 hour 20 mins!!! Told nothing to do with the NTL 120 modem I have (despite reading here no-one can get over the 650k/sec odd that Im getting). Told to try the connection early in the morning / late at night to see if I can get better speeds!

Gonna call CS again and try to get the modem swapped methinks!

i know Mick (is he a NTL employee??)said not to phone NTL for 10mb upgrades on the 1st post
so any1 working for NTL know when we should start calling for upgrades??
i know there were a few NTL people that frequent this forum
and i know they post here on their own time helping people out (helped me before too)
and i would appreciate(and other members would ) if some1 will answer some questions thats been asked in this thread like
should we or shouldnt we call CS for upgrades??
have NTL made a deadline to upgrade all the 3mb user if so when??
what areas are ready for the upgrades??

i personally wouldnt have mind to wait for upgrades in december
but hearing 2mb user were able to upgrade to 10mb before us
bothers me even though we are paying the same amount per month now
we were paying this amount for some time already
i understand if my area havent been upgraded for the new speeds
but reading some post it doesnt seems like this to some users

We cannot tell you if you can get upgraded or not. As far as we are aware, the upgrade should be available in all areas. However, many areas seem to be holding back on upgrading people at the moment (seemingly random, depending on the CS rep you speak to). Rather than post the question here, just ring ntl and ask to be upgraded. :)

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

::: My Finding so far :::

Ringing CS will 9/10 get the answer of "its not Avail till Dec onwards" - this is regardless if you can get 10mbit or not in your area.

If on the Upgrade (autoreg thing) page it says 10mbit then your are should be able to get it. On a 2mbit service my speeds were pretty constant across the board - soon as I went to 10mbit it can go as low as 512k to 5mbit max on a good day with winds prevailing. The modem I have (SB4100) *Should* be able to cope as it has a 10/100 port but yet it never gets above 4-5mbit.

Once you get this 10mbit the first thing your going to do is Speed test / Download stuff just to see how fast it is. This will settle down eventually to general browsing and downloading what you need. Everybody will be doing this at the moment - so this could account for the Crap speeds.

Do I like the 1-5mbit I have? Well the download is good i suppose but in general use I dont see me downloading 24/7 - so no difference really to when I was on 2mbit. The Upload is MUCH better (200k vs 512K) and worth the price alone I guess.

I guess await till 12th Dec to see if the thing settles down and a new Flash to modem or a new modem, failing that - back to 2mbit i Suppose...

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Just to clarify a few things.

Samsung STB are at the moment not capable of recieving 10mb apparently about 8mb is the fastest, however I am sure I read some where else on this forum that they could be able to go a lot higher! From what I can gather it may be down to the interface between the STB and the UBR that may be preventing the speeds available.

If this is so are there any plans to see if the STB's will have to be replaced or UBR's upgraded to allow stb owners to recieve 10mb.

On the flip side if this doesnt happen are STB owners going to get SACM's to allow faster internet as well as keeping there STB's for TV. Has anyone tried this.

BTW Hi to all. First post i think, tho I have been popping in and out of this forum for some time.

Well i have just phoned NTL a second time, and spoke to different people and they all are saying that the upgrade isn't available until December. It seems consistant from the call centre in India, to various call centres in the UK.

Seems we have to wait until we get a letter/email, or some notification from NTL and then we have to phone up.

Seems also that the news provided on the news section is pretty inaccurate, NTL consistanly saying it isn't available until december or afterwards. There isn't anything on their webby either, is there?

No, you weren't fobbed off. ntl will upgrade all necessary modems. Just have a little patience,as it's a huge logistical operation.

look on the back of your modem - you should see a sticker with a 'mac' address on it - this is the unique ID of your modem linking to your account and your friend will have something similar. that's how it's assigned to your account.

Please dont misunderstand me...

I couldnt care less if it doesnt get upgraded in the next year, ive got 5mb down with 512k up.. Im chuffed.

I also understand that logistically, it is a major operation to undertake.

Something to mull over:

The nTL:100 modems will now become defunct as all of NTL's services are going to 10MB (right)?

Sending a CSR to swapout a modem is an expensive exercise. What about sending out the nTL:250 modems via recorded delivery through the post?

This would be CONSIDERABLY cheaper than sending an engineer.. regarding getting the old modem sent back, include a postage paid box/envelope. Seeing as their defunct modems, if the return rate is low as in people cant be bothered to send them back, so be it.. Can these modems be used for anything else?

Paper weight? Book end? But other than that, no.

Apologies if this has already been covered...

I understand that you can use the tier migration web page to get the 10MB upgrade? I am on 2MB at the moment, if I used this would I be bumped up to a £37.99 p/m package?

etccarmageddon 14-11-2005 12:19

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

yes if you choose the new '10meg' tier ie. the top tier and the only one you should be offered on that tier migration page then you'll be paying £38 a month.

I'm on 10mb in Belfast, and i've seen one other person on here wth it, but we're both only getting 3mb speeds, hopefully the Belfast network will get the upgrade this week, taking us up to 5-10mb, depending on modems.

Any news on whether the Samsungs will be swapped, or is it still hoped they can be made to work at 10meg?

Hi,
I did try reading through all the posts but at around 15 pages my eyes started to bleed :) Could someone please explain to me what tier my connection is as I am a little confused from what ppl have been saying and I am trying to work out when I will be getting the 10mb upgrade. I know it will come when it comes but just out of curiosity really.

When I joined NTL I subscribed to a 512k connection. Now since then my speed increased to 1mb (for free) and then to 3mb (for free). So I am still paying the £24.99 a month but have a 3mb line. Now other ppl have been saying they are paying the £37 (well thirty-something) for their 3mb line. Now seeing as it has been said that the 3mb customers will get the 10mb upgrade first does that mean I am included in that (as my speed is now 3mb) or are they referring to the ppl who bought the 3mb when it first came out (i.e. when i was on the original 512k)?

Thanks for reading and many thanks for replies.

The only people afaik who have got 10mbit, are those who have upgraded to it, or called cs and got it. No automatic upgrades so far.

if you are still paying £24.99 then you should have 2MB not 3MB. perform a speed test to see what speed you actually have.

Has anyone else had any problems with their connection since the upgrades started?

Mine has been rock solid for about 2 years now but since last Tuesday every hour or so the SYNC and RDY lights will go out and it'll sit trying to get a connection for 5-10 minutes before coming back online.

It's a 120 modem connected to a router. Nothing else has changed in the meantime. All connections and wiring has remained as it is.

Just curious if anyone else has had any issues before I break out the stress ball and call tech support.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Hmmm I dunno as the modem itself is losing connection not the router.

I've been playing about and it seems to get worse if the connection is getting hammered. If I try any torrents etc. it'll stop every 5 minutes.
For normal browsing it can last a few hours before dropping out.

Looks like a phonecall to T/S :(

Still I'll be one of the few with an actual problem and not just trying it on to get a shiny new 250 for 10Meg

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

Phoned up cs earlier to ask about switching over to the 10mbps speeds and the lady said we would have to ditch the bb+xbox package(that gives u a second i.p address..) to get the switch over.

So we have ditched the 2nd i.p address and was switched over to the 10mbps speed here..(newark,nottinghamshire..) and the speeds im getting from adsl.co.uk and another speed tester is about 500kbps up.:-)..but the download has only gone upto around 3.5/4mbps but she did say to me on the phone that it could be anywhere(the speed) between 3mbps and 10mbps as its a trial period.

So am i right in presuming that the download speed would be around the 10mbps mark come the automatic switch overs in december?..im thinking thats what will happen hopefully.

Oh btw we have the silver ntl home 200 modem so according to the very top of the thread we should be able to recieve these speeds with this modem.

Re: *ALL* ntl 10MB Discussion (Part 3)

just a question to any1 that knows
with NTL saying its gonna be a upto 10mb connection
what kinda speed should we be expecting to get on average??
been reading that only 5%(?) of ADSL2 users will get the 8mb(?) even though the full speed is 24mb(?)
theoretically should every1 on NTLs network be able get the full 10mb??
not counting the busy UBRs, slower modem/STB etc

does NTLs network have any problems if u are too far from the green box
or UBR like ADSL??

I have an NTL250 modem and I upgraded from the 24.99 pachage (2MB) up to the 37.99 and receive the 10MB service I only upgraded last thu/fri all worked perf until today. My speeds are all over the place getting results as low as 1MB and under! :dozey:

Should have stayed on the 2MB service as I was on that for months and I never had any probs at all!

Teach me for being gready. I would recommend to others to wait before requesting the upgrade.

Anyone any info on routers - do their WAN ports tend to be 10MB or 10/100?
Looking at the Belkin F5D7230UK4, but none of the info I can find states the spec for the WAN port, just that the LAN ports are 10/100.

Yeah i just checked, one site said I was on 1mb and ADSLguide said my downstream was 166k, so I am guessing thats more like 2mb. Im sure it used to be 3mb im sure cos I used to get downloads at 250k/s which is more like a 3mb line. Although I have tried a few sites and they all came back with ~160k/s.

The funny thing is I just downloaded a 20mb file (latest driver from nvidia) and I was getting ~240k/s. When I had a 512k I was getting about 40-50k/s, when it went to 750k (I think it was) i was getting about 75-80k/s and all of this judging by the output from IE. So I am a little confused, I know compression can be used but I wasn't using any download accelerators just IE standard. Maybe its just IE reporting the speed wrong or due to compression it is calculating the speed... I dunno but I am guessing I have a 2mb line from the speed tests.

I've been given one for a DTV fault, the broadband was interferring with the TV and causing it to freeze all the time. Have had numerous engineers out about it, and even had a new cable pulled etc and nothing stopped it, so they are moving me on to SACM
