But Paul

They are not NTL so they can get away with it. However if NTL did it then the same old crew from here would lambast them and scream. "LETS REPORT THEM TO THE ASA"

Mean while the same old crew will be saying i am off to bulldog there grass is greener than NTL's.

But at the end of the day they are still here in there little corner complaining about how bad NTL is and then continuing to use them.

Well the reason why Bulldog customers aren't complaining on here is because it is a NTL forum. NTL customers come here, generally if they have a complaint, not with daily "all is well" comments. It's not rocket surgery. ;)

Terrible advertising by bulldog. It equates to £36 a month (assuming you use more than 9gig a month) for less speed than NTL with the added likelyhood you probably won't even be able to get the full 8mb. MMM..pay more for less speed and have to use bulldog as my phone provider...that's a tough one :). The ASA really do need to do something about their TV adverts as they are VERY misleading.

Also, from Paul M's reply to Zeph, does that mean 10mb will be going to down to £25? I assumed 10mb (capped) will be at £35 and 2mb (unlimited) will be at £25 or have I missed something.

Well I am a teacher and I would support most of what Iggy said about the need for clear, well spelt, grammatically correct and hopefully well punctuated written, typed or spoken english, although I would perhaps, have put it more diplomatically. ;)

If you want to communicate information to another you do need to apply all of the above. If you don't then you are in danger of causing confusion and with passing on technical info to a rube like me you do need to leave out the technical jargon and the acronyms. If you are too lazy to do so then all you do is make me pass over what maybe excellent advice because I cannot be bothered to try and decipher what you have typed. :erm:

You also in speaking need to leave out idiomatic english IF you want to communicate to another who doesn't speak that particular idiom. It also helps to leave out the patois as well.Rapping is all well and good in the right place but frankly it baffles me. ;)

Re: *All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

D’you know sometimes you have to giggle at Ntl CS. Don’t get me wrong, I’m very happy with my service. I’m on 10 meg and absolutely love the speed but can’t really justify the cost for a 10gig capped service when I can get unlimited 2 meg for less dosh.

Yes, I thought about ADSL and even had BT run tests but I live a fair distance from a BT exchange so ADSL was never really going to be an option with 512 at best. But I can honestly say the Ntl broadband service has been superb in recent months (a happy customer - perhaps they should have me stuffed J).

A few minutes ago I called CS to ask when the 2 meg unlimited service would be available. The guy was very cheerful and helpful but had no idea what I was talking about and went off to get some info. Within 30 seconds he was back on the line to say he didn’t know anything, it’s sometime next year and how would I like half price broadband for 3 months to stay on the higher tier?! Unbelievable. I didn’t ask for discount, I simply enquired about the move to 2 meg and when is unlimited starting. So, not to look a gift-horse in the mouth I gratefully accepted and wished him well for the holidays!

So I’ve had my upgrade, I have stable speeds, Ntl are answering my prayers for unlimited AND I get it all for a low price.

Happy Christmas Ntl – you’re the best! :tu:
:xmas:

EDIT: yes, yes I see the error - obviously so happy with Ntl I got capped to 10 gig!
Should read 75gig or 10 meg - you choose....

Back on topic: So can we download as much as we want now without our souls being burned alive by NTL or do we still have to wait until January? Someone earlier said he'd called NTL and they said the cap was lifted already. Anyone else clarify that? And where's my email from NTL?

You may want to check back through the forum, you may get a bit of a shock.
Those forcibly put on the 512k bad boy line, i think you will find once there its permanent & therefore no upgrading to a faster speed.

Just had my bill from NTL: with the Cap Removal information on the back of one of the pages.

Hope it applies to 1mb connections to, (I'm on 2mb at the moment).
I don't need speed, but the 3gb cap was unrealistic!

BTW I am dyslexic, but then I have a spell checker installed in FireFox so even that isn't an excuse.

Re: *All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

Hi, I reluctantly joined NTL due to house move. I wanted to stay with Eclipse ADSL (2M £29 no caps). But the previous owner had cut BT cables and BT couldnt get an engineer around until 16th of Jan! So I reluctantly joined NTL knowing it had a bit of 'a history'. I voiced my concerens about the caps, and a chap I spoke to said they are reviewing the caps and thinking about getting rid of them?? And they are not currently enforced. I know that staff sometimes say any old rubbish verbally, has anyone else heard the same?

Also can NTL really just suspend your service for as long as they like and make you still pay?

I'd rather they just terminate it and I get back on a decent ADSL service.

If I ever get a warning letter I'll probably do something that is breech of T&C document it and asked to be released from my contract :)

I dont get TV or phone from them so no skin off my back.

Lordy

The caps are not currently really being enforced unless you take the mickey with your usage. If you read the thread you will see that in the next year they will be offering the following Tarrifs:

o 1MBit Unlimited (17.99)
- 10MBit Capped (17.99)
o 2MBit Unlimited (24.99)
- 10MBit Capped (24.99)
o 10MBit - 75GB Cap (34.99)

There are no definite dates for ay of this

That was my interpretation of http://home.ntl.com/page/userpolicy

Quote:

In the event that you exceed the usage allowances applicable to your Internet Services, we reserve the right (at our sole discretion) to reduce, suspend or terminate your Internet Services. During any period of reduction or suspension, you will remain liable for the payment of your Internet Services charges at the original level. We also reserve the right (at our sole discretion) to re-grade your Internet Services to a different speed and/or usage allowance at the appropriate charge.
Does that literally mean ntl could suspend you (for some period) whilst you pay full whack. If so, it seems like an unfair term to me. Anyway, I guess its not relevant now as I'm on 2Mb. :) (Their routers seem to drop a lot of packets though!)

Re: *All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

lordy it seems to be the case that they are not enforcing them to exact measurements but if you breach around the 150gig mark then you may get throttled down to 512kbit permenantly.

My thoughts exactly. Sounds like you could get out of it using

http://www.oft.gov.uk/Consumer/Unfai...ts/default.htm,

but you have to pay your dues whilst fighting it in court.
Alternatively just ask NTL (in writing) to released you from contract otherwise you will take it to court using "Unfair Terms" etc..

I understand that some here are stuck on the bad boy 512 line for the rest of their contract whilst paying for the faster service? If so this just doesnt sound right to me. Get together and send some synchronised recorded delivery letters asking to be re-instated or released from contract. And threaten to tell the Register/Inquirer to. NTL do not want any bad press at this time whilst trying to get a chunk of the whole internet services "thing". Once you are released from contract, you should be able to sign up again ??? (Thats just a guess on my part)

grubbymitts 28-12-2005 13:17

Re: *All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

I think those who were put in the naughty bin are only paying £17.99 a month - NTL lawyers probably told their clients not to push the paying full price idea.

A friend of mine is stuck on the 512k until February and then his contract runs out. One phone call to NTL around this time saying he's swapping to Sky and BT (he also has the TV) unless he gets back 2mb will probably sort it out. Other than that, it's a simple case of not renewing the contract, leaving it a week and then contacting sales and ask for a new account.

Re: *All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

If you're within the 12 month term, it's quite possible that they have you by the short and curlies, unless your problem is a result of the terms changing to your disadvantage.

Out of that, I don't see that there is anything to stop the inevitable response to "we suspend or restrict your service", being "I give 30 days notice" - assuming you have any practical alternative.

I am only guessing here but the situation is probably likely to be that they wont strictly enforce it in the short term and if your area isnt been saturated and the usage is reasonable not in the 100s of gig a month they may leave you alone, if they do enforce it then yes based on current events you would be moved to the 512kbit unmetered at 17.99 which then if you are out of the initial year contract I presume a call to retentions would get you put on the 2mbit unmetered for 24.99, if you in the initial 12 months then you would be stuffed although retentions still may take pitty.

I know of at least 1 user that was refused point blank to be uplifted back up. He then said i want to leave and they let him with no argument whatsoever.

If you think about it. anyone that was or is being put on the 512 k bad boys service would have been warned at least once. What isp would want to keep a user that even after being warned has decided they are above the rules that the isp has set to ensure the well being of the network.

I for one class myself as a heavy user. 5 computers in the house with what are now 5 adults and a thirst for first run tv made sure of that ;). I am going on the 2 meg unlimited service, I then do not have to worry about being stuffed onto the bad boy service every time i would have gone over the cap.

As speeds go up and up Isp's will find it harder and harder to provide a unlimited service at the upper speeds. They will have 3 choices.

A. Limit bandwidth by hard capping.

B. Traffic shape the p2p and newsgroup services. "this is the one i think they will go for. They can hide it from the average user completely"

C. Offer unlimited services at the lower speeds only.

Give it a year and see if i am correct ;)

The likes of BE and UKonline can offer unlimited on there 24 meg service due to the small area's they are in at the moment. Also they know that the majority of there users will never get close to the 24 meg speeds they are saying in there adverts due to distance from the exchange of the average user. There service the same as NTL is a upto service.

I have already be told due to the distance from the exchange that i will only get between 9 and 14 meg during the day if i decided to use UKonline, If i want BE then its late next year for me , However i will still be paying for 24 meg. :Yikes:

So for me its stay with NTL on a service that has hardly ever let me down and use the 2 meg unlimited option. :tu:

I dont know... it just seems unfair of ntl to promise the customer the earth with 10Mb faster this faster that, download this download that, free broadband plus to download even more! faster upload speeds to upload even more! What will happen when they increase the bandwidth even more? will they up the cap like they have done from 30gig to 75gig whats the point, so they give us 25mb and up the cap to 100gig? - 200gig? lol... I cant see them carrying on doing this without charging for the extra usage or getting rid of it all together. It's like a stalemate situation, a no change situation, catch 22! We'll give u the faster speeds but you cant use them! oh no, if you do then we'll kick you back down to the lower slower speed. Something has to give. this is stupid!

If you think about the amount you can download with 2mb unlimited over a month, thats what they ought to make the cap for the top tier 10mb speed.
There again you would still be able to use that bandwidth up in 6 days, but at least it would seem fairer for anyone who wants the top speed.

You know we are all now talking about 'caps'. Once this was not an option, it was all about speed and the wonder of a permanent connection to the internet without the need to watch your phone bill. Slowly (at least in the UK) we are seeing the insidious rise of the 'cap'. Initial outrage of about 18 months ago has turned to .. "well maybe xxxgigs a month is ok/people who do xxxgig should be downgraded/I'll stay with a slow speed so i can download more" slowly we are going along with the whole notion of a cap philosophy when we should be howling with outrage and demanding that BT/NTL and the UK government give us a digital infrastructure that allows fast speeds and unlimited downloading of content of whatever form.

We are no longer watching the clock we are watching our router stats!!

I wonder what would happen if every customer maxed out every day and went way over their monthly caps, would ntl downgrade us all? I have the 10mb and find myself using it more and wanting to use it more! thats what its all about isnt it? I get loads more out of my 10mb than I did out of the 3mb... I am almost sure that what will happen is we will see extra charges coming in for every gig we go over the 75gb and I think this will become the norm for every UK isp out there... How sad! And we'll sit back and let it happen!

Dodger lets hope it stays as a what if, because its obviously a case they are hoping the low usage customers are a high enough number to subisidise the heavier users to make it work.

I am holding of the 2meg since so far I have had no email or letter telling me its going to be unmetered and ideally I want some kind of hard evidence telling me just that.

Well people probably won't max out every day. Family of four here and although usage is heavy we do turn the computers off. We also do other things as well. I think the majority of people get what they need and switch off. We always take this view in the UK that because of the minority the majority suffers. It's constantly a the 'end of known civilisation' everyone is going to max out their connections - NO! It's reminds me of the ballyhoo from the press about the change to licensing laws recently. I've been out late several times and haven't noticed anything different. End of the world as we know it? It really just never happens!

I am sure that there are ISP's about who will give you what you want, fast speeds and unlimited downloading of content of whatever form. The only problem is that you probably wouldn't be able to afford the cost of being provided with such a service. You can't expect to buy a new Ferrari and pay the cost of a 20 year old Skoda with no MOT for it.

People have to stop comparing what is available in other parts of the World and what those services cost. You live in the UK and have to take what is being offered here and pay the cost involved. UK ISP's would have to spend billions to provide what you want, billions that they do not have and billions that most people are not prepared to pay their fair share of in higher subscription costs.

sorry but no

we should expect the best we live in one of the richest counties in the world we should expect one of the best services

the problem isnt the cost its the fact that most companies here want to screw the maximum money for the least outlay and they mostly get away with it because the british are loath to complain

the evidence now shows that uncaped ( service are providable by ntl ) as we now have them

as to speed i was alway aware that it was an ( up to ) not a set speed and that i was contending with others conected to the service for my bandwidth

but what i and others want is a set fee no cut off ect

You could say so much in response to that 'sentence' couldn't you  but it would take the thread madly off topic.

Britain is a ****hole with a **** poor standard of living relatively and both companies, government and other citizens queueing up to rip you off to be honest. In between being ripped off by the Govt in terms of ridiculously high taxation and private companies charging over the odds we're in trouble.

BUT a lot of the reason for this apparent overcharging is things such a bureaucracy, wage levels needing to be relatively high to support our prodigious tax bills, poor productivity, etc, etc with some simple profiteering.

It's not as simple as just saying that companies simply rip us off. If that were the case someone would undercut them all.

We pay what we have to pay sadly. Blame companies, regulators, government, the unemployed, the unions, etc, etc.

I'm pretty sure you said no company could pull off an unlimited 2mbit service for £25 a month during NTL's last round of speed upgrades. They've been offering that service unofficially since then, and now made it official.

ISPs such as Be and UKonline have put thought into their unlimited, high speed services, and who knows, NTL may soon follow their lead.

Why is it people only think that thought has been put into something if they agree with it? Is it not possible, nay, probable, that NTL have put some thought into it (with a bit more access to the actual costs involved) and come to a different but valid conclusion than you have by pulling figures out of a bag?

As has been said many times (many, many times) before, the ADSL offerings are not directly comparable to the cable offerings. The infrastructure costs have been negligible in comparison to the cable companies, the user base is much smaller and they don't have to worry about integrating different platforms from the premerged offerings.

The only thing that has kept them back is the feet dragging of BT in unbundling the local loop and the persistent problem of line distance from the exchange which can cripple the service. And I'm not sure the delay has actually hurt them as much as might seem.

You are buying a service from a company, you don't have to if you don't want to. To use as blatantly cock-eyed an argument as the TV analogy, you don't whinge at your baker because your loaf is capped!

Can anyone verify any official word on whether this applies to existing contracts too...

Doubt it, it's probably due to the large number of I can't get my 10B to work properly threads. Can't complain about going through your cap if you can't P2P at full speed can you:dozey:

And i think it will be a cold day in hell when they remove that. There is the potential to download over a terabyte of data a month on that connection and i for one don't want a billy downloader on the same cab as me with 10 meg downloading the internet.

Re: *All* ntl Cap Discussion (part 4)

That is individual choice you can either have 1mb or 2mb uncapped or you can have 10mb with a 75gb cap, later this year there will be cheaper 10mb options but with smaller caps too. At the end of the day it boils down to choice, do you want speed but with a cap or have you got patience & can wait for things to download. In effect you can download at 1/5 of the speed but a substantial amount more over the course of the month

I suspect that most people who do large amounts of downloading use bitTorrent or some other P2P 'service' and they will not notice much benefit from the 10meg service as downloads are rarely very fast anyway. They will be much better off on the 1 or 2 meg unlimited.

Sorry to disagree but the dedicated heavy downloaders have moved off the inherently insecure p2p systems and are now using the newsgroup services. If you want evidence of that just look how many newsgroup speed threads there now are on this forum.

Bittorent is now slowing down as more and more bittorrent users limit there upload with there client or with Netlimiter. This is then slowly stopping the big downloaders from using it as they can not get full speed on bittorrent, They then look at other options which is News servers.

Bittorrent speed also depends on how many seeds you have. Personally i have downloaded the knoppix dvd iso file 3.11gb at an average speed of 75kb/s on the 2mb line.
I think if eveyone was more willing to allow things to take a bit of time to download then you wouldn't see people moaning about 10mb having caps.
Myself i find the 2mb line is more than adequate for speed, with the added bonus of no cap!

If you look at my services you will see i am a 2 meg user as well and i am willing to download my stuff over night so it does not affect other users. I honestly think that the isp's will start to traffic shape soon to reduce the pressure on there networks. And the way it will be done will not be affected by changing ports :(, This will then make p2p software even less of a problem to the Isp.

I agree with you there, traffic shaping appears to be a popular choice for isp's. Not neccessarily a sound one though with the encrypted p2p solutions turning up now, these apparently make the detection of whats being transfered indeterminable from other traffic.

Hmmm looks like its back to 2mb for me as I cant stand the idea of silly limits.

Let's all keep a copy of NTL's advertising blurb, quote " a massive 75gb download limit" and see what that look like in December 2006 when IPTV, new Google and Microsoft services, web and video blogs and lots more stuff is developed to entice us to download lots more 'legal' content.

It will change because it will have to.

FYI, We expect the trials of usage monitoring to start next week - with a roll out to start around April/May.

The current expectation is that anyone exceeding their cap (e.g. 75G) will have their speed cut to 128K (up & down) until the end of the usage month.

As previously stated, ntl's policy on the bad boys is that they stay stuck on 512K, allthough we understand the frontline is not necessarily enforcing this as they should .....

To be honest it might be needed to keep the 1 or 2 Billy downloaders on 10 meg from wrecking it for all. Lets face it someone on the Newsgroups who wanted to take the **** could do over a terabyte a month. Now we all know that there are those that must download the internet because they can.

hmm interesting, I will be honest and did exceed the 75 gig in my 1st month, but it wasnt a usual month for me and I spect to be below it this month. I didnt exceed it by a huge amount tho (was under 150gig) I think if they throttle down to 128kbit for remainder of month it is fair, I wonder with the 24.99 tier it been possible to download almost 9 times as much, if 75gig is a reasonable figure considering that rival isp's offer much higher limits for a comparable price.

Also with these trial's is there any news on a meter been made useable by customer's? as I think ntl are going about it backwards, they should be providing the tools first to monitor usage followed by the enforcement.

That is the reason i went straight on 2 meg unlimited as soon as i was certain it was unlimited. I dont give a hoot about speed, I want to be able to download what i want when i want without the worry of the bandwidth meter running. I download my stuff at a night time and i do that in the hope it then does not affect other users on the same UBR as me.

As far as 10 meg and 75gig goes. I think NTL should also offer the ability to buy additional gigs of usage over 75 gig for those that need the extra usage. BT have started to do that now to users that exceed the allowance for the month.

Down to 128k is a bit silly, why not down to 2 meg ?

2 meg is unlimited, its less money, so 10 meggers who may occasionally go over 75 gig will get worse service than those who pay less and get more ?
Can't see many staying on 10 meg for very long.

Usual NTL thinking I see :(

Of course with no Broadband Plus working here, no current working NTL newsserver, and the peering to many large sites rubbish at night it would be almost impossible to pass that mark anyhow.

Not really, you sign up to the 10 meg knowing it's limits, so you should stick to them. If you only got knocked down to 2 meg then where would the incentive to behave be ?

If you want unlimited then go on an unlimited service, simple as that.

Not really, you sign up to the 10 meg knowing it's limits, so you should stick to them. If you only got knocked down to 2 meg then where would the incentive to behave be ?

If you want unlimited then go on an unlimited service, simple as that.
Yep I know its limits, no probs for me :)
There is a large difference between 2 meg and 10 meg so I think there would still be an incentive.
I'd guess most people will go on 2 meg unlimited once the online tv stuff gets going properly, I know I will.
So NTL will get less money from me but I'll use more bandwidth, great business sense...
And thats probably about the time it will stop being unlimited.....again...
