As to tonight, Portugal were very lucky.
I dont think that Croatia player touched the ball, and the goal should have stood.

It was yet another 'clear and obvious' moment that, somehow, could only be seen under a microscope from 47 different camera angles . . . nothing fishy to see here

And the other 2 disallowed goals.

Dalic shouldn't have made that late change though. Really messed the shape of the defence and led to the 2nd goal.

Re: World Cup 2026

They had a sound/edge type system that confirmed he touched the ball.

It sucks, but offside is offside. If you start giving them discretion to allow it because it was a minor touch, then you're adding a layer of subjectivity to one of the few rules that is clear-cut. Then, when a similar goal is ruled in or out because that ref that day gave it the other way, then people will be even angrier.

That's exactly what happens week in week out in the PL though.

And I think Senor Arteta would have been proud with Nikola Vlasic's rugby tackle in the area... One thing VAR got spot on.

Where have you seen this ?
If that were the case, why was this not shown, or even mentioned, and why was the ref called to the monitor ?

Technology confirmed that Matanovic did indeed touch the ball before it hit the head of Portuguese player Renato Veiga and rebounded for a deflection between Gvardiol and Rúben Neves, which ended up in the back of the Portuguese goal, but was subsequently disallowed. According to the rules, an offside is nullified if a defending player deliberately plays the ball (controlling, passing, or consciously attempting to intercept). However, if the defender's touch is accidental, such as a bounce or an unintentional deflection, the offside position remains and is sanctioned.

Might not have been sound, but they detected the touch.

Not so much for offsides; the only subjective one there is if a player is interfering with play.

What was harder to determine, even with multiple replays, was whether Matanovic touched the ball.

This was where the Connected Ball Technology, which relies on a microchip installed in the Adidas Trionda ball, came into play.

The inertia measurement unit sensor produces a clear waveform graphic and spikes when contact is made. In this case, the spike shattered Croatia’s dreams.

On its X account, FIFA Media explained: “According to the data provided by Connected Ball Technology... it was proven that contact was made by Croatia’s #20 Igor Matanovic in the build up to the goal against Portugal, allowing the referee to correctly determine offside and disallow the goal.

“IMU sensors housed within the Trionda ball are capable of determining any slight contact, displayed to viewers in the broadcast as a ‘heartbeat graphic’, and allowing officials an unprecedented level of data to make fast, accurate decisions.”

May as well just get one bloke from each country to play FIFA on the X Box, saves money on stadiums (stadia?), Injures (although a possible sore thumb if you reach the final), and policing/crowd control.

Won't cost fans an arm and a leg and games can be streamed 'live' to anyone owning an X Box :D

I think it only 'came to light' with all the furore about the decision, they obviously had to find something that supported it.

Apparently a 'sound' was detected as the ball was in the vicinity of the players head . . some wildly brilliant answers on social media have suggested things like a fly farting or the ball hitting a small moth. ;)

Folarin Balogun is available to play for the United States in their World Cup last-16 tie against Belgium after his one-game ban was suspended by Fifa.

The 25-year-old striker was shown a straight red card for a foul on Bosnia-Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemovic as the co-hosts won their last-16 tie 2-0.

FIFA has broken its own rules by doing a U-Turn on the US players red card, its rules say that the USA should be kicked out for political interference. So I'm expecting our PM demand that the English player sent of is allowed to play.

UEFA going in two footed on FIFA over the Balogun situation.

https://www.uefa.com/news-media/news...-balogun-case/

Quote:

Yesterday’s decision to suspend for a probationary period of a year the implementation of the one-match automatic suspension following the red card issued to the player Folarin Balogun crossed a red line.

Football, like any other sports, relies on rules, which are the basis for fair, honest and transparent competition. Sometimes rules are open to interpretation. In this case not. A minimum automatic suspension of one match following a red card is not a discretionary option and does not require the decision of a competent body to be enacted. It is a principle embedded in regulations, which cannot be made subject to exceptions, let alone in the middle of a tournament where several other players have been in the same situation and regularly served their suspension.

When the certainty of rules is no longer guaranteed by its guardians, the integrity of the game is at stake and the credibility of a competition is undermined. Equally, such decision creates a precedent in the ongoing tournament, where similar situations will now require an equal treatment, to the detriment of the competition.

Football is the most loved sport in the world because it is a beautiful game and is trusted because it is played everywhere with the same laws. A tournament is never a pure standalone and, if the tournament in question is the World Cup, it has the power to drive positive or negative consequences on the game as a whole.

We express our disbelief at such an unprecedented, incomprehensible and unjustifiable decision.

The game ended when they got the first goal. Why go to defense against a team like that I don't know. They had it and they blew it.

Cheer up, it's what we expect.

A flat back 6 was asking for trouble with half an hour to go.

Trying to park the bus against Argentina with that much time remaining was silly , Tuchel then making defensive subs compounded the problem further.

As Paul said, they blew it

Will there be a fair few managers in the Premier League (and lower) that agree that's what the problem was . . . while also not recognising that their tactics are often quite similar?

Agree to a degree.

Tuchel was brought in to take the team to the next level , yesterday’s tactics however were exactly the same as Southgate would have used.

But it’s all very easy for us armchair pundits

Premier League is kind of different. Teams are more organised and can execute a low block far better than England did last night.

We were soaking up pressure but at no point did we look defensively secure. Nightmare all around.

I loved the UK Government's slapback "The World Cup might not be ours, but the Falkland Islands definitely are.”

Well I know many think tonights match v France is a somewhat pointless match, but we actually look good in the first half, 3 - 0 up, should be more.
