Is there any point waiting for outbound retentions to offer 500mb for around £26?. I guess outbound rententions dont work weekends aswell so it will be too late anyway and i'll be signed up elsewhere. |

I'm on Volt here. £85 a month to Virgin Media, £27.92 for O2 mobile and £14.81 for a Virgin Mobile Sim only. Contract ends in June. Email says £21.50 increase and I guess the mobile charges will increase by 17% ? Sadly that's the end of me and Virgin after all these years. I have to give notice by the end of March the email says and I will. Goodbye Virgin.

From the Daily Mail As millions tied to cynical deals face extra charges, we urge watchdog to act: Pull plug on phone and broadband giants' price hike rackets... NOW! The regulator, Ofcom, is looking into this issue, but has only promised to publish its initial findings later in the year. It admitted to The Mail on Sunday that it will not publish them until after this year's price rises have taken effect. That is why today the MoS is calling for: A ban of mid-contract price hikes; Customers to be allowed to exit their contract penalty-free if they are not happy with mid-contract increases to their bills; Ofcom to urgently report its findings before it's too late. |

Anyone who goes for this needs to check if this puts them into a new contract. Different people have been told different things. Also, those who take this need to understand that it's extremely unlikely that you will be offeted any retention deals in the future. IMO Virgin are likely to assume that, having paid £35 for free streaming of FTA TV, you are unlikely to want to leave and, therefore, retention discounts won't be forthcoming. If you do end up leaving it's £35 down the drain and, if you leave, return & want it again, another £35 will be charged again. |

Ofcom part of their remit is to look out for those they regulate, its likely they wont make a decision until after May I think so as to not disrupt the current rises, but if government intervenes due to political pressure then anything could happen. I do think though VMs approach with the current RTC will be the same as always, cancel the increase via discounts to those who haggle/complain, and take in the extra for those who dont. |
Re: Price rises this year.
I think this is too late to have any impact on the main culprits, BT and Virgin Media

I think that might be an expensive lesson for VM. It is annoying as I have no issue with the VM BB service but why do I want to enter into a 18/24 month VM contact when I can get FTTP at a higher speed and a lower monthly price along with a guarantee of NO in contract price rises. |
Re: Price rises this year.
We are still waiting for a price rise notification but from l can ascertain they are being rolled out to customers over a period of a couple of months.

I've done a deal, paying less than I was before. Mainly hesitated as I might be moving to a non cabled area this year, but VM promise not to charge cancellation charges if this is the case. We'll see.... The RPI + 3.8% increases and non cancellation during the contract is something to be aware of, but on balance I've gone for it. Took over an hour from when my call was answered to get the deal/ price screwed down, no wonder they want to stop this farce every year. Tremendous waste of everyone's time, doubtless they hope most are apathetic/can't be bothered. Good business model I guess. Might backfire in these 'tight' times though. |

It's interesting how the tone has changed with people leaving/significantly downgrading their VM package. In times of old, people would replate us with tales of awesome deals from retentions. I'd like to see figures from VM for customers leaving this yr vs last.
Of note, now Openreach etc are making significant strides into what was exclusive VM territory offering for some (me) peer competition for the first time, I believe will only add to VM market loss unless changes are made to their model and pricing. |
Re: Price rises this year.
I’ve been researching broadband alternatives as I await the confirmation that my Volt deal is going up by 25% in April. I’m somewhat surprised that the small town I live in has no 5g or fibre alternatives to Virgin Media. The “small town”? London
|
Re: Price rises this year.
This morning I have had a letter, no not that Virgin letter, but from Vodafone, it is adressed to the Occupier and has been posted through all the letterboxes localy
The letter starts off "Just had some news from Virgin Media about your Broadband?" You could switch to Vodafone Full Fibre Broadband, penalty free. The letter goes on to offer Vodafone Full Fibre 500 broadband @ £30 per month, Vodafone compares this price to Virgins M350 Fibre Broadband @ £38.25 per month Vodafone is certainly taking advantage of Virgins Price rise and are already targetting Virgin customers. I now have 3 Fibre options that are faster than Virgin and cost less |
Re: Price rises this year.
We got our letter today, going up £15 a month from 1st April.
We are out of contact and paying £112 at the min, for TV, Internet and Phone, no Sky Sports or Sky Movies. |
Re: Price rises this year.
No letter here yet, but even when we get it, we have no fibre options available here - I can get "up to" 76Mb/s from alternative suppliers.

I ended up taking the plunge, as I did get the offer, and also figured if I need to leave early I could somehow convince a operator to waive the fee. So even if mid contract rises become illegal, it will still be legal to charge an extra arm for short term contracts. |

Just used the WhatsApp service to add a channel (ViaPlay for Scottish football !). Very responsive, change effected in 16 minutes; they were a bit pushy in offering me Sky UHD channels for the "fantastic" price of £7 per month, which I managed manfully, to resist.
They also asked to "review my contract" but since it's not due to finish until June, I managed to avoid that as well. |

I think the best option is to agree the price and stick to it for the duration of the contract. If companies can't estimate their costs 18 month in the future then the simple answer is don't offer 18 month contracts. Could you imagine the uproar if the price of your house or car insurance increased in price mid contract? |

Re: Price rises this year.
When Virgin only offered 12 month contracts it wasn’t an issue, but now it’s 18 or 24 month contracts it is a major concern. I know the newer providers are promising no increases under contract but let’s not be naive on that - once established, they’ll get away with whatever they can. The only broadband providers offering 12 months or less I’ve found are the mobile companies and NOW.
OFCOM is failing the customer. Mandate 12 month contracts with no midterm rises and that should be enough. |

Just had the email, however!
"However, this 2023 price increase won't affect you until your current price offer ends" "We understand these are tough times. And if you’re struggling, we’ll do everything we can to help you. That could be giving you extra time to pay your bill, reviewing your package, or working out a payment plan. If you're not happy with any of the changes announced in this email, including those to our out of home WiFi hotspots and pricing terms and conditions, you can change or cancel your package, any time before 4th April 2023, without paying any cancellation fees." But when i do the online chat is says I am not affected by the price rise. So my RTC is more for the change in terms. |
Re: Price rises this year.
So I was offered to change my package from £60 for everything, to £55 a month for just 350MB BB. Mix It TV plus a box and kids package for £55 discounted to £50.
The other option was to keep my package and then cancel 30 days before the end of my contract (Sept). I noticed when i called to cancel, there was an option to take a £10 discounted offer for 6 months, when my contract ends and I can then negotiate a new deal or quit. I notice that all the providers are doing the inflation + 3.x% rises. So it is not just Virgin. |

I just want lowest BB only, best offer was £32 for 50mb. Unfortunately they dont have much competition in this area, no one else can offer more then 30mb, I think i'm stuck into accepting it. |

I'm more fortunate in that regard, Openreach are busily working in my area converting exchanges ,installing poles etc. I'm confident by the time June 24 rolls around, it'll be done.
Small market town W. Mids, surrounded by ruralness, seems odd that London would be bereft of that type of infrastructure already. |

Had another look at my contract, I missed a bit that links to a page on VM for "generic" terms and conditions, and that bit it links to includes a clause of VM been able to opt out of the price, but also the entire contract. It does state though as was said a penalty free exit can happen, so if I do get the price rise email, I will be haggling for it to be discounted like others have done.
