I tell ya the CREED cassette I got the other day is outstanding (Newest cassette I have that sounds this good)

THIS ALBUM IS FROM 1999 and I cant believe how good it sounds on the cassette!! (No heavy bass, just sounds goregous)

No Dolby on the tape that might be 1 reason it sounds so good..... This is said to be thier BEST ALBUM and I can see why partly..... It was produced excellent for 1999! (It sounds excellent in analogue)

Stephen 20-03-2024 02:53

Re: What Media did you last get??

A cassette from 1999. Surely it has dolby NR or some other noise reduction. Its a good thing as it helps tapes sound clear and reduces background noise. Tapes were prone to it. I was buying nothing but CDs by that point, still have them all. Though not long after I bought a minidisc recorder.

Dude111 20-03-2024 05:20

Well usually if a cassette or 8track has dolby it has the dolby symbol (https://www.cableforum.uk/images/loc...9cs0jxnjkwhafs) and this one doesnt :)

Stephen 20-03-2024 12:31

Re: What Media did you last get??

As far as I'm aware, we'll what I can remember. Doesn't matter if a tape was duplicated with Dolby or not.

It's the player that decodes the dolby signal. So if the tape deck doesn't have the circuits for it then it won't have any effect.

All Dolby NR did was to reduce the tape hiss making the tape sound cleaner. Tapes were created to be a cheaper format, and inherently it needed Dolby to improve the quality of the recording playback. Dolby NR stopped being licensed in 2003 after pre-recorded tapes stopped being prodiced .

However in recent years some bands and artists have started to release cassettes of recent releases. No Dolby is around. However digital recordings and current ways to duplicate tapes does help reduce the hiss present. I have bought a few new tapes recently but never listened to them.

Dude111 23-03-2024 17:24

I dont understand Stevie.. None of my cassettes or 8 tracks have a hiss.. UNLESS I TURN THE VOL ALL THE WAY UP,then I hear a hiss of course.....

There are people in excess of 5,000

Yeah I used to log them all on a DVD site ages ago. Laser Discs are all logged on a LD database site. All my Retro videogames are tracked on an app on my phone.

Re: What Media did you last get??

3 new records from my monthly vinylbox sub.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience – Axis: Bold As Love - remastered from original analogue tapes.
Nominee - Lowlife - never heard of them, from Texas bit of a similar sound to some early 2000 ginger rock type bands. Not bad.
Foxx Bodies - Vixen - again not heard of them. Bit of an angst girl rock group, sound is quite raw. Maybe an angry No Doubt type maybe.

It's a good way to get music you love and find some new stuff even if they turn out to not be great.

Dude111 19-07-2024 14:53

Yes Stevie...... I have gotton alot of stuff I had no idea what it was and it is gold!!

1 is a cassette I got: VANILLA FUDGE - Rock and Roll (1969)

Excellent album!!!!!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_%2...a_Fudge_album)

I hadnt ever heard of VANILLA FUDGE but Im glad I got it!!

Its the first original ATCO release (Paper Labels) and sounds excellent!!

Do you still have any cassettes buddy??

Stephen 19-07-2024 15:59

Re: What Media did you last get??

Not any old cassettes. Just some recent new runs old older albums for their anniversary etc. Though they are kept sealed as collectors items. Only 1000 of Blackened Sky and 2200 of Puzzle. Both from Scottish rock band Biffy Clyro.

All my older early 90s and late 80s stuff went long ago. Just got Records, CDs and Minidiscs as music formats.

Dude111 20-07-2024 22:57

Im glad your hanging onto your records, they are beautiful :)

Stephen 21-07-2024 02:17

Re: What Media did you last get??

Some are my dads and the go back to the 60s and 70s. Probably half are old originals and rest are new.

Dude111 21-07-2024 04:22

I try to get originals of stuff if I can because stuff got bad in the 70s production wise....

I had a 1975 woodstoclk cassette release it sounded thin and gross! (Like it was from a digital bin) I then got the original 1970 cassettes and they sound goregous!!

Stephen 21-07-2024 11:22

Re: What Media did you last get??

Of all the 70s and 80s records I've got and listened to sound fine.

Got a bunch of his old 7 inch singles also mostly from the 60s.

That tape you got it was probably reproduced in the exact same way with the same equipment. However as tapes are reproduced the master tapes will wear out over time giving poorer sound quality much like when video tapes are copied that often they would eventually be of a lesser quality.

That introduces that benefits of digital mastering, every version produced from it will always sound the same it doesn't deteriorate.

Dude111 21-07-2024 20:09

I see,its all very complicated............

Stephen 21-07-2024 20:15

Re: What Media did you last get??

It's not all that complicated.

Every time a cassette or VHS is played or copied the head runs against the tape, so over time it decreases in quality, so what you had on its first play is not the same as what you get after the 100th play. Whether it's video or audio.

Same with vinyl records. You have a needle going through the grooves and over time that's how you can end up with static or pops and crackles.

Stephen 24-07-2024 20:01

Re: What Media did you last get??

Purple Rain 40th Anniversary 4K UHD and Blu Ray steelbook edition and

3) Vulnerable - The used

This is from 2012 but I wanted to see if it was any good.... I didnt know what they played or anything...

http://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vulner...he_Used_album)

Its actually not bad.... No swearing in any song, thats rare for after 2000 and it sounds pretty good.... It was obviously mixed analogue for the record.

This is the newest music on record I have foumd that is good!

I highly doubt it is mixed analogue for a 2012 release. Especially not from a rock band it would still be stereo. Also why do you think everything after 2000 would have swearing? It would usually only be rap or some extreme heavy type stuff that would have bad language.

Never heard of them but I see from your link the once supported Evanescence on tour and the album charted fairly high in the US. So must be some what known.

Dude111 14-08-2024 19:11

Yes its stereo (Not Mono)

They messed up on the label though...It says 45 but its 33

Yea I havent heard of them either and from looknig at the link I posted, this is probably thier BEST album!!

It sounds like its Mixed analogue and not PCM Steve.. Bryan Adams 1984 album was mixed PCM and it was hard to find one I liked.... (I finally found a CRC release on cassette that sounds good (The level is slightly lower that may be why))

Stephen 14-08-2024 19:30

Re: What Media did you last get??

It'll be downsized to stereo more than likely. You'll not find much modern new music in mono.

As for the label stating 45, it's usually only 7 inch singles that come as 45rpm or the occasional 12inch dance mix or single.

As for their best I'd have to listen, there are 7 albums after that one.

Dude111 18-08-2024 22:32

Ya this is the only one I heard....... One of thier later ones has swears in the title....

I dunno...I dont see the need for vulgarity to make something look good......

Stephen 19-08-2024 00:25

Re: What Media did you last get??

Swearing or using cuss words in this modern age doesn't really bother many people you hear them pretty much everyday, sometimes as friendly banter, especially here in Scotland.

It's not about making something look cool, it's more about conveying strong emotions much of the time rather than just using them for the hell of it. I mean I love some hip hop and rap and you'll certainly hear a lot of it there. Some using it to comedic effect.

Same for use in movies or on TV. Don't look up Dawn French's recent book title if you are offended by swear words lol. British comedienne and when on daytime TV they couldn't actually say the title of it but it is funny.

Dude111 19-08-2024 04:47

I hear ya buddy :)

I guess it doesnt bother me all that much......

Dude111 18-09-2024 04:41

I got a record and a cassette on Tuesday :)

1) RECORD: A 45 - Genesis - Throwing it all away and something else which is an instrumental piece of crap,no wonder if wasnt released!! (It say it was unlreleased)

2) CASSETTE: Yes - Big Generator (I also have the record)

Stephen 18-09-2024 07:02

Re: What Media did you last get??

Sorry dude, how can it be unreleased if its on a record? The single reached number 4 on the US billboard and number one on the Billboard adult contemporary chart and as the second single taken from the Invisible Touch Album. Single released in October '86 in the US. June '87 ib UK.

The US 7 inch single had two tracks. The second being an edited version of the instrumental track do the neurotic. UK version had a different track.

Bands often used to release instrumental versions or remixes of songs as the B sides. It may not be your taste, but many find them relaxing or chill out music.

Genesis often did instrumental tracks in their prog rock time. The band loved the song but only played it live a few times. Some even wish it was on the album instead of The Brazilian, which was another instrumental track.

It's very popular among Genesis fans.

Dude111 19-09-2024 00:35

Hmmmmmmm I didnt care for it.. maybe ill play it on my better player and see if I like it......

I have always loved THROWING IT ALL AWAY!!

On the jacket Steve for that 2nd song it says "Previously unreleased" and I dont remember ever hearing it....

I would love hearing what the UK put on there., Probably a better song!!

Stephen 19-09-2024 01:24

Re: What Media did you last get??

Yes so that was the first time it was actually released. Had only ever been played at some concerts live. They have a number of instrumental tracks.

Dude111 21-09-2024 07:05

Yes 1 I love: THE WEST SIDE (1983)

Dude111 28-09-2024 04:22

On Thursday I got 2 cassettes and 2 records :)

2) RECORD: The Everly Brothers - Both sides of an evening (MONO)
3) CASSETTE: Risky Business soundtrack (I love this movie,I have it on VHS :))
4) CASSETTE: Saga - Worlds Apart (I love the song 'ON THE LOOSE' like crazy)

Stephen 28-09-2024 09:22

Re: What Media did you last get??

Picked up a number of Blu Ray 3D films.

Wizard of Oz 3D - the conversion they have done on this classic is simply stunning. The film never looked so good.
The Hobbit trilogy extended editions - again really great and so much depth.
Predator 3D - Arnie classic but aside from a good couple of moments it's the most disappointing 3D I think I've seen.

Dude111 12-10-2024 22:40

I hope ya like em all Stevie :)

In the last couple days I got a few Clint Eastwood movies on VHS.....

1) Sudden Impact - 1983
2) Magnum Force - 1973
3) Dirty Harry - 1971

I got this on its first WCI HOME VIDEO release in 1979 and its goregous!! (Dirty Harry)

I am glad this tape was taken care of through the years.... Alot of VHS dont make it that long (Espeically if it was a rental)

This auction on ebay said "TAPE UNTESTED" but I took a chance and its perfect..... Glorious analogue gold!! (Its got the blue screen at the end with the rating of the movie)

I think this one I have is one of the very first ones released in 1979 of this movie.. (Its got a brown guard and has writing on the guard) (This side faces forward - Do not touch the tape inside))

...and a record :)

The 4 seasons - Working my back back to you (MONO)

Stephen 12-10-2024 23:38

THIS IS THIER LAST GOOD ALBUM!!!!!!!! (Peaceful journey)

Dude111 02-11-2024 07:44

Yesterday I got 2 cassettes and 2 records :)

1) CASSETTE: Ric Ocasek - Beatitude
2) CASSETTE: Slade - We'll bring the house down
2) RECORD: A 45 - Phil Collins: Do you knos Do ya care?/You cant hurry love
3) RECORD: A 45: Barry Manillow: Ready to take a chance again/Sweet Life

This is a stereo mix of this song (Ready to take a chance again) and it sounds better in MONO. It was on a movie and it was MONO there and its also mono on "Barry Manilow Greatest Hits (Record and 8 track))

The Ric Ocasek cassette is insanely good... Its his first SOLO album (1982 (and he does "New Wave" music and its quite good.... His next abum isnt till 1986 when Benjimen Orr put out the album LACE with the smash song "Stay the night"))

All I can find is the song was recorded in stereo. So it would have been in stereo on the single and the soundtrack releases too. I've not seen anything to indicate it was recorded in anything other than stereo. It was the late 70s most things were stereo by then. Technology had progressed by that point. Nothing sounds better in Mono!

Our ears were designed to hear 360 sound, so stereo will naturally appeal to our ears as we can hear the different sounds and instruments more clearly.

Batman - the complete TV series on Bluray. The best Batman ever, so much fun and campness. While the remastering is great I sometimes think with material like this squeezing more onto fewer disks would be a nice option, e.g. DVD quality in a smaller package.

Well I saw the film back in 2004 at the cinema and countless times since. I love the film, Zombies, Comedy and romance, everything you need really.

The 4K looks gorgeous. Not watched the new extras yet.

Stephen 09-02-2025 20:31

Re: What Media did you last get??

Yes, an analogue format so you'll appreciate it. Been collecting laserdiscs for 20 years.

Don't buy them often but when I do I buy a few together, and usually only films I love. The last new release was in 2000.

Dude111 10-02-2025 07:59

Wow they released stuff in 2000 Stevie??

Whats awesome..... I dont think any VIDEOdiscs were put out after July 1986 or somewhere near there....... (I think The Jewel of the Nile was the last one pressed to videodisc)

Videodiscs and laserdiscs are neat... They are basically a record being played!!

Stephen 10-02-2025 09:02

Re: What Media did you last get??

Yeah videodiscs were big records read by a needle. Laserdisc looks like a massive CD and read by a laser though it is still analogue. First title came out in 1978 with the last one in 2000.

I think the oldest release i have is from about 1982 and most recent was 1998

Re: What Media did you last get??

Dirty Harry 4K + Blu Ray steelbook.

Dude111 08-05-2025 00:36

Dirty Harry thats a good movie!!

I was lucky to get it on the very first 1979 VHS release....... (I wanna experience how it was when it first came out)

Do you like it Stevie? -- How many Dirty Harry Movies do ya have buddy??

I have

1971 Dirty Harry - 1979 WCI Home Video (Actually this came early enough to still say "Warner Communications" at the start of the tape (It was changed to "WCI HOME VIDEO" in 1979)

1973 Magnum Force - 1980 WCI HOME VIDEO (Just before the change to "Warner Home Video")

1983 Sudden Impact - Warner Home Video

Anyway I last got all this.........

1) Casssette: Scorpions - Crazy World (This was the last album with the original members I read)

2) VHS: The Manhattan Project - 1986

3) Cassette: U2 Live - Under a blood red sky

Its interesting some of the songs on the tape are not from the denver concert but other dates on thier tour that summer...... Not sure why but all the songs are good.... (I also have the concert on VHS)

Stephen 08-05-2025 01:25

Re: What Media did you last get??

I have all 5 on DVD, but Dirty Harry is the first 4K release I've bought. It's a fantastic remaster and looks pristine, reviewrs are saying its one of the best looking in recent years. There is no chance the VHS looks how it did when it was released. The tape will be worn and faded after all these years.

The new 4K transfer is taken from a scan of the original 35mm film and cleaned up and colour corrected, won't get any better than that. Same for the new sound mixes.
