Its so annoying Freesat have lost 4 music channels in two days, VIVA, KISS, 4 MUSIC and MAGIC... Hope we get some new channels soon and also some more music channels soon too as love the music channels...

Highly unlikely due to broadcast rights issues that will ensure it has to remain encrypted. A few sports programmes do get broadcast on Quest, which Discovery networks use as an overflow channel when their isnt space on Eurosport 1 & 2.

You can get Eurosport by subscribing to TVPlayer plus & watching via the internet. Cheaper than Sky or Virgin.

As per this post, it looks like Freesat is to obtain another HD channel sooner rather than later...

Virgin Media does not have the SD version. FreeSports said that virgin media want too much money to air it. They said a few months ago that they would likely launch on Freesat HD/Sky HD for a possible HD channel as it is much cheaper. They said that launching on Freeview HD isn't going to happen any time soon as it costs a fortune, $300k or so for Freeview slot + multimillion broadcast fees from Arquiva to broadcast it on their tv towers.

Would be very embarrassing for Virgin Media if the HD channel launches on FreeSat HD yet paying Virgin Media customers can't get it.

Apparently, there are two more to come, but they are delaying their launch until after May to avoid any confusion when Sky rejig their EPG.

Freesports initially said that they would be going HD "on Sky", but have since indicated that they will also launch this channel on Freesat.

I think that the confusion arose as Freesports, like many people do unfortunately, used the term 'Sky' as a generic term for satellite.

There has been speculation that this launch may include closing the SD version of the channel to help with the extra costs involved, meaning that those without Freesat HD would lose out. Freesat HD boxes can be picked up cheaply though, especially second hand.

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

Will do if/when I find out. The person who I found this out from isn't able to say which they are though, but has been a reliable source of information in the past.

One of them could be Sony Movies as some technical changes have been made that suggest it may be going FTA, especially as the Sony Channel/Sony Crime has now done so too.

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

Channel 4 HD is leaving freesat on Thursday this week I wonder if it will come back later on this year....

RichardCoulter 22-02-2018 20:56

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

I'm sure they will eventually sort out their differences as Channel 4 HD is still in the Freesat SDT- its LCN has been changed from 126 to 0/null, rather than being removed completely. Usually when a channel leaves Freesat, all its records are removed.

In the meantime Channel 4 HD can still be tuned in via Non Freesat mode (some boxes even allow you to add it to the Freesat EPG and/or record from it). Channel 4 SD remains as normal.

I think it's absolutely outrageous that a channel that is owned by the British public has done this though. Channel 4 accounts show that they last made £995 million in profit and paid there outgoing CEO 1 million pounds, yet they claim they can't afford £40,000 to keep the channel on Freesat; this is copper down the sofa for channel 4.

The dispute is because Freesat is putting up its fees for HD channels, yet (out of spite IMO), they have removed the SD channels 4Music and the Box channels as well as All4 that aren't affected by the new pricing structure.

I myself am primarily a VM customer, but recognise that many people are not lucky enough to be able to afford pay TV and/or cannot receive the Freeview service (which is the primary purpose of Freesat).

I urge anyone who feels that this decision is wrong to contact their MP as I have done. You can find your local MP and their email details here:

Hope there are some more new channels coming to freesat soon too and maybe a return to freesat for KISS MAGIC and KERRANG, as saw on king of sat the other day they had moved transponder and it listed freesat as a platform there going to be on again.... Could anyone let me know if this is true?

That's good to hear.

Pick +1 has taken over the CBS Action +1 slot on Freeview. There's speculation that this is a placeholder for the Sky owned channel Real Lives to go FTA.

If this is correct, I think there's a good chance that Real Lives will join Freesat too :)

Sony Crime 2 appears to simply be a Sky EPG placeholder as it is just repeating 3 hour programming on a loop.

I found out that Viceland will be renamed to Vice on 1st May and will focus on content from Vice's online service. Viceland HD is also going on that date so it might be that Vice is leaving the Sky paywall line up.

Do you know if Freesat has a problem today in G73 area, I had to restart mine with the postcode as it just cut out, then at 5 30 it done it again but it started when I switched it off at the wall and it was ok

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

Not heard anything about the satellites malfunctioning, hopefully it isn't your box playing up again!

I've found that digital STB's sometimes misbehave for apparently no reason at all; in fact I had to reboot my V6 twice yesterday evening. The first time it lost sound and the second time it wouldn't properly accept commands from the remote control!

TJC Choice was removed today, I really hope that Freesat review these increased PEG fees as they are having a detrimental effect on a platform that I passionately support.

---------- Post added at 20:30 ---------- Previous post was at 20:10 ----------

Just been told that Quest HD already exists and has been free to air for ages on Arabsat's Badr 4 satellite @ 26e, so it shouldn't take long to bring it to the UK.

That’s a problem with your box, not the satellite. A satellite failure would affect the entire country, not just one postcode, and not just Freesat - Sky customers would notice it too, however it would only affect *some* channels, not all at once, as you are receiving from a number of different satellites to get a full Freesat service.

I have never found Freesat boxes of any brand to be entirely robust. Sometimes they just lock up for no reason, or reboot themselves while you’re trying to watch TV. However I’ve never known one to spontaneously factory-reset so it requires a postcode on restart. That may indicate that your box is on the way out.

My box is a non recording Manhattan and was £50 a few years ago, so that's good value.

It did have limited On Demand though (ITV Hub and IPlayer only), but the iPlayer was withdrawn. Not sure if the ITV Hub still works of not.

I believe that with some boxes you can now add non Freesat channels to the EPG and record them, which is what i'd buy if I needed a new box.

In answer to your questions, the Humax HDR1100 has WiFi, so it could connect to the internet that way. If it has no internet access it obviously can't provide you with VOD, but it will still receive and record programmes :)

You can see what other features it has before deciding in its manual here:

https://www.freesat.co.uk/help/manuals/

Vintage TV have asked that anyone unhappy with channels leaving because of the new charging policy to complain using this link:

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/complain-to-ofcom

Will there be any music channels left after Vintage leaves? Also, even if the new charging policy is amended, how many will come back? When people stop using a service, they sometimes find that they can manage perfectly well without it...

Happy to help.

Nollywood TV has closed down on Sky 327. On 22/2/18 It was replaced on Virgin Media with AIT, now we know why.

At the moment they are showing vintage English/American films; I assume that this is to keep the EPG slot alive and sell it on.

ALL Freesat boxes have STB mode. But Freesat insist that it is no longer documented in the provided manuals. It is also not so easy to jump in & out of STB mode than when the older Manhattan was produced. There are plenty of YouTube videos that will show you how to tune in STB mode on the present Freesat boxes (usually aimed at ROI viewers). One will soon appear for the SX in due course I have no doubt.

RichardCoulter 06-05-2018 14:59

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

Must admit i've never heard of STB mode; i'll take a look at YouTube.

AIUI first generation Humax Foxsat HDR boxes can have custom firmware added that will allow the adding of channels to the channel list (that will appear in the EPG but with very limited programme info) and can be recorded using non Freesat mode and entered manually.

However, once they're added to the EPG you don't need to switch to non freesat mode to record them. Simply set up a manual timer from within the Freesat EPG and it's done.

You can even set it to record once only, daily (inc weekdays only), or weekly if it's a series.

Is this similar to the STB mode that you describe?

Sorry I’m late back to this thread.

We have the Humax 1100S, terabyte model, in white. It’s very easy to set up and use and has YouTube and Netflix apps built in, alongside iPlayer, stv player and Demand 5. All 4 is presently missing because channel 4 are having a carriage dispute with Freesat. I expect it will return eventually.

On the BBC channels you can tune to a programme and, if it’s halfway through, choose to start watching it from the start even if you haven’t been recording it. It does this by automatically accessing the iPlayer. Very useful.

The first box we had, we had to return after a month because it stopped responding to its remote. Amazon refunded it no quibble (they couldn’t automatically replace as it was a “fulfilled by” purchase). We ordered another one and it’s been fine.

It is a far better machine than the Echostar we had previously, which used to lock up at random every couple of weeks for no apparent reason, requiring a hard reboot via the wall socket.

Cheap plusnet broadband, no landline, built in Freeview on the TV and a Freesat PVR with catch up would suit me fine.

Will keep you informed Richard ;)

Hi Richard , hdr1100s up and running , Great picture ,I like how we can get YouTube etc, quite easy to understand if I concentrate , But when it is switched on each time it goes to TV channels and we have to choose say 101 and then click watch now, I would prefer if it just went straight to the picture of the last channel watched. Any more news will let you know,

This is the default view when the box finishes powering up:

I’m not aware if you can change it though I admit I’ve never tried. You don’t need to navigate the TV guide to change channels from this view. If you know the three digit channel number you can just enter it and it will go to that channel in full screen.

Will try the channel numbers after I press ok for Freesat, Do not see any reason for telling you it it Freesat every time you switch on ,

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

That's good to know.

In answer to your question, when switching it on, there isn't a way to make it go to the picture of the last channel it was on.

However, i'm told that pressing 'Exit' will get rid of the overlay and that it will eventually auto time out too.

I discovered the exit button and it is fine, I have looked up the manual on the Internet for the Humax and it is very helpful,

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

'Rocks and Co’ has now been relabelled as ‘Juwelo’ on Freesat.

I think its safe to say the reason they now show Juwelo undubbed all day is perhaps down to Sky intervening when they had a periods of 7-9 days without broadcasting and only showing a promo loop and therefore breaking the EPG rules.

The dubbed English hours are still shown - they are advertised on the website.

What an odd state of affairs!

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

I don't believe that this was ever on Freesat (could be wrong), but anyone who tunes in via non Freesat mode may like to know that, even though it was supposed to be coming off satellite yesterday, Absolute Radio 70's is still broadcasting as normal!

Radio announcements and press articles like this did say that it was leaving DAB (which it has) and satellite on 23/5/18!?

https://radiotoday.co.uk/2018/05/abs...om-dab-and-tv/

Tuning details:

11.538 V DVB-S QPSK SR 22 FEC 5/6

The Paramount Channel is now testing on satellite. So far it's only confirmed to be on Sky and Freeview, but Freesatters will be able to manually tune it in on:

11344 H

27500

FEC 5/6

Currently labelled as 53290

Freesports would be a good candidate for this one, as it would increase their coverage significantly. Depends whether they want to give up their HD mux capacilty or not.

RichardCoulter 07-07-2018 21:01

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

Well, they are due to go HD soon, but they did say that it would be too expensive on Freeview, so who knows?

As time goes by the temporary mux that they are on will be closed, so they will have to do something in the same way that Talking Pictures did. I suspect that because of this the cost of the permanent muxes will increase, so now would be a good time to do it if they can afford it.

RichardCoulter 10-07-2018 22:39

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

Another as yet unamed HD channel is due to join soon. My thoughts are:

CNN International, Al Jazeera, and Bloomberg already broadcast FTA in HD, so must be the most likely options.

Iran International and Record TV also broadcast FTA in HD, so can't be discounted.

Insight appear to be keen to increase their presence as they are in discussions with Virgin Media to carry them. Getting onto Freesat would be much easier, so I certainly wouldn't rule them out.

Maybe Sky are to finally make Sky News HD available?

QUEST HD will shortly start on EPG no 172.

Bloomberg TV HD was the mystery channel, it will shortly start on EPG no 216.

Speculation that GOLD SD may be going FTA after it is said that it will be removed from Now TV in September.

If this comes to fruition, i'd expect it to be carried on Freesat along with all the other UKTV FTA channels.

Re: One or two new channels coming to Freesat.

False alarm i'm afraid, following the removal of the UKTV channels from Virgin Media, UKTV are in negotiations with Sky to add the remaining channels to NOW TV, so GOLD won't be going FTA any time soon (at present, only GOLD is on Now TV).

Quest HD was due to have launched yesterday, but didn't on any platform. No idea what the delay is, but everything is technically in place for it to joint Freesat on channel 167. The Freesat data, EPG info. subtitles etc are all up and running.

On VM, channel 343 says that Vintage TV is currently off air due to a 'technical fault'.

Sadly, I have to concur with what omnidirectional had to say about this in another thread:

When Vintage TV first dropped off air a couple of weeks ago I was prepared to believe it was a technical fault, as they claimed. But with the removal from Freesat, Freeview, and now going off air on Sky/Virgin it looks like the channel is in trouble.

Initial enquires to Sky and Vintage TV were met with people being told that they knew nothing about the channel being unavailable. Now Vintage TV are saying that, in order to make the channel as widely available as possible, the channel has been temporarily removed from Sky & VM.
