*ignites a minor amount of bluetouch paper*

Personally, I do not understand the whole "de-valueation" of the XL package. It has been established on here in the past that we basically pay of the HD channels as part of our subscription. Also, there are still many channels, and many on-damand programmes I would miss if I dropped down packages. For me, XL still offers very good value.

I understand people may be upset about channels being available on other packages, but if VM and the studio can make more revenue through advertising to more punters, where is the problem? The additional revenue will only benefit XL customers in the long term.

I know many people who would like to watch the next series of the walking dead when it premieres, but can not due to a lack of finances. Why should they have to wait? It is only studio greed that has stopped watching it in the past.

If the studio and VM can afford to let them have it on a lower tariff, then let them have it.

Lets face it, the extra revenue could pay for netflix or in an unlikely state of affairs, Sky Atlantic.

The option to downgrade is never more than 12 months away though!!!!

All i can say is LG want to change the the current packages and have huge plans to overhauil everything and really challenge Sky in terms of value.

I didn't know that Netflix showed new series too! I thought it was just films and some archive series.

On a programme review show that I have just seen, it says that Netflix is showing a new series called 'Breaking Bad'.

Breaking Bad isn't New, it's the 6th season it used to be on Fox but Netflix grabbed the rights (silly Fox)

Netflix also produced and are the first broadcasters for;

- Arrested Development (Season 4)
- House of Cards (Season 1 and soon to be made Season 2)
- Orange is the New Black (season 1)

And a few other shows but those are just off the top of my head

But how if true their going to include a ps4 on vip on rental basis does that include free repairs etc

Or they doing a similar thing that microsoft is doing where you pay higher for online live where u payback so much each month until paid off like a zero interest rate

Where this rumour come from? Sounds like it would scrape the barrell clean! Maybe as a special offer. I know smallworld looked into it and their cheapest price for it would be £45 a month just for 10mb broadband and the console on rent

TAZMANUK 05-10-2013 12:52

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

Look at theone comment it was on that maybe included in vip.

The upside would be is that u can connect a cable or sat box to xbox one via a hdmi thru cable provided.

Is sony did the same so tivo could be connected same way so you could quickly switch from ps4 to tivo or even split screen then a double whammy would be tivo could display what films games apps you could buy from psn via tivo system and link psn with tivo and vice versa.

So if you wanted to buy a ps4 game you could via tivo ps4 app if ever made or via on demand menu and on psn search for virgin stuff via psn.

Ps vita could get tv anywhere app when it ever arrives

PS4 won't show Tivo through it as the hardware has no HDMI in.

I highly doubt it, maybe they will make it a separate package like a phone contract. You pay X a month and we give your broadband and a PS4, you keep it at the end of the 24 months.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

There was some press - last year I think - about a company (can't remember the name) wanting to launch gaming through web-connected smart TVs (which would include TiVo). The idea was that there would be no need of a console at the users end as all the games would be stored on the company's servers and sent over the internet to the customer's TV. I wondered at the time if VM would pick this up.

Edit - here is the game company Onlive http://games.onlive.com/game-system. I remember there was some talk about a TV app to do the work of their dongle or mini-console.

How would the PS4 account work. Would you use your exisiting account? If you had to create a new account and bought loads of games on the rental machine would they remain yours if you gave the machine back?

Games are registered to your account not the console, anyway is there any truth in this rumour?

Personally i would rather buy my own console rather than rent 1.

I'd imagine your PS4 account would be linked to your PSN+ account so you would have to top up your PSN+ account to get the games but those games will be yours to keep then regardless of if you have to return the PS4 to vm for whatever reason or not.
If Sony keep psn+ similar to how it is now you will be able to play psn content on two machines , if you say give the ps4 back to VM you will simply deactivate that console via your Sony entertainment account , this then frees up the account to be used on a new machine.
These are only rumourted talks at the moment but Sony themselves announced at Gamescom they have a deal with Virgin Media and a couple of other networks regarding the PS4.
As soon as i know more and i'm given the all clear to say something i will post on here.

The deal was related to network facilities to make online gaming smoother similar to how Netflix partnered with networks when launching SuperHD

It's nothing to do with selling consoles.

Sounds like they are doing what Sky did to gain subscribers- picking up the rights for successful series, so that those following it have to change to the new rights holders service to continue to be able to do so.

Any rental contracts that I've entered into, for commercial or personal use, has included free repairs, so I would imagine that free repairs would be included in such a scheme.

Some people find it beneficial to rent in the fast changing world of technology (in the same way that many people rented their colour TV's at first)

Some of the benefits to renting are free repairs, no initial financial outlay and the ability to upgrade easily to new models.

Not really, Breaking Bad failed to take off when shown on Channel Five or Fox http://www.tvwise.co.uk/2012/03/brea...k-broadcaster/

People are attracted by short term offers and lots of content. Lowering the price merely makes you look like the budget option, and that's not always an attractive proposition.

I've asked several times in posts as to why people, who really want Netflix, are waiting for it to be added to Tivo when it is relatively cheap and easy to get it via other devices. And this is true. But although for me and others, adding a separate device is a breeze, for some it is not.

But there are other groups of people to whom Netflix is not essential, but they would like to have it if it was easily accessible. But of those people, not everyone has a smart TV, and won't go out and buy a new TV just to get the 'smart' features. I have two 40" Sony 'non-smart' TVs which give an excellent picture, so there is no way I would waste money buying a new TV just for the smart bit. There are millions of people like me who buy a new TV when they need one, not just when a new feature gets added, And then there is internet connectivity; not everyone knows how to hook up their smart TV to a router. With Tivo, you don't need a separate internet connection.

So for loads of people, adding Netflix to Tivo will be a good, worthwhile thing, not a worthless one

And there is one other advantage; Netflix titles will be include in Tivo show searches, with presumably a direct link to play the show via Netflix.

Hi guys please excuse this one-off off topic question.

On Friday evening I saw an advert on Channel 4 with regard to catching up on previous series of "HOMELAND". Great I thought as I missed the last 3 episodes of Season 2. On looking through the menus on my TiVo box I cannot find it... Catch up on 4OD the ad stated.

Please if anyone knows how to find it I would be grateful. Season 3 starts 9pm tonight.
thanks:)

Me personally i run a 10metre HDMI cable from my pc to my tv and i use my pc to watch Netflix , sometimes i use my PS3 too if that's already switched on.
As you also mentioned with Netflix titles being included in the Tivo listings search will be a huge advantage.

Did a search on all On Demand content and cannot find it myself, so looks like it's only online. You can find it at http://www.channel4.com/programmes/homeland/4od.

Currently not showing on Sky either , I've checked the 4oD app on my PS3 and Season 2 Episodes 8-12 are available , they are also available on my YouView box so it would appear its only available via 4oD using the connected app or via a computer.

So what did you want us to do? Just say yes and agree that you are probably be right, or create discussion on this discussion forum regarding the information we have seen.

The point is that this is a discussion forum, and you choose to only share information in DM's is pointless. Im part of one of the DM groups but the information shared is then relayed onto this public forum as soon as possible.

If you have something to share, then share it publicly and allow people to discuss it rather than shooting down everyone and then only sharing it with your buds in DM.

I use a WDTV Live Streaming Media Player. This gives 5.1 and 1080p Super HD. It also has the advantage of being able to set the frame rate to 24fps, so I output at 1080p/24. This is good because most US Netflix content is 24fps, even the TV shows.

I also use my HTPC at times, but Windows 7 limits streaming to 720p and stereo sound. The Win 8 Netflix app can do 1080p, but not sure what the sound capabilities are on the Win 8 app.

But that wouldn't be an option.

The channel + On Demand is a viable option

The channel without On Demand is a viable option

But there is no way Sky would give Sky Atlantic On Demand on it's own, without the channel.

To be fair, anything you relay is likely to be questioned and ripped apart, even if it's totally correct. That's healthy on a discussion forum and probably should happen more often, considering some of the rubbish often stated by certain people on this type of thread. Don't let it bug you, you can always say "I told you it would happen" at some later date. ;)

Contact the mods, DS isn't actively moderated, so being banned for something so trivial is unusual.

I doubt the CF team would ban you to be fair. DSpy has a bit of auto-moderation going on I believe which means you can get banned for the stupidest of things, atleast here people actually look at what's being said!(hence why CF is the best)

I have to agree mate i've felt very welcomed here and as you said people read what you post and they don't hit report just because you disagree with them lol.
All this forum needs is a more active gaming section and for me it'll be the perfect forum.
I'm thinking about starting a smart dns/vpn service/channels thread in the internet section if the mods allow it.

EPG amendments: BBC Two, BBC Three, BBC Four, BBC One HD, BBC Two HD and Nick Jnr +1 renamed.

I wonder if this is connected to the rollout of the regions in HD and/or the extra BBC HD channels that are on their way?

I can also reveal that the BBC are testing out the implementation of an HD swap on satellite and that they are keen to implement this on VM too. About three months ago it was announced that freeview are looking into this too.

Nothing, i'm summising that this will be a Sky exclusive, at least for a further amount of time.

IIRC, Sky signed a carriage deal in November last year. This contract included an extension of carriage terms, an expansion of Star TV channels in HD (I am assuming that Sky are helping with the costs and will have insisted on an exclusivity clause) and permission for Sky to stream Star channels on Sky Go.

I have also not been able to verify that Baby TV will cease to be a standalone channel and become part of XL.

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2013) Vol. 5.

Swap the epg numbers of the hd channel with the sd channel. so if you had an hd capable box ie tivo when you selected bbc1 on 101 you would get bbc1 hd.

BBC1 isn't a good example, I'd get stuck watching ice skating penguins going round in circles instead of the local news bulletins if that happened

Sorry what's happened?

Have they moved?

Also the HD Swap technology in Sky is run by the Sky boxes, I assume on Sky it just means setting the switch to right place.

All that's needed on the TV handset is a shortcut key. Buttons like the * are not used at present. If only this could be utilised to switch between SD & HD varients it would make life easier.

CW are the network in USA that show shows such as Vampire diaries , Supernatural , nikita.
ABC have shows such as revenge , once upon a time
usa network show white collar , RAW.

I use their online players and they are pretty decent channels.

Great news but note they are 'UK versions'. All the good shows on those channels already have UK broadcasters, so they won't be able to show those. Still, we may get some of the shows that don't make it to the UK.

Why is this a big thing, the only change I can see is that they have added England to the name, why are people making this out to be that they have all moved (which is kinda needed when BBC Two HD is so far away when 119 and 120 are available...

This would be good, but I can see most of the shows are already taken including Arrow, Modern Family (by both USA and ABC), but it will be good to see these channels, Im having to leave the ease of Virgin Media behind in 2014 as I move over to the states.

A Huge EPG Shake Up is much needed, never understood why Sky1, the flagship Sky channel is behind Sky Living and Sky LivingIt, but the HD versions of non-hd swappable channels need to be moved closer to the bottom

What they'll probably do aswell as show the stuff that uk broadcasters don't pick up they'll probably show re-runs of shows too such as CW may show Vampire Diaries from season 1 etc.

Because the platform with less than 5 million subscribers may be able to offer them the start up costs they need to launch in the UK where as the platform with 10 million+ customers might not provide them with such money as they do not see it benefitting their customers.

How would the UK versions of those channels benefit us? How would it benefit Sky?

All of the US content is already signed up to the likes of Sky. There's no reason why Sky would waste money for UK versions of those channels when Sky already have the UK rights for shows like Nitika and Supernatural.

If VM got the UK versions of those channels, what exactly do people expect on those channels?

Who is to say that as and when rights come up for these shows they do not just revert to the ABC, USA, CW channels if they did launch in the UK. Each of those networks also have a fair bit of content not broadcast in the UK as well as plenty archive content.

Well very likely say these channels don't launch for another 12 months, a lot of the rights may of expired, making them available for sale. Or not for sale as the case may be, rights tend to be sold on series by series basis with preference to the previous broadcaster. They will clearly think these things through.

Have you tried looking what's on these channels in the USA , take USA Network it shows NCIS (shown on 5 and Fox) , Modern Family (shown on Sky One and Netflix) , NCIS LA (shown on Sky One) , House (shown on Sky Atlantic) , Royal Pains (shown on Universal) , Law and Order (shown on channel 5). Why would a platform need exclusive rights to a channel like that when nearly all that content is already available to it spread across its existing channels ?

This would be good, but I can see most of the shows are already taken including Arrow, Modern Family (by both USA and ABC), but it will be good to see these channels, Im having to leave the ease of Virgin Media behind in 2014 as I move over to the states.

Fingers Crossed on Fox+, this is the 3rd time in 3 weeks!

A Huge EPG Shake Up is much needed, never understood why Sky1, the flagship Sky channel is behind Sky Living and Sky LivingIt, but the HD versions of non-hd swappable channels need to be moved closer to the bottom

Nobody is saying that any channels have moved, just pointing out that some have been renamed.

VM used to own Sky Living, so that's why it comes before Sky 1.

This is good news, Media Boy! I'd love to see more English speaking channels from other countries such as Canada and Australia. I am sure ther3 are other channels that can supplement these US channels as well! Can't believe these new US channels will be VM exclusives. Just like the old days! Remember the NBC Superchannel?!!

Why would a platform need exclusive rights to a channel like that when nearly all that content is already available to it spread across its existing channels ?

Exactly. Plus Vampire Diaries is on ITV 2, Supernatural & Nitika are on Sky Living, Arrow is on Sky One. All of those shows broadcast stateside on CW.

The only way a UK version of The CW etc would work is if the vast majority of UK content rights expires on several channels and the current right holders don't renew their rights (or get outbid by LG for several content rights). Unlikely to say the least.

Wasn't House shown elsewhere before Sky Atlantic?
Wasn't quite a lot of the existing shows available elsewhere before Sky Atlantic?
Now ask yourself why a platform would want exclusive rights to that content when it's already available on it's existing channels.

Similar to my thoughts Ocav. I guess VM can stop broadcasting quite a few channels too. There are lots of programmes shown on Universal, Fox, Comedy Central (a few examples) that are shown (and have been shown) on other channels too.

I find it odd that this is only until 31 December. Maybe that's when the carriage agreement ends and VM have secured a variation in the contract until then to move the channels down to M+??

If this is the case, I'd expect the channels to remain in M+ from 1 January 2014 onwards. I also don't think non essential VM staff would appreciate being asked to go into work first thing New Years Day to change the encryption level! (unless this can be programmed in advance). When does the non essential freeze on changes end this/next year?

I could be wrong and it may be that it is the decision of VM as to which pack a basic channel goes into. I say this because I know that Sky were extremely annoyed that VM initially put Sky 1 into the free M TV pack. This only changed when Sky and VM agreed carriage terms for Sky 3/Pick TV and this channel replaced Sky 1 to align it with the freeview service that M TV broadly reflects.
