I think an option to just change the channel without recording could have been offered alongside recording.

And the point is that, as has already been pointed out, this option was simple not doable; though why I don't know.

I spent today at home, and enjoyed the new feature of being able to set various reminders to give me some background company..
Now that's just weird  For 'background' I'd leave it on one channel or just listen to the radio.

but then I've just had to waste my precious time deleting all the unwanted recordings - mainly because as the Tivo is approx 85% full and default setting on 'normal' recordings is notkeep until I delete the Tivo will delete my older wanted recordings off it's own back before my unwanted reminder recordings. So Tivo is not saving me the one thing I never have enough of - time. How can this situation be a step forward Carl?
Because your way of using Tivo is, honestly, not one that I have ever heard of before and cannot be thought of as "normal use". Which makes it your problem, not Tivos.

I help where I can but I'm also pretty sure I am allowed an opinion when I'm not actively helping :)

Reminders are here (implemented in the only way possible, apparently) and yet those who wanted the functionality are still complaining.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the default Tivo setting on a recording is keep until space is required. When the box is full, I believe that the oldest recordings are deleted first. If I leave recorded reminders on a nearly full Tivo then when space is needed for 'planned' recordings what will Tivo delete to make space - the new watched reminders or older recordings?

If the above are the default settings then I would say that was probably the most common way of using Tivo and should be considered normal use. I agree it does make it my problem, not a problem of my making, but a problem of a poor implementation of what should have been a first rate feature.

Grim, how dare you use tivo in a way that has not been aproved and certified by Carl Waring? Shocking, simply shocking!

How many other DVRs delete recordings when they are short or run out of space like Tivo have implemented as default?! The common "Default" is to stop recording, Tivo just had to do what is common practice, somehow they haven't, much to the annoyance of plenty of users who want to control their recordings, not let a box do it for them.

Mrs G says that if any of her Bruce Willis films are deleted because of reminders then our Tivo might meet with a nasty accident. She's currently working her wat through everything changing the settings to do not delete and complaining that this is what she wanted to spend Friday evening doing. I'm too scared to pass any coment :Yikes:

As far I know it's how TiVo has worked for 10 years

Our old Pioneer DVD/HDD recorder also has the option to reduce recording quality - a very useful feature that meant when we spent 28 days visiting friends in NYC we knew that all our planned recordings would be there when we returned along with all the recordings that were there when we left :D

But you can set induvidual recordings and series links, to KUID, so it is a Tivo option, so it makes no sense not to include it in the recording default options.

I see there is some text to the right of each option, So a note of some kind, such as, 'Tivo recomends KUSN, be sure to monitor free space if you choose KUID' would help novice users.

Exactly. VM users are used to having to keep and eye on free disc space and delete when necessary, because that's what you had to do on V+.

The older recordings.

However, I thought the idea of reminders was so that you could watch something there and then. So it won't take up any space on your Tivo as you will either cancel the recording when the reminders pops-up or delete the recording when you have watched it. Right? :)

See about. This shouldn't happen :) But yes, setting some things (not everything) to KUID is a good idea.

PS I've had a bit of a crappy day so if that's affected my posting style I apologise. (Can't say it has for certain but the way my brain works - ore doesn't - you never know :))

I think pb's point was that people aren't changing the way they do things now that they have a more intelligent system available to them. ie They are trying to make their Tivo into a V+.

To write off everything in an older piece of equipment, is not wise. As has been pointed out, tivo is the only common PVR that has auto delete. Doesn't that tell you something?

Anyone would think we are asking for KUID to be made the default and unchangeable. We're not; we just want it to be an option in recording defaults; an option that is freely available to set for individual recordings.

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

Look Carl the problem with you is that you won't let anyone else say anything a bad thing about TiVo. And because of that I don't ever trust your opinion because it just isn't balanced.

PassingBat I would imagine on the whole likes the TiVo box which is why he has one but he's totally entitled to his opinion and how he wants to operate the box. I don't like the way you are trying to make people who are simply asking for free choice into some sort of group that are stuck in the past. And that is what you are trying to do. But why undermine him or me for that matter as I agree with him. Maybe there is some insecurity you feel about TiVo?

I want to decide when things get deleted because when I don't, things get deleted that I don't want to be deleted. What's the problem with that?

If TiVo is such the great time saver that you claim, tell me how long it will take you to put a reminder for each programme on a series link, something that has just become available. It will take a ridiculous amount of time.

And that's the point Carl. For as good as TiVo is there are things about it that are bloody infuriating, and no preset KUID is one of those things to me and a few other people on here.

andy_m 18-08-2012 01:56

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

We're going round in circles here, and I nearly didn't get involved, but I can't let Carl take all the bashing for this alone because he very definitely isn't alone on his views on this issue. Set TiVo to record a show and it will change the channel and record the show. Set a TiVo reminder and it will change the channel and record the show. If this really is the only way that this feature could be implemented as Ben has said then it is utterly utterly pointless and Virgin should have said so rather than pander to people who quite clearly would have been happy with just a bigger hard drive in their v+.

neilo 18-08-2012 02:18

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

I agree we're going around in circles on some issues.

I do find the reminders quite useful now they're there and I have been using them. I just wish they could be set in bulk on things already in the planner! It's all this going in individually on recordings that gets my goat. I want things to be as few clicks as possible. Maybe I'm too demanding?

I often get the feeling with VM that things are brought in to help
people but just not thought about as fully as they could be.

I find it astonishing the Tivo apparently cant do what the V+ could so simply do, whatever the technical reasons

Where is your evidence for these so called 'problems'? I remember a post by Spiderplant where he mentioned one user who had had problems because he was recording daily shows and not using his common sense. Are there others that I've forgoten or missed?

I have already suggested that VM/Tivo could leave the initial default setting at KUSN and put a qualifying note if choosing the KUID setting. Personally, I don't think a qualifying note is necessary, but VM/Tivo appear to think that their user base is not intelligent enough to work these things out for themselves, so the note is to appease VM/Tivo. Judging by your post, you seem to have the same view as VM/Tivo on customer intelligence. What a surprise.

Of course, some people simply have different opinions; which is neither bias nor spamming

I really wish some people would read what I actually write and not what I don't; or what they think I mean.

For the record, I have never written anything about reminders other than my opinion (note not bias or spamming!) - and one shared by others - that, with three tuners available - reminders are somewhat redundant.

I have also never actually stated an opinion either way on the current implementation of reminders. So why some people seem to think I have (and now "ignore" me for it) I really don't know

For the record, you should indeed be able to set reminders by default (however pointless and against the spirit of Tivo that is) and you should be able to set existing SLs to remind as well. But I'm sure they'll fix both of these over-sights at some point.

GrimUpNorth 18-08-2012 11:03

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

It would be good if all recorded reminders were lumped in a folder called 'Recorded Reminders' or something similar, then cleaning up after a mamoth reminder fest could (if you've watched them all) be a one button press feature in My Shows. That would be a compromise I'd be more than happy with.

Cheers

But I thought the idea of the reminder was that you sit down there-and-then to watch the show, then delete it!

In a perfect world, yes. I occasionally forget to delete standard series link shows that I've just watched but don't want to keep.

And Tivo knows wheather I want to keep that particular show or delete it, how?

And don't say by using a mixture of KUID and KUSN, because when my disc gets near full, it's often a difficult decision as to which show I'm going to have to delete to create space.

It's a simple good suggestion you should go here

If you get a ground swell of people making the same suggestion something may happen!

The honest answer right now is I don't know. Were you watching JB live? Even if you were then it should have used one of the other two tuners to record ESPN. Unless you only had the one tuner left, in which case it would use that one.

The above makes no sense to me at all.

There are old shows that I will delete when they are viewed, but I don't know when I will get arround to watching them so all my shows are set to KUID.

Why are you so arrogant as to assume that your way is the only correct way to use Tivo?

I'm very happy for you to use Tivo in whatever way that you want to. If your method works for you, then it is perfectly valid.

But only arrogance prevents someone seeing that other people will have a different approach, which is equally valid and works best for them.

You're absolutely right. I started writing it one way then changed my mind and the two got mixed up. Apologies for the confusion

Let's try that again....

Because, if you didn't want it deleted when the space was required, you'd set to KUID. But if you do that with too much stuff then it can cause problems for future recordings.

You have stated that previously, and this morning I asked you to give me examples of people who had posted about these problems, besides the one example that Spiderplant had posted about. Note, I am talking about real life examples, not theory. Because for this to be a theoretical problem, you have to assume that people aren't capable of monitoring their hard disc free space, and I know that they are.

I've waited all day for your examples, and you have still not posted them, but have posted this unproved assertion twice.

I have no real-world examples either as mine has never deleted anything itself since I got it. So perhaps leaving it to Tivo isn't as bad an you think it might be.

I check free space each time I delete a show, which is at least once a day. And I'm aware when I'm going to be recording a lot of hours of HD and take account of that, such as recently when the olympics were on and I was recording several 3 to 4 hour shows. It's just common sense, not rocket science.

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

I am an early adopter of TiVo and since the first time I got it virtually all my recordings are set to "Keep Until I Delete". My English isn't that great but my understanding was that if there wasn't enough disk space TiVo wouldn't record anything (fare enough).

House keeping (coming from a V+ with a very limited hard drive) is just something I've grown used to doing, I went away for a couple of weeks feeling secure in the knowledge that everything recorded with KUID was safe. Imagine my shock when I returned to find that my box had reached 94% full (that's not the shock) but beside the KUID recordings was the hour glass symbol and the statement that "this episode will be deleted within 24 hours".

I then spent ages in My Shows going into the hour glass flagged recordings scrolling down to more options then redoing all the keep until I delete settings again, it took ages (I later saw a post from Carl where if you've created enough disk space all you need to do is reboot the box and all the hour glass symbols will disappear, would have saved me so much time).

This event has scared me is there no reason to use KUID? Since then I've never let the box reach over 85% again, deleting a lot of stuff that if I hadn't been so traumatised I would have kept I feel there's no real difference between KUID and KUSN apart from the time needed for TiVo to put on the frighteners.

I got involved in forum threads where the discussion was about keep until space needed recordings were being flagged with the above mentioned hour glass / deletion statement when there's plenty of disk space available. My input was "get a grip" it's hardly a fault more of a typo because items flagged for deletion were never deleted if you had disk space, how hard is it to make the recordings KUID if you don't like the symbol showing up. What I said then now seems to be way off the mark because logic apparently plays no part in TiVo thinking.

I have to be honest I don't think it's deleted anything that I've set to KUID but the earliest recording on my box is July 2011 and I would have thought there would have been something in the first 5 months I would have wanted to save but my memory's not the best (I wanted reminders). I certainly don't trust it as others may do and the US use of the English language is definitely different to mine.

Unfortunately I think that 15 years of developement without the firmware being completely rewritten and overhauled lends itself to machines having varying idiosyncrasies, as long as it's not terminal TiVo will still survive.

Nevertheless it's a great bit of kit that anyone would find it hard to take off me, the foibles I'm getting used to.

Both my boxes went up to 100% full last year because I ended up in hospital at extreemly short notice and was in there for around 12 weeks. On getting home, there were no hour glass symbols and all my recorded shows were intact. It had obviously stopped recording after a while due to a full discs. But important recordings that I'd made before hand were still there because I always use KUID.

dwarfofpoison 19-08-2012 01:12

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

At this very moment my box is 77% full I have a series link for Criminal Minds

Channel: 110 Sky Liv HD
Record: New only
Keep at most: All episodes
Keep until: Until I delete
Start recording: 1 minute early
Stop recording: 4 minutes longer

19 episodes have been recorded, there are no planned upcomming new episodes. The last six of these from 17/02 - 39/03 at this very moment are showing the hour glass symbol with This episode will be deleted within 24 hours.

I can't explain why it's marking them for deletion but the statement says "This episode will be deleted in 24 hours". If a big guy says they are going to punch me within 24 hours, I'll run to the hills. The statement is unambiguous!

So Keep until I delete doesn't fill me with the greatest amount of confidence! Maybe my box is faulty but the thought of loosing 18 months of Thumbing, series links and wishlists is a trauma I'll bare only if it does what it says it's going to do and start deleting things.

(these aren't the only programs marked for deletion!)

As previously explained, it is also incorrect. It should read "...may be deleted...".

Do you have the 15.3 software yet, dwarfofpoison? There have been bugs in the past related to it threatening to delete in error, so I won't worry about it if you are still on 15.2.

I've never known it actually delete when it shouldn't.

Yes spiderplant I'm on 15.3 but as I said it hasn't deleted anything that I consciously wanted to keep however I wouldn't swear on my life that any KUID recordings have gone. My understanding of TiVo is that if it deletes recordings they are permanently deleted and thus bypass the recently deleted folder (I'm sure I read that somewhere!) so with 1TB of recording memory there's little chance I can remember all that I've saved.

Am I the only one that gets the hour glass symbol on KUID recordings? (suggests a problem with my box) As I said earlier I know about the message that often gets applied to KUSN recordings but as Carl says it's been widely discussed and simply changing the word will to may would resolve that, they don't worry me at all

It's just worrying when the same warning gets applied to recordings made with KUID.

Carl are you saying if the box is exchanged they can transfer all your series links, wishlists and thumbs? Food for thought, the day they can transfer recordings I'm definitely up for changing. Having so much space is a double edged sword I had problems with 5 V+ boxes, changing them meant a day or two of watching recordings but it'll take weeks to get through everything on my TiVo.

Whishlists, series links etc. will all be lost, along with recordings if you get a new box.

A way to back up series links and whishlists plus other settings is a very popular request to be included in a future update. I imagine VM enabling backups of your recordings is a whole different ball game and quite a long way off

You can back up your recordings yourself to a DVD or HDD recorder.

It would only actually delete any of your requested recordings if it had already emptied Recently Deleted and Suggestions, but still needed more space. I doubt it would really delete KUID recordings anyway.

It certainly happened for other people on the 15.1 software. It was meant to be fixed in 15.2, but it seems there are still cases where it can happen. I'm sure it's a software bug rather than something specific to your box, so a swap wouldn't help. (Well, it would temporarily, but only because you'd have an empty hard drive).

I'll do some more testing of this.

My point was that you wouldn't lose the thumbs settings, etc., only the recordings.

As pb said already, if your box is exchanged then you lose the lot. The ability to back-up settings would be brilliant.

Dwarfofpoison - I know you've probably thought of this and this isn't it, but I nearly lost a few episodes of Star Trek Voyager (I know, I know but it's Seven of Nine you see) which I thought they were all KUID, but some of them were KUSN because I only amended the series link to KUID after about ten programmes had recorded. I had to go back in individually on each recording and change them.

No channel on VM has shown any of these eps in the last year; that I am aware of. (Though I admit I don't have every channel in my Digiguide but I though I had most of them on which this show airs. (ie PickTV and CBS Action.)

Some people might consider being gracious and thanking someone who gives them some good advice.

Re: TiVo Update Coming! 13-24th August - Just got a message on my box

Don't hold your breath, some people will ignore good advice and then when it gets pointed out by someone who works for VM will come on here and go 'so and so told me this, what great advice' when someone on here has already been giving said advice.

Some people can be so ungrateful, it's not true.

I don't understand why, because Carl actually gives plenty of useful information.

I see Carl takes a bit of stick on here. Freedom of speech goes out the window with some people.

It's a shame as its the first time I've ever done it on any forum.
But I'm just exercising my freedom to not listen. I guess that's why the option is there. The guy has changed his entries after my replies to make himself appear much more helpful than he actually was as well as changing the one that basically told me to kill myself.

Anyhoo back to topic now?

Erm... no, I really haven't. And you can tell because there would be an indication that the post had been edited after any replies were made. (Like at the bottom of this very post; which has been edited a few times. QED :D)

I changed that for a very good reason though; because it was a completely stupid response. But then his comment was a complete stupid thing to say in the first place yet it still there.

Just got up for work and was about to watch the news with my coffee and noticed that all the lights are on my Tivo. I assume my box is updating so I dare not switch it on.

Agreed, I would put on filter list.

Received 15.3 in Nottingham today.

So now pretty much everyone has the update... what's the general feeling?
For me, it's:

I quite like the reminders.
I don't understand why the 'Recording Options' screen has less choices when going into it via some menus rather than others.
It still won't make the tea.

1) Glad for people who wanted Reminders

2) Really annoyed that not all recording defaults are selectable, rendering Express Series Link still useless to me.

For some it will have made a big difference. For me personally, it has no practical advantages whatsoever over the previous version.

For me I now have to press an extra button to set an express series link as I have to scroll past "record and remind" as well as "record".

Got the 15.3 update here in Edinburgh.

What has happened to the search facility on the YouTube app? Has this been given some kind of update too?

I was searching Dawn Of The Dead earlier. As you can see from the first picture, so far so good.

http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/8578/82062563.jpg

However I took a few milliseconds more than usual to type in the next letter and for some reason all of the letters around the letter I've got highlighted change.

http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/3319/73245166.jpg

This happened just as I was pushing right on my remote to type in the letter E in the word dead however E has changed to I resulting in me making a typo.

What is going on here? Is this now happening as a result of the 15.3 upgrade. What is the benefit supposed to be? I'm now getting lots of typo's in my YouTube searches as a result. It's so bloody annoying.

This was in 15.2 as well - it's a kind of predictive text. It's suggesting what the next letter in your word will be so that you don't have to move the cursor too much.
