Virgin Media did say something about the Star Trek app launching on April 11th sometime over the Easter Weekend on Virgin Channel 100 but when I look on Channel 100 last night it has been remove.

Star Trek TOS (7 day catch up) and TAS are available under TV for XL > CBS Action.

The app was mentioned briefly in the little TV window when you look in TV on demand. Was presented by a nerdish looking guy.

Hi,

Reminders will be part of the next release, which is scheduled for

before the end of the year and as soon as we have a firm date it

will be posted on the forum.

Thanks
Also just thinking about it when were the 2 major updates last year? As it may give us a clue to when the new one may come:confused:

This is gonna a bit of a long post I am afraid, but here goes (takes deep breath)

devilincarnate, I remember a smaller update happening earlier in the year, but I don't remember when it was or what it updated. I am looking forward to having reminders coming back, but does anyone know if we will be receiving anything else?
I read somewhere that we may not get any new channels until September (disappointing, but its some thing I can live..I only want HD variations and don't really care about Sky Atlantic) does anyone know when sky will be putting their prices up, because I can only think Virgin are gonna pull out all the stops when that happens to entice as many customers over to the light side! We now have BBC and SKY sports red button and with reminders coming to TIVO soon, there will be few gripes for people to moan about and all the functionality of the SKY HD box.
On another note does anyone else think SKY launched there movie rental deal because they got wind of a deal being close to completion (or even completed) between Virgin and lovefilm or netflix? I don't know how these things work, but I know in food retail, tongues always wag and there are few secrets from our competitors and vice versa.
Finally kudos to Virgin for giving us more apps over the past couple of weeks, they may not be the best out there, but at least it shows something is happening!

Sky Store is a PPV service , Netflix is a subscription based service.

Yes we had a small update as a bug fix which also broke some 3rd party remote control apps for TIVO

I'm also looking forward to reminders coming back. I only had two gripes with TIVO - BBC Red button and Reminders, they have resolved 50% of my gripes

background recording

We need to see background recording returning because that is a great feature rather than one by one. I'm a TiVo fan but I feel that is a advantage of v plus. In America they use TiVo to go to record to your pc but uk nothing. This needs sorted

Sky Now, when it launches, is rumoured to have subscription options, and that is the serrvice from sky that is aimed as competition for netflix/Lovefilm as well as aiming to attract viewers to Sky who don't want a dish and or don't want to be tied into long term contracts. It is actually a very smart move by Sky.

There was a major update just before the general Tivo release, in around March/April 2011, which among other things, activated the 3rd tuner.

Background recording? Not sure what you are referring to mate. I can't think of any recording modes or features that V+ has which Tivo doesn't.

carlwaring 13-04-2012 21:03

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

I believe he is referring to the very useful feature of the V+ when you could record one or more programmes to a DVDR whilst using the V+ to watch something else. This was only possible because the V+ had a second, dedicated, SCART output on it.

It was because the V+ has a dedicated decoder for doing that. Tivo doesn't have that decoder, so background copying is not possible on current Tivo boxes

Anyone else noticed that ESPN, Tivo or VM keep on changing the goalposts with series record for UFC. First it was just plain old live UFC then it was called Boxing live, now it's called something else like Martial Arts. Next it will be 'tough blokes who can look after themselves'. Please keep in consistant VM. I've probably missed some good fights because of this.

I don't think you'll find that this is Virgin Media's fault; they are not responsible for the titles and are not responsible for content. The fault here lies with ESPN, but it may be that you can create a wishlist for boxing if this is your thing.

I've noticed this for ITV catch-up. It took until Saturday for some of Monday's programmes to appear there. That's just 48 hours before they were due to disappear from the list. I haven't check in with on-demand, though, so can't comment.

MTVN HD which VM carry will be rebranded to MTV Live HD , MTV HD is a simulcast of MTV UK and currently isn't carried by VM.

At the moment they are alienating 3,500,000 of their paying TV customers simply because they don’t have the most up to date PVR.

Virgin must launch the streams as linear channels for VHD and V+ customers. As a TiVo customer myself, with V+ in my bedroom, I want to be able to access all of the Olympics regardless of what box at home I’m watching on. I pay my TV license and a high end subscription and expect full coverage, and the ability to record the events on both of my boxes.

Virgin are aligning themselves to the Olympics very neatly with their logo being changed to incorporate the British flag, using Usain Bolt in their ad campaigns and their deal with the London underground to bring free Wi-Fi to passengers during the Olympic period. It would be such a shame for them not to deliver the biggest show on the planet, live from our shores, to all 4,000,000 of their TV customers. In fact it would be a scandal if they didn’t.

I expect a press release from Virgin soon about this.

An interesting read echoing what you say , the Olympics can be a big selling point for pay TV also

This bit is interesting:
Quote:

making Sky’s satellite platform the best port of call for anyone wanting in-depth or specialized coverage plus additional timeshift recording options.
I can only think of three reasons why VM wouldn't offer linear channels, the lack of which, prevents time shift recording:

1) They don't have the capacity or there are other technical reasons.

2) They don't want to spend the money involved

3) They want to use it as a way of driving users to Tivo

All are worrying in my view; 1 and 3 in particular.

VM should do the right thing and provide linear channels.

Do we really want VM to spend a large amount of money in order to buy the equipment to provide us with 24 channels for a few weeks use?

Virgin have, in the past, stated their intention to significantly increase the number of high definition channels on their platform. If that is the case then providing the linear, recordable, channels for the Olympics would just be making an investment that they would need to make anyway for a high definition future.

If, as Enders suggest, Sky may do well with their Olympic offerings wouldn't Virgin be making a mistake if they don't gear up for the Olympics?

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

IMO I do not think VM has the resources to match what Sky are able to offer their customers, but time will tell. I do hope VM are able to announce something for their non TiVo customers which are the 85% majority.

I don't think your average Virgin TV customer would really care what Virgin have to outlay to provide the 24 channels for a few weeks. I know I've never thought "Oh what has that just cost Virgin" when new TV channels have launched.

With Virgin increasing the price of all of their TV packages, most customers are waiting to see what Virgin are going to deliver over the next few months to justify the price hikes. Some of the extra revenue from price hikes could be used to carry the Olympic channels for a few weeks.

If enough TV customers want the 24 chanels, Virgin should deliver.

Mrs Grim uses the tried and tested method. The Tivo let her down once and you don't get a second chance in the house of grim, so she buys a TV listing magazine and then sets a manual recording for each prog she wants to watch. Labourious? Maybe, but she never complains she's missed anything and as she says reading the TV magazne helps with her reading skills! Which is quite funny as she's got a degree in english literature and we've enough books in the house to make many a mobile library jealous!

Cheers

Grim

Ours comes with both the Saturday & Sunday papers. Works well for us with reminders set  Do not use the TIVo at all for this sort of planning. That reminds me, really need to dust it!!

Dont "buy" them, "free" with weekend papers but I take your point. Think scanning Box would take nearly as long as looking at guide. However each to his or her own. However I have to side with Mrs Grim

I don't study the EPG in depth. I know what I like, and use other sources to find other things to watch.

I have enough to watch without ploughing through a listings mags. At least this way I don't know what I'm missing :D

Re: Coming Soon to Virgin TV (2012) Vol. 2.

I personally like the search feature on TIVO , assuming I've just seen an advert for a new show starting soon you can just tap the show name in and hey presto the info is there allowing you to set a series link certainly beats trawling through days listings on the EPG that said I also like Sky's green button feature on adverts allowing you to set a reminder for a future show or series link it , I'm afraid on this one I'm with Carl as I never use a TV mag but each to their own.

That's all very well but, unfortunately, the TiVo EPG is sometimes (often?) out of date. Other times it's just wrong. There was a recent showing of Silent Witness on BBC 1 which had been changed. This information was correct and up-to-date on my bedroom V+ but still showed the out-of-date info on my living room TiVo. Similarly, I can remember not setting a series link for the Wallander series on BBC 4 as the EPG had it down as the UK version (which I had already seen). Only later did I discover that it was the Swedish version (which I would have enjoyed had I known it was showing). These are not the only instances. Of course, the TV listings magazines are even more likely to show out-of-date listings. Top of my upgrade wish-list would be for the TiVo EPG to be at least as up-to-date as the V+ one.

This channel was removed from Satellite and cable in 2010 wasn't it , are we struggling for news on here at the moment :D

It was removed by VM in around 2010 but by then the channel had already been mothballed.

In its prime it was a superb channel and had the quality which any broadcaster would be proud of. I used to watch the news broadcast most nights. However, apparently it never made any money so it's not a total surprise that it has shut down as it had effectively been closed in 2010. However, for some reason, it didn't get carriage on FV until AFTER digital switchover and I would imagine that this would have impacted on their audience and was one of the nails in their coffin.

It is, sometimes for some channels. But the channels and programmes I watch seem to be fine. Can't remember the last time it didn't record what it was supposed to.

Before anyone spins that the wrong way, I am not excusing any error just saying that they don't affect me much.

I have a look at the review of the week - that takes 5 minutes tops . What to watch day by day again 5 minutes & programmes start around 8pm + 2 minutes or so.

As I very rarely watch "live" TV the adverts/ plugs are a blur. As I said before I never have been he/she is in this I will watch it type of guy. The same with music I like a song/ tune not so much the artist. Books are a different story If you will pardon the pun.

great stuff, better order more 3D glasses, will there be seperate channels from BBC and Eurosport for the 3D coverage?

Eurosport's Olympic coverage will be in High Definition 24/7, and viewers with 3D capable TV's and the correct subscription package will have access for the first time to over 100 hours of 3D programming.

not sure what the correct subscripton package means, have always been on the top package with Telewest/Virgin so have always had Eurosport

Think it's just a standard phrase. I'm pretty sure everyone on VM with an HD box will have access to Eurosport 3D.

BBC's 3D content will be on BBC HD

Actually, the posts were saying that VM shhould anounce that they were adding the linear channels ASAP, and warning that if they weren't added, they could lose customers to Sky.

I can't remember anyone saying "it'll never happen". And there is a difference between, as you descriibe it, 'doom mongeriing' and warning VM that they would be making a big mistake if they failed to add linear channels.

VM have done the right thing, but why the delay in anouncing it? They either weren't sure that they were going to add them, or maybe they need a shake up in the marketing team?
